  1. I picked up a pair of '78 La Scala's a few weeks back.....great condition.....all original components....no upgrades/mods. I have them hooked to a Sansui AU-717 integrated amp. Overall, the sound is very good at lower volumes, but can get pretty fatiguing (harsh sounding) at mid/high volumes.....especially with female vocals. I am using a hi-def type dvd player to play CD's. What should I be looking at to improve the sound.....within reason? I really don't want to get into tubes....can't afford it. What would be the top 2 or 3 things that I should change in my system? Would I hear a noticable difference by upgrading the LS's a bit....like the crossovers, which are type AA, (like putting in new caps) and maybe upgrading the tweeters? Secondly, is there a much better amp for the speakers than the Sansui.....say under $500 (new/used)? Lastly, would I get much improvement in picking up a better CD player? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks, Hogfan
  2. I appreciate all the input. I was hoping the bass bin of a LS center was not needed. Therefore, would a Heresy be better than an Academy?
  3. I am in need of a center speaker for my set of LS's. I do not have room to add another LS. However, I was wondering if I could use just the top section of a LS (tweeter/midrange/crossover)? If so, I could make it work in my setup. Does the center speaker handle any lower frequencies that the midrange horn would not pick up? I appreciate your input and guidence on this. Thanks! Hogfan
  4. James, Much appreciated. I tried your technique and it worked great. Thanks! Hogfan
  5. I would like to incorporate my 2 channel Sansui AU-717 into my HT setup, to drive my front L/R speakers. I currently have an HK 347 AVR, which is pretty good for HT, but nowhere near the Sansui for 2 channel listening. I don't have the resources nor the space for two separate systems. Any feedback on how I can connect the Sansui to the HK to accomplish both HT and 2 Ch, would be much appreciated. Hogfan
  6. Given the use of my mains as 60% + for music, would Chorus II's be a significant improvement from my Quartet's? At one point, I was thinking about picking up a pair of Forte II's, but was unsure if the move would be justified with improved sound. I was told that I should look at either the CW or LS route.....if I wanted a big improvement. If the Chorus II's would provide this "wow" factor I'm looking for, I will certainly put them on my list. However, a pair of Klf-20's are a few hrs away from me and it just got me thinking about a "legend" setup. Thanks, Hogfan
  7. Coytee, Thanks for your input. My corners are not perfect....one side of each corner is only about 16" long.....that end of room is a built-in entertainment center that is recessed about 12 inches.....not making for normal corners. I have corners, but I don't think they will fit K-horns in a perfect way. Further, my room is 14 x 20.....with the short side housing my gear. Hogfan
  8. I have been considering upgrading my speakers for the past several months. I currently have Quartet's....L-C-R, in an HT setup. However, I use my system mostly for music....probably 60%. I have been considering moving up to Cornwall's/La Scala's, but space would be somewhat an issue.....could make it work. I have recently been looking at going the KLF-20 route.....with the C-7 at center. Would I hear a noticable improvement going with this setup, over my Quartet's? The KLF-20's would fit nicely in my room, but I don't want to make a switch for little to no improvement in sound. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks, Hogfan
  9. tromprof, I appreciate the offer, but I will probably just go with the Sony XDR, unless I can find the matching TU-717 at a good price.
  10. Thanks for your input. I would rather have the matching TU-717, but only if the price is right. Otherwise, the Sony might be a very good option for me. Hogfan
  11. I just picked up a Sansui AU-717 integrated amp the other day and would like to find a good tuner to mate with it at a reasonable price. I hear the TU-717 is the perfect match, but I have not been able to find one much below $200. I am looking to spend around $100 or so.... maybe less, if that is possible. I listen to the radio very little, but certainly need to be able to when I have an interest. Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks, Hogfan
  12. I have not seen any in AR. However, I regrettfully passed on a set up in MO earlier this week.....graded out at about 6/7 on a 10 scale with AL crossovers and blown tweeters......$500. I wish I would have gone ahead and picked them up. A little work and they would have been pretty nice. Now, contemplating whether to go back up and get them. Hogfan
  13. Yes, will be using her ipod.....utilizing a playlist. So, LS's without a doubt? Would the Forte II's work for this size room? I don't want to end up with an underpowered setup for this size room. Thanks, Hogan
