  1. If I wanted to listen to Janis Joplin - I'd listen to the real Janis Joplin. Not some tatoo'd, bad-teethed, dumpy-lookin chick with no eyes when she smiles Janis wanna be. Can she sing and strum the guitar - yes. So what. She & 1000's of others out there can too. And talk about not being able to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear!!! OMG.....the wardrobe and make up they put her through. YIKES!!! Anyhow........

Is Lee something "special"? No - not really. Plenty of folks like him out there too. However.....the reason I'm glad he won is because he is what I thought that show is supposed to be all about. Someone who is not a professional singer but just your average "Joe" who maybe sings in front of his friends/family/church/whatever and nothing more who decides to give it a shot. If you look at the background of this years top Idol folks they're either in a band or have been performing live since they were kids. He!! Crystal Bowersux started performing when she was 8 years old and has been getting paid money to perform and to support herself.

Yep, this pretty much sums up this season of American Idol. They got rid of the most interesting singers at the very beginning, which made the rest of the season a flop. And with no Simon after this season, I don't see this show having much success in the future either.

As far as experience, Lee is not exactly a newcomer to the music scene either. He already had a couple indie-label CDs before American Idol.

Who knows, maybe Crystal will come out with something decent? I thought of her as a Janis Joplin wannabe myself, but her duet with Alanis Morisette makes me think she might be able to do something more contemporary.

I do agree that her "alternative" look cost her some votes. There is no doubt in my mind.

  2. I am running the fronts on large at 100hz. I guess it could be that but it didnt sound like woofer distortion to me. I would think they could handle such a low volume setting but I have been wrong before.

Yea the sondtrack does really impress.

Large at 100Hz? How does that work?

  3. Are you sure that the TV has digital pass-thru? My Samsung has "digital passthrough" but all it passes is two-channel audio.

As far as your concern about switching if you decide to "split" the video and audio signals-- that problem is easily solved with a Harmony remote.

Edit: Looking on AVS forum, I found this post:

Which reminds me -- ONE PROBLEM with this TV. For some stupid reason, the optical digital out on the TV will output in stereo only when viewing an HDMI source. Panny tech support confirmed this, which makes the output really useless. It could have been VERY NICE to have a single optical audio cable running from the TV, but I found 50-foot cable cheap enough it doesn't matter too much. But not passing an optical signal in 5.1 (at least) was a real bonehead move by Panasonic.

(I don't know that it was a "bonehead move," I just think it is probably more difficult than us laymen realize).

  4. Why do you hope so? I think Ellen will be a good addition to the show. I always FF'ed over everything Paula said, so I'm glad she's gone.

I don't know what kind of musical experience Ellen will bring to the table, though, and I wonder if she will be too nice to the contestants? We'll see, but I look forward to the new season.

  5. Sons of Anarchy is probably my favorite show. It's the one I look forward to most, anyway. I've converted a couple people, but I am constantly recommending it. I am really exited about the new season. First episode started off with a bang (several bangs, actually, and in more than one connotation). I have a SAMCRO long sleeved t-shirt, and am glad it's starting to get a bit cooler outside, so I can wear it again.

I also love True Blood. I thought it would be a girly vampire show when it started, but I gave it a try anyway, and am glad I did! Sucks that Sunday's episode is the season finale. It will be back, though.

  6. what makes a graphics card blu ray compatible? first I ever heard of a gpu being blu ray compatible.

Whether or not it supports hardware acceleration is one thing, so your processor isn't doing all the work. A good graphics card that can do hardware decoding is a night and day difference. Playback is a lot smoother, and less taxing to your system. Keeps overall temps down as well.

Also, being HDCP compliant is a huge plus, if your monitor is also HDCP compliant. If it isn't, you have to run extra (expensive) software in the background just to get Blu-Rays to play.

I have an ATI Radeon HD3870 in both my main computers. You can find them online for ~65 now. Unfortunately, they were a bit more expensive when I first bought them. As Jay mentioned earlier, size is definitely a consideration, as these cards are very large. I had to make some modifications (a real hack job, to be honest--I actually had to resort to using scissors) to my motherboard on one of my computers to get the card to fit.
