  1. That may be what I'll get then if it can slam pretty close to my hk730. I bottom out the bass sometimes when watching movies though, do you think that'll damage the tube amp? Sometimes I want to push it really hard with music too for extended perioids. Do you think I should just get a more powerful SS amp for that reason? I'd hate to spend that much and break it.
  2. I checked the speaker wire is fine. Someone else mentioned 'protection mode' because I noticed when I turn the amp up real loud the volume gets real low, then when I turn the volume knob down it goes back up again.
  3. Yeah I'm pretty much looking for bass that shakes your body, These KG4's have big woofer in the back that are perfect for that.
  4. I had a little tube amp and loved the sound, but I remember it didn't have much oommph for bass. My hk 730 had plenty of bass and was only 30 watts/channel, so can I get the same result from something like a Scott or Fisher tube integrated? I listen to rock so bass is fairly important. I don't want to buy a sub. My speakers are KG4 rated at 94dB @ 1watt/1meter.
  5. I didn't mention I had my turntable on top of it. That might have gotten it hot. It couldn't be a fuse because I'm still getting sound from the blown channel, it's just really low.
  6. I guess it's because of an impedance mismatch because I have 6ohm KG4's but this is the second amp I've blown. The first was a Marantz 2215 and now it's the HK730. I don't listen to it extrememly loud but there is a lot of bass in the movies. Or maybe it's because the speakers are rated at 100watts and the amps were 15 and 25 watts.
  7. I'm using my PC as a source and wondering if I can just hook it to an amp without a preamp? The pc software has volume and eq so I don't see why I'd really need a preamp. I could just run the rca from the pc directly into the amp. The reason I want to do it is 1) to save money and 2) I've heard stereos sound better without a preamp. The only thing I'm concerned with is if the volume would be hard to control, I've never tried this before. I was thinking about doing this with a B&K ST-140 and my KG4's. Also, are there amps (without preamps) that recieve digital input like from a digital coaxial or S/PDIF?
  8. A Newbie chiming in here! Revelations: FLAC music files with Auzentech sound card & the X-Fi Crystalizer is a great sounding source. Not as good as LPs but better than CD imo. Listening to punk records recorded at high levels is a blast on a low power tube amp. Klipsch KLF-20's are living beings! Everything sounds better when you're at someone else's house. You can have a superb system with a little research and little money. Misconceptions Expensive cables sound better than cheap ones. Expensive cable can't sound worse than cheap ones. Audiophile equipment always sounds better than the junk at Best Buy. Audiophiles know that they're talkinga about.
  9. I heard that the B&K st-140 is a great amp with Klipsch. You might be able to get one for $200 if you're patient. Although you won't be able to search for B&K here, apparently the search engine won't do &'s.
  10. Hi Everyone, I've been reading here and around the net that the B&K ST-140 is great amp that matches well with Klipsch. Has anyone who's heard it with Klipsch that can describe the sound? I was wondering if it was overly smooth because I listen to a lot of metal and rock. Right now I have the KG4's but I plan on getting some KLF-20's when I can. Or maybe someone could recommend a different amp? Thanks! What would really be cool if there was a 2-channel stereo that could do something like the Grado sr-60 manages to accomplsh, really enerrgetic and brings out the electric guitars but not harsh.
  11. Can anyone recommend a preamp for the B&K ST-140? It would be nice if it had digital input since my source is a pc soundcard, but not absolutely necesarry. I don't care about home theatre processing or anything more than 2-channel. I don't even need treble and bass control come to think of it, since I can control all that from the pc.
  12. I guess I can do that, I just have no idea what I'm doing.
  13. The last owner did that before he sold it. Now I just noticed the right channel has more bass than the left, LOTS more bass. The left is still clearer but doesn't have much bass at all. Thats funny because I could have sworn the left had more bass earlier.
  14. Which ones are they? I couldn't find 'coupling' in the manual. (thanks btw for the manual!)
  15. I've been listening to my KG4s with the HK 730 I just bought off ebay and the left channel is defintely better sounding than the right. At first I thought it was my ears but when I switched speaker cables on the receiver it switched. Does the same thing with different sources and cables as well. The left channel has more bass and better midrange, even a little louder sounding but barely.. Is there something I can do thats not too techincal to fix this? I don't know how to fix electronics. Thanks.
  16. I'm about to order an EMU (E-MU?) 1212m to play music, games and movies with, and was just wondering what advice somone could give a newb on how to make music with it? I've never made digital music before but I'd like to try. I know this is a silly question but the whole music-making thing on the computer is so confusing I thought maybe someone could help or tell me an easy way to do it. This card seems to be perfect for that. Also I read the card is great not just for music but also games and movies, has that been your experience?
  17. If I run digital optical out (s/pdif) from my pc to a reciever dac, does the pc still downsample the signal to 48khz? I'd like to be able to get the original signal to the reciever without the pc messing with it first. Also, will the digial optical out work for movies as well as music? Thanks!
  18. I can't find too many amps that have 4ohm speaker hookups, so how am I supposed to hook up my KG4's to the normal 8hm amps? I've already blown a Marantz with these.
  19. Which doi you think sounds best? I have a Marantz 2215, wasn't too impressed with the sound with the KG4's.
  20. I'm thinking in the $300 - $500 dollar range. I was going to spend more but I just recently realize I *need* an LCD tv.
  21. I have a Marantz 2215 hooked up to the KG4's right now and the left channel is blown. I haven't heard HK or Yamaha. I imagine it had something to do with the 4ohm impedence on the speakers. It never really sounded that good to me. CD's sound terrible on it. That might be because of the cheap Marantz CD player I use. Maybe I just need to try a higher wattage amp, the Marantz is only 15 watts per channel.
  22. I remember now I used to have the au-9900 with the matching tuner. It was supposed to be a great tuner which is probably why I got $600 for it. I remember the system sounded great when I listened to the radio but everything else was just 'ok'.
  23. Thanks for the info! Do you think they would be a good deal for $200? It would probably be hard to resell them.
  24. Has anyone heard the JBL 6010 monoblock amps? I couldn't find anything on google about them. Thanks!
  25. Thanks for the help everyone! I'm interested in the Sansui. I think I could get one much cheaper than the other gear. I heard than vintage Hafler from the same era is just as good, and that the Adcom is even better. I'm thinking I might not need to spend so much on the amp because if I'm not going to be able to hear a big differenceit might be worth it to get something like Sansui or simiar.
