  1. You're gonna love the Roku; I've had mine since they were first released, and you get approximately DVD quality from most content and better than DVD (720p) content for the HD stuff. Connection is easy-peasy and just the way you described it.

Does your router also talk the older 802.11g standard, or N only? If you run in Wireless-N only mode, you'll want to spring for the HD-XR. Otherwise, you'll be set with the HD.
  2. How long has the unit been sitting unused? I'm an electronics novice, but I wonder if that sound might be the old caps inside trying to reform as power is applied? You'll want to Deoxit the dickens out of those push button switches; I've seen a HK430 and a HK75+ that got a lot quieter after that procedure.

  3. I'll second twisted on the second set of Forte IIs as surrounds. My
setup used to be 4 Forte IIs with an Academy Center and it sounded
mighty fine. Then I got a line on some Cornwalls, and...well, you can
probably figure out the rest of that story. But I wouldn't hesitate to
    recommend that configuration to anyone.

A step up from that would
be replacing the Academy with another Forte II. Matching timbre is
incredibly important if you're going to be listening to multichannel
music. Yes, I am the devil on your shoulder [6]
  4. I've had one of these for about a month now. They are very cool. I run mine wirelessly to my home theater downstairs, wireless router is one floor up. You can also run them wired. I always get the highest quality (which is based on your net connection), and I can't tell the difference between it and DVD on my standard def TV. Supposedly surround sound and hi-def video are coming later this year, but Netflix will have to start ripping movies that way first.

    A couple caveats:

    • Make sure you're cool with the available movies before you purchase. The available movies tend towards classics, foreign, documentaries, and crap. There's some really decent titles available though.
    • Movies have to be put into your queue via computer. You can then choose movies from your queue on the Roku box.
    • Some technical issues are still being ironed out. For example, I'll get crackly static in the audio every once in a while. Sounds almost exactly like vinyl! They think it may be related to the wireless antenna.
But by and large, it may be the best $99 I've spent for my home theater!
  5. I recently acquired some '79 Cornwalls. Is there any advantage to hooking the mids up to a couple of Altec 811b horns (Eminence drivers, don't know which off the top of my head) that I have lying around? Any sort of crossover modification that needs to happen if I do so? Is there a driver that "works best" in the 811b when used this way?

And should I dampen them with rope caulk? [:|] Just kidding on that one!

  6. Just scored some '79 Cornies! They sound great now, even though I will be replacing the caps in the networks soon. They are listed as CBR, which must mean Raw Birch, finished with some sort of maple and about 30 years of tar and nicotine. My wife, who was already giving me the evil eye over the sheer size of them, is now pinching her nose when she walks in the room

I've never veneered anything before, so let me ask all you knowledgeable woodworkers out there: is this a good first project? Should I strip these things and veneer them, or will stripping the finish make the birch unsuitable for veneer? Any special tools I need besides patience and a steady hand? Thanks for your help!

  7. I'm finally de-lurking to express my thanks to the forum, and Craig and Todd in particular, for helping me along in the direction of my current setup. Based on the informed opinions (and pathological bickering) of many on this list, I was able to start making some educated choices and putting together a new 2-channel system.

I began last year by buying a Rega P2 and making good on a long-time threat to begin collecting Beatles on Parlophone (still working on that, though I'm getting along nicely). Then I was lucky enough to acquire a pair of Forte II, a pair of KG 5.2, and an Academy locally in one fell swoop for $700. And finally a couple of weeks ago, ready to enter the brave old world of tube audio, I contacted Craig (who was not crusty in the least) to see if he had any Scotts for sale in his shop. Unfortunately he didn't, being the busy guy he is, but he was kind enough to point me to this 222c. I got in touch with Todd, who cut me a great deal on it, and I received it last Friday.

I have been in music nirvana for damn near the entire weekend. I'm particularly happy to hear what this thing does to my CDs, although I'm beginning to hear just how terribly some of them were recorded or mastered. Another downside is that I can tell I'm going to be spending more on vinyl in the near future. But I guess that's my burden to carry [:D]

Again, thank you to everyone here for the invaluable information that allowed me to get to this point. I truly couldn't have done it without you.
