  1. You're right - many choices. I have a Lakland 5 string and an ancient Sceptre 4 string that needs some TLC. I'm still thinking about grabbing a Fender Geddy Lee which is pretty nice for about $700. Rather fast neck on that one. I have jumbo hands too. I'd suggest a local music store. Guitar Center or bigger. Bass Central in Orlando type store. Local is nice because you can get adjustments on those big ole necks. Under 500 bucks I'd suggest a used, better instrument and there are many nice choices. Music Mans are very popular and you can't go wrong with a decent used jass or precision. I'm not a Gibson Bass fan. Can always grab a Hoffner Icon for $350 to see if you stick with it then give it to the nephew when you finally grab that Lakland. I recently bought a smallish Eden Amp (Mesa Boogie too much $$$) but still miss my old tube Ampeg B-15. Saw this at Bass Central in Orlando (http://www.basscentral.com/2003/used.shtml) - these are very nice Used As New Sting Ray 4 String, Natural Finish, Maple Fretboard, White Pickgaurd, Case Retail $2000 Sale $1099 Never Been On Stage, Could Sell As New!!!!! Hope that helps
  2. Thanks Phill, I study on that idea bit. Currently using a SL-D2 and have a spare from a garage sale that is the same model with perhaps a record size setting.
  3. Thanks for the suggestions. I think I have a copy of Blow by Blow stuffed in a box somewhere plus the one I've been listening to. I'll have to investigate a bit closer. There and Back I find quite nice, likely best known for Star Cycle and The Pump. Can't go wrong with that one.
  4. Wired, but I think There and Back might be my favorite.
  5. Finally drug out all the vinyl and now feel I need a bit of an upgrade to the turntable (old Technics). Like to not go too crazy in case the passion fades or goes digital, so I'd hope to be in the under $500 range and have eyeballed a few - Thorens TD158, MH MMF2.1, Rega P1 and Pro-Ject Debuts. Any advice on these or other/better selections would be most appreciated. Currently spinning Jeff Beck. Thanks
  6. Well I'm learning a lot here. So far, I'd say I've been swayed toward the Wright side of the equation basis customer service - and I'm peering at the new 300B offerring. I really appreciate the information, and even offers, here as I am fortunate enough to have the money to buy "something", but don't want to waste it. I finally ran the concept of the Jubilees past my wife and actually mocked up a 70 inch DLP screen in the living room and said picture big ole Klipsh 535's on each side. I was amazed she didn't say no, or yes, but not no. To me, that's a first step victory. Our room is fairly big - I'll have to measure it, but I'd say about 45x24. Working on the speakers and the amps will follow - gotta say again thanks for helping. When I get a few spare moments I'll share my silly story about wife and I dancing in the living room when the stereo set off the alarm shatter detector .... Have a great holiday weekend, we're doing ham, brauts, turkey legs and too much beer, wine and spirit(s).
  7. Thanks Kev - I appreciate the update. Too bad, as his product sounds pretty nice. Perhaps you have some recourse via the credit card company. I'd definitly be upset and now I am warned. Regards
  8. Good comments so far and I appreciate you all taking the time to help. I do really like the jubilees, but not so sure the wife will! I think I'll call and try to get info on veneer just for the sake of it. That might help. And I'm cautiously watching the Welborne site and thanks for the cautinoary words. I'm not stuck on anything yet except I do want a very efficient system and like the Klipsch horn systems. Pauln hit it on the head for me, I'd keep a big amp around in case I need chase off my wife for a while. I suppose that's a new thread at some point. I see lots of opinions on the 3-4 watt 2A3 systems versus the 7-9 watt 300B systems. I figure I did enough damage to my sensitive lil ears playing in bands in the 70's and 80's that sonically they would likely both be lovely. So for a guy who used about 300 fender and 100 marshall watts I figured weaning myself down to about 8 outta keep me out of a rehab facility. I can certainly see how popular the Wrights and Moondogs are and that does speak volumes. Thanks again to all who respond as the choices are many and your thoughts help.
  9. Hello all, I've enjoyed lurking for a while and am getting close® to making a few decisions. I see a pair of 1980 Khorns on ebay that sounds like they are in nice shape (2 grandish, not near home, but we like roadtrips). I'm considering powering them with two 300B Paramounts or two Welborne Terraplane 300B's. Fleapower is new to me, but I've always loved tube Fender and Marshall stuff, so I'm going to leap in. So, any suggestions if I'm on the wrong track, and should I feel okay with these older vintage speakers or is it better to just buy new ones? Thanks.