  14. OK, I need some speaker advice.... We are putting on a birthday party in a few weeks for our teenage daughter.....and expecting 100+ kids to show. The party will be held in a ballroom that is about 60 x 60. I considered hiring a DJ, but have decided not to and just provide my own equipment (and save the $400+). Here is my delimma: Would my Quartet's provide adequate sound for this size room? I actually have 2 pair. I have been looking at upgrading speakers in my man-cave....to at least the Forte II's (there is a pair near me for sale), but possibly La Scala's. If the Quartet's won't handle the party, I need a pair of speakers that will, while fitting in well in my man-cave. They would be driven with a Yamaha receiver (100 wpc). If I can not get there with my own equipment, then I guess I will just hire it out....I hate to drop $400 on a DJ. Thoughts? Thanks, Hogfan
  15. Claude, I'm in Little Rock. I am now unsure which direction to go. Either stay with my Quartet's or upgrade.....I am not sure what to upgrade to. I probably would only pick up a sub if I upgrade and restart with a 2.1 setup. I don't want to upgrade just to upgrade. I have been told that I would not see much improvement in sound moving to Forte's from the Quartet's. That has led me to considering a pair of LS's. I am very puzzled...... Thanks, Greg
  16. OK, you all now have me backing away from the La Scala's and rethinking my current setup....which is Quartet's across the front (3). To anyone out there who has listened to Quartet's, would I see much improvement in moving to Forte's? Mainly, for just the L/R channels.....and I could eventually pick up an Academy. However, please keep in mind that my setup is used primarily for music and watching sports.....maybe 20% for movies. When I first started to thinking about how I could improve the sound in my room (which is a dedicated man-cave), I thought that upgrading to Cornwall's or LS's for a 2-ch setup would be ideal (and picking up a good sub).....and slowly rebuilding a 5 ch environment. Again, I am seeking the best sound possible while staying in the heritage line of speakers.....I am looking for the WOW effect from myself and my friends. The Quartet's sound really good.....but I feel there is room for improvement. If my room size (15 x 20) would not support either the CW or LS (in the hunt for the WOW effect), would Forte's get me there? Thanks for all your help! Greg
  17. Thanks guys... OK. So it sounds like I need to go the LS route, even if they may not fit in the room as well as Forte's. Further, the LS's I'm looking at have the AL type crossovers....is this OK, or should I look for the AA type crossover (seems I have seen more favorable discussion surrounding the AA types)? Lastly, what would be a good sub for me to pick up that would match well with the LS's.....around $500 or so? I would favor a tighter and more detailed bass.....mostly used for music. Thanks for your input! Greg
  18. Being a current Quartet owner, would I see much benefit in upgrading to the Forte II's? Or should I look more towards the CW's? My room is 14 x 20, with the Quartet's in the corners of the 14' wall. A pair of Forte II's are available locally, but I don't want to upgrade without much improvement. Lastly, I am still eying a pair of La Scala's.....but they would not fit in the room as well as Forte's......and I am not sure if the LS's would over power my room. Any thoughts? Thanks!
  19. OK...I need to pick up a sub.....used about 50/50 HT/Music. Which would I be better off with.....the HSU VTF-3.3 or the Elemental Designs A5-350? My room is 15X20x8. Both companies have sales going on through today.....$100 off each. HSU is $694 shipped and eD is $700 shipped. I would appreciate your help and recommendations. Thanks, Hogfan
  20. I did post it originally in the Garage Sale section....but realized it probably should have been in the HT section....so I added it here. I did not know how to move the post to a different section. I have gotten some good feedback so far. Thanks, Hogfan
  21. Hey guys....I need some help. What would be a good/fair price for a pair of used RF-7's....say in good condition? Secondly, how much improvement would I see with the RF-7's over my current set of Quartet's? I am just exploring the possibility of making a change....I currently have Quartet's across the front (L/C/R). Just wondering if it would be worth changing to the RF-7's and picking up a matched center. I would appreciate any input and advice you have. Thanks, Hogfan
  22. Chuck, I believe with the older vintage Klipsch models (with a letter in the serial #) started with "A" in 1960 and each year added an alphabet......with "Z' for 1985. At least, this is what I have been told. Hogfan
  23. I don't have my mains yet....I am actually looking at Heresy's, Quartet's, and Forte's.....leaning more toward the Forte's. I am just trying to get a feel for what would be the best match for each of these speakers, as it may determine what I buy (if that makes sense). Klipsch tech support actually recommended the RC-52/62 for all three speakers. I have not seen the RC line listed on this forum as a match, leading me to where I am now.......asking for advise, rather than automatically relying on my feedback from tech support. Thanks, Hogfan
  24. OK, I need some help here. What is the best center speaker matchup with the heritage line as mains (Heresy, Quartet, Forte, etc...)? As I understand it, it would be best to use the same speaker as your mains, but that is not an option for me......space is an issue. I hear that the Academy and KLF-C7 would be the next best options, but it looks like they are going for a premium on the used market ($250+++). Would the RC-52 be a good fit? Just trying to find something in greater supply (more current) that would work well. Hogfan
