  2. A Carver pre sitting on my bedstead for late night headphone listening. It's dead quietness keeps it from being moved for something else and I've reviewed a few pre's but nothing better for this purpose. It's nice that you can plug anything into it too and it has never given me any trouble.

  3. Looks like the only thing Georgian is the exterior.

I've built a couple, none of them like your example.

If you are wanting Georgians, KD2's are easy enough and worth the effort. I enjoy them daily.

Thanks ALK for the new XO's. (I know you're lurking)

  4. Oscarear and I are on the same page but with different ALK XO's. My choice was two fold in choosing the ALK Universals. I simply don't have the funding for the steep slope unit (yet) and the Universals can be updated.

I am the proud owner of David Harris' (to the best of my knowledge) first 2"horn. After having listened to many examples of mid-horn design, I am pleasently surprised with their audio presentation. My testing equipment is nothing more than the ears the Lord provided and 50 years of buying, building, trading and modifying corner horn design speakers.

The proof, be it as thin as suggested, maybe less than approprate for a few of the participants (so be = it), but in light of the results, I for one am VERY pleased with the efforts of Mr. Harris and his resulting horn.

    Thank You David Harris,

    Gary

  5. As long as we are voting.. and i'm someone that has had the pleasure of extensive listening to both.

I would cast my vote for the ALK Universal's. Reason being the components that are currently in place like the ALK's, especially with the JBL 2404H Tweeters which were a touch over bearing with the Crites A/4500 XO for whatever reason.

Crites A/4500 or ALK Universals would be an improvment over a old set of AA by a mile (maybe more?).

  6. Hey Dave,

Now you have hit the nail on the head,

I record old disc's to tape because it does a excellent job of reproduction . Using a TD124 through a good phono stage and a Tascam R2R is the way to collect music that simply does not exist for purchase and other than the cost of the tape ... it's free.

Finding the old recordings is a big part of the experience and pleasure involved in gathering a collection.

  7. If the purpose of adding wallboards is to improve the sweetspot location which comes into question when attempting to adjust/set a KHorn in a corner, why is it necessary to extend the backboard as far as (most) everyone has done?

Seems the issue is getting LF energy past/around the backboard and from firing that LF into the wall is the issue. If so, would not adding 12" or so of back/wallboard, (say) out to the top hat forward return edge accomplish basically the desired result of pointing the LF energy forward?

Or am I out of bounds thinking once LF sound waves get a change of direction, they are not going to modify their (basic) re-directed path without intercept.

Where was it I visited a church and was witness to the whispering wall?

    Gary

  8. Yes...

Living in Houston, dealing with weather and a history of my tv being toasted by lightning and a PE friend suggesting it would be positive to use something to smooth the occasional trama that occurs from the typical sources... you bet I've got a Powervar 12 (in fact I have 2). I'm not exactly sure what they do but my Panasonic monitor and all of the other gear plugged into these things have never had an issue. The A/C on the other hand has been smoked along with the washing machine from transformer/lightning hits. Last time this occurred was a couple of years back, when the transformer (on a pole across the street) was struck (boy, talk about a bang) and the insurance guy thanked me for having the Powervar units in place as he presented me with a check for repairs.

I would suggest checking your ground rod if you havn't in the last few years. As for the typical protection strip, if yours has been in place for a period of time, I suggest you open it for a visual inspection to insure it has not fried and continues to forward the impression of providing whatever service its reputed design suggested. Yes, they sometime function in spite of being toasted!

    Thank You

  9. 2.2uf 250V seems to be the preferred value for this situation. I mention this in lieu of suggestion's from sources better at dealing with these particular recievers over an extended period of time.

Size, design criterial and allowable space are the main limitation.

My inquiry hinged with design of the cap..which is a better design (axial or radial)?

Most of the caps in the audio path used in XOs are typically axial. Since this bypass cap is being used as a power source bypass and not in the audio path, is it a concern which dersign to use if there is an option and if so, why, (or) is it simplier to just use whatever will fit at the desired value?

  10. Hi Dave,

I do believe the bass bin for the KD2 is a smaller volumn than the KHorn after looking at your picture.

Are you using the 19" horn?

A couple of wedges glued together and screwed in place under the 26 lb 2482's did a good job for supporting the horn's.

BTW, did I ever get you some pictures of the finished tops (my memory is toast)?

    Gary

  11. For Grin's, Look at some drawings of establisbed designs. After building more than a few folded bass bins, I've found the tighter the fit and longer the path to the wall (within reason) makes for a more acceptable bin.

Case in point, the difference in the bass bin volume of the 3 EV designs.

Patrician.. 18" driver in a big set-up worked well in a accordingly large room but in a typical home environment is way too much speaker.

Georgian.. 15" driver in a relatively smaller bin & room worked well etc..

KD2... 15" driver in a tightly fitted bin (same aprox. size as a K-Horn, may be even smaller) with 3/4" HDFB or plywood ends up being close to toast (for me). No overpowering resonance and it's a listenable system that can be enjoyed endlessly sans fatigue, which says a bunch for PWK's capability as a audio design engineer.
