  1. Thanks to Bailey I have replaced the woofers with vintage Klipschorn woofers circa 1975. Looking for Crites Tweeters but would consider K-77 at the right price.
  2. How do I get my Birch Cornwalls to look something like this?
  3. Can I get Mahoghany veneer from Klipsch, and it is the same supplier as they used in the 90's. Like to match the 400's
  4. Michael, Can you fix the rattle in the woofer? Looks like the Crites are no longer for sale as my paypal was refunded. My guess is these were pushed pretty hard at one time so Im on the fence between repairing.replacing.
  5. Thanks for the advice. I was hoping to sand and then use Watco to leave them a stock finish but there are some gouges as well as stains so we'll see. What about the B-3 crossovers? How do I know if they are working properly? Also, are the EV tweeters Bob sells and improvement or should I just buy the K-77 drop in diaphragm kits from him? Thanka again.
  6. Last one. Any help or advice as to whtehr to stay original or change things appreciated.
  7. Nother pic. Did I mention one grill has been attacked by a cat?
  8. Picked up my first pair of Heritage Speakers. They appear to be CBR circe 1983. 35Y265 and 266. The GOOD, they were quite inexpensive (less than $1 per lb.). The Bad, both Tweeters Blown, and a "rattle" in one Woofer (which sounds pretty bad). The cabinets have also seen a few moves and parties, including colorful drinks and at least one band. Anyway, I need advice on replacing/rebuilding the tweeter/woofer. Should I upgrade change the woofer/tweeter or just try and fix what I've got. Speakers have B-3 croosovers which appear to be in good shape but I don't know how to check them. Finally, should I just get the sander out and hae at the speakers, or is there a preferred method of getting the cabs back into shape. Thanks in advance. Jeff
  9. Dean, Thanks for the reply and info. I will try and tweak and then bi-amp. The KSP can actually be tri-amped/wired. But I'll go with the bi-amp first. I don't think clipping is the issue but lightening the load may help. Jeff
  10. Thaks for the continuing comments. I will say that I think the woofers are adjusted properly although only one is working now and the SVS takes up most of the bass duties. Crossover is usually at 80-90hz. Movies are great on this system ie U-571. The brightness I speake of can be sitting in the optimal position or inches from the speaker. Robert Plant seems to be screeching, Eddie Mercury too. Increase the volume, increases the dissonance. Even my Ksp-s6 sound harsh. My room has carbet is well laid out and the ypao does little if any adjustments, its pretty balanced for an ht room. The 400 are toed in and the surrounds on stand properly placed. Its not an issue of dissonance, vibration or lack of imaging the raw sound seems to harsh, and bright. To the previous poster. The KSP line ranks right up there with the rf-5, and rf-7 as they were made before the reference series and were around $3500 for a pair (xtra for mahoghany) and $5000+ for a 5 speaker set. Theay are high quality, heavy speakers, even the suurounds. They should sound as good or better than rf-83 or rf-7 imho. FYI, If anyone wants the receiver I will sell it and throw in a rx-v1600 that keeps shutting down after pwering up. $400 plus shipping paypal etc. Also, I came across a rotel rmb-1066 can I use this for power and by pass the yamaha? I agree that older yamaha receivers may not have these issues but the newer seem to. And for those that posted that all they have used is yammies, then where is the comparison or perspective. I just want the best, cleanest sound and it seems to me the klipsch/yammie can overemphasize the mid and horns which klipsch does so well making them a little too much. I am serious about selling and would welcome any suggestions on how to keep the yammie and change the sound or other HT (preferably 7,1) to power the system. Love this forum and the input, learned a lot./ Thanks jeff
  11. Finally, from my listening and tweaking this system I find the HT performs very well and 7 channel music is good too..but put vocally strong music in 2 channel like R. Plant, Seal, even Tracy Chapman or classical music and there is some harshness and brightness that is taxing especially at the volume I normally listen. So, if HT is OK its probably me but after coming across the Klipsch/Yamaha Oil/Water opinions before I thought I would see what you think. I know these aren't heritage speakers but they should be sounding better than they do and I don't know why. FYI, I have tried all three EQ settings offered by the receiver, low seems to work best. Probably should just keep it for movies and parties and have a separate 2 channel for music I dunno.
