Thanks for the info Usnret. I will give the stock Jolida a listen this weekend at my local shop. I see your unit is the modded version. Did you ever listen to the stock version vs the modded setup? The modded setup is now about $1300 (new) vs the $500 stock(used). That is a significant jump in price depending on how much it would effect the sound?

I came across an used Jolida Model JD 100A CD player. This is a Vacuum Tube Compact Disc Player, 12AX7A.Tube Complement.
How much better sounding do you think this player would be then my current Onkyo 6 disc CD/DVD player? I am sure it sounds better, but for a used price of $500, does it significantly sound better? I always hear so much about tube components on this site and it got me thinking about doing an upgrade to my CD player. Any thoughts? -
If you're going to upgrade in the reference line, at least go up to the RF-82 or higher. Moving up to the 62's from the 52's is not a significant upgrade in my opinion. Also I agree with the others about upgrading the center and to also to match the fronts. What kind of receiver and sub are you using?

I used to own a pair of 82's for about a year before I got the 83's so I am pretty familiar with their sound. My uncle has a complete WF-35 HT setup in his living room, powered by an Onkyo 806. To me the 82's had a fuller sound and significant amount more bass response over the 35's. The 35's though seemed more clear/crisp or maybe more forward in the mid range is the way I would describe it. This was under normal listening levels. At high spl I found the 82's had less distortion than the 35's. Don't be fooled, both will play very loud and very clear with any decent amp/receiver powering them. The looks of the 35's seem to be their winning feature. My Aunt never even balked at the idea of having the 35's in their main living room. Most wives, gf, ect, don't like the idea of bigger speakers in their living rooms, but she didn't mind the 35's. I think that is the appeal of the WF series. I personally think the 82's are better speakers, but if you are someone that needs to have the look and sound combo, then the 35's might be the route to go. I actually really like the look of the RF series, but I guess I could see how some might not.

About four years ago I picked up a ProMedia 2.1 cpu speaker system at Best Buy. I was amazed by the Klipsch sound and knew I had to hear what else they offered. Now fast forward a couple years later and I have 83's in my home. I love the sound.

I wouldn't go less than the RF-82's in the reference line. Not to say the lower speakers are bad, but you said it might be your last speaker purchase and you don't want upgrade-its. What kind of sub do you have or plan to purchase? You could probably drop to the RF-62 or RF-52, but then I would say you should get a beefier sub to help in the lower fq. Have you ever thought about the WF-35's? They have looks and great sound for thier size. Add a decent sub and they really shine.

I think this former thread sums up the differences very nicely.
-
I vote Onkyo. I personally think Denon's are thin sounding and not as friendly to setup/tweak. Just my opinion on the ones I have used in the past. Maybe the latest models are different?
-
I agree with lagger. Stick with what you have until you have the funds to buy something decent. I second the NAD call or anything that has Audyssey. Check out some newer slightly used Marantz, B&K, NAD, Integra gear maybe.
-
Agreed, the RC64 is pretty smooth and sounds great. Definitely get those 83's when you have a chance, you will not regret.
-
I have the NAD M25 pushing my 83's and can't say enough good about this amp. It made a huge difference over the previous Onkyo 804 that was powering the speakers.
-
I would give the 83's a listen. They are a rockin speaker in my opinion. For pre-amp maybe look at B&K, NAD, Marantz, Rotel, Integra, ect..
-
Do it correct from the start and just get the 63's. A much better speaker than the 82's in my opinion.
-
Do whatever you can to keep / fix the RSW 10d. No need to downgrade because of a shipping mistake. I am sure Vanns has a way to deal with this.
-
I would get the sub 12 unless you are trying to save space. The XW 300 just didn't have that low grunt or high output I thought when listening. Though the digital controls on the 300 are nice.

With all due respect to the Onkyo and Yami recommendations, to me they just don't make it into the next level of performance with the likes of NAD, Marantz, Intergra, Rotel, Sherwood, ect....
Seeing that you are considering receivers close up to 2k, its my opinion that the later mentioned brands have superior power, sound and capabilities over the Denon's, Yami's, Onkyo's. The decoding of the codecs is becoming less of an issue seeing that most of the new Blu-Ray players are doing the decoding internally. I guess then it really comes down again to what is in the budget. Let us know how it works out.

Considering you are looking at the Yamaha RX-V3900 I would check out the NAD T775 or T785. Both are not too far off the price of the Yami and from what I hear sound great. Only thing is they don't yet support the new audio codecs, but I would think the updated versions would be coming out around the new year.
-
I haven't personally heard it, but I have the NAD T175 and each are very similar except the785 also has the amplifier section. I love the 175 and think it sounds very clean / smooth and is very user friendly. I assume the 785 can't be too far off. I would find a local dealer if possible and give the 785 a listen.

At a minimum I would at least move up to the Sub 12. It's not much more $ and you get a lot better frq. respsonse.
-
Actually Vanns.com has the cherry RSW 10-d on sale for $499. That is a really good price on this sub, but the cherry doesn't work for a lot of people in their setup. If cherry is not an issue I would buy it.

I personally don't find this to be a huge upgrade. I do believe the RSW 10d is a better sub in every way, but at the same time if I was going to upgrade I would at least go up to the RT 10d or 12d. Unless you can snag the RSW 10d at a great price then that might make the difference.
-
Has anyone heard this new one yet? Any opinions on the sound? I know it is 6k and many can build a better one for cheaper, but just wondering if not going the route of DIY, this could be an attractive option in the future.
-
I second the NAD call. Great sound compared to many of the regular receivers out there. I have heard rumor of NAD coming out with the updated versions of the T175 and the M15 also.
-
Just my personal opinion, I don't find this to be much of an upgrade, if at all. Hearing both of the referenced speakers, I think this is more of a horizontal upgrade. If you listen to each and really like the sound of the RB-61, then I guess go for it. I would think moving up to the RB 81 would be a more significant upgrade for not too much more money.

There is a new hotel in downtown Chicago called the Wit. On the 27th floor they have a bar/lounge called "The Roof". It's a 7,000 square foot indoor / outdoor lounge with awesome city views. So I walk in an immediately notice that the sound is bumping pretty good I look up and see Klipsch outdoor speakers. I am not familiar which ones they are but this is a great place for Klipsch to have their sound piping out to. Here's a pic...