  12. Thanks for the responses. I think the speakers are well placed, receiver set at 8 0hms, and I have adjusted the tone which helps to some extent. The issue is aslo not really with bass but mids and highs. I calibrated the system with the ypao mic several times and think the room is optimized although it is a bit small 18X24, with vaulted ceilings. I think the yamaha and speakers are both properly dialed in. Even the setting like jazz, disco etc., all seem to impart the desired sound effect although I rarely, if ever, use them. The speakers image well and the surrounds blend seemlessly. Nothing seems out of whack but upon hearing a recording that I personally own played through a ps2, into r-3 set akimbo, with junk surrounds I was surpised that the cerra-mettalic, lightweight 3's sounded so much warmer, and less bright, than my 115lb KSp-400s. Thaks for all your input. I also have a set of DCM TF-350s set up as b-fronts, which seem a lot warmer and less harsh set up with the yamaha, although the clarity, volume and overall sound quality is not there, thay are less taxing to listen too. The DCM aren't great for movies etc, but I prefer them with LP's, at least with the yamaha I have now that's the way it is. Fyi I have the yamaha rx-v1500, denon dvd 1940ci and cd, and tara labs speaker wires.
  13. I have a complete KSP-400 5.1 set-up timbre matched and a yamaha rx-v1500. Long story short, I bought the ksp-400s because I heard them back in 2000 and was blown away, and picked up a nice mahoghany pair with center for $500 last year. I don't have a lot of experience with different systems. Anyway, I was listening to another friends rf-3's last night with a kenwood receiver and the sound was much "nicer." By nicer I mean warmer, less harsh and not as in your face as mine. Is this due to the yamaha and can I change some settings to ameliorate this issue or do I need a different brand of receiver. I've seen the above sentiment several times and was wondering if/why it is true. ANY suggestions on powering or changing my set-up welcome. thanks
  14. Or how to bypass it all with a 2 cgannel sub amp maybe? Please all suggestions welcome. Proablem is there amps go out so if the other goes soon then it would be better to run my hafler for the subs? Thx
  15. FYI Called Klipsch they do not carry the amp and the number they gave me for repair in michigan was busy ALL day. Bump
  16. Just had the dustcaps replaced in my woofers and now one speakers is blowing fuses when the speaker is hooked up. Fuse doesn't blow untilthe speaker is powered on so stand by works. Swapped speakers to check if that is the problem and it is not. Does the amp need to be fixed or replaced? Can I run a sparate amp to run both subs instead. Say a hafler DH 200 and by pass the amps? Thanks in advance. And let me know if you know where i can get an amp if it needs replaced.
  17. Danke will lfe limit sound to the subs and remove the muddle. they are cosmetically in good shape and feel fime, any way to find out if the are still perfoming up to specs? thanks
  18. Thanks, rx-1500 has no dedicated lfe out, but if using the sub out (like LFE) i think to limit the range, but this only affects the subs. COuld it be the ksp subs are not limited snd therefore trying to play too much music etc? FYI, i ser my crossover at 50hz for music (generally) and 80-90hz for movies.
  19. I''ve been running the hafler for the 2X rw-12d mostly with movies. It handles them at 4ohms,but does get a little warm for my comfort, but they have loads of power. How would I re-wire this for 8ohms? Also want to improve the bass from the ksp-400, they ae plenty loud but when pushed lose all tightness, they look fine and the amps work. Any suggestions for gettin deeper or more powerful/punchy bass from these puppies? I just can't justify buying another sub when ive got 2-15' and 2-12" klipsch in a 20x20 room. Any ideas? Thanks. MAybe buttkickers? Because I have plenty of base just not the ultra-low frequencies.
  20. System Yamaha AVR-1500 Hafler dh200 - pushing 2xRW-12d subs in a PROBOX made for cars (4 ohm) Front KSP-400's and ksf-5 above on high shelf Rear KSP-s6 Center KSP-C6 With this set-up the auto set-up poram produces almost even results for all the speakers, except for the subs which are turned way down. Overall, love the sound but think the bass should be deeper and punchier than what im getting out of the 400's. Since the ksp-400 has itsown sub there is no easy way to up the watts on the. It seens when turned up these lose punch and getcloudy. With all the bass and speakers i have in the room it should be more than enough but I seem to be missing deep HT bass. Should I buy a "true sub" like hsu or SVS to get the ultra lows. I'v got plenty of sound, but not the ultra low bass which i like sometimes. Also, are buttkickers/auro pro shakers a godd solution to ultra low bass? Finally, will sound improve greatly if I 1> bi or triwire the speakers or 2>use a more powerful/better quality amp rather than the yan rx-v1500. I love these speakers and the setup the speakers are perfectly matched (except for the rw-12 subs) which is importatnt to me. thanks in advance Can the woofers in the KSP-400 "wear out" they look to be in great shape and still get loud but it seems very loose. Which is ok for most music but not movies in my most humble of opinions. If so how do I check them and where can I get them? Monster surge protector too.
  21. From the web it loos like the Hafle can handle 4 ohm speakers. Would I be better off pushing the subs with the Hafler?
  22. My current options for powering theses subs are a hafler dh-200 and I also have an onkyo M 5140 with preamp sitting around. Thanks for any help.
