  1. I have it to.  For me, my biggest problem is that I clench my teeth.  Especially, when I'm sleeping.  Some mornings I'll wake up and the ringing is pretty bad and my teeth will actually be sore.  Have been trying to focus on not doing it, but it's such a pattern it's hard to break.

Us also, haven't been here much lately and not much chance of it happening anytime soon.

Is it a good 'On the Road Again' or necessity driven?  Being on the road for vacation, fun, is one thing, but being on the road for work, well, kind of wears me out.  So many times I wished that the family was with me on my ventures.  It would change the whole dynamic of the drive.  If you're traveling for fun, hats off to you.  If it's necessity driven, well, more power to you, it's a grind.

With everything being equal, the edge goes to the larger same quality woofer.  The RF 7 will be in a 3rd generation for good reason.  The real question is will it make a difference in your room?  With my last calibration mu RF 7 II's are XO at 100 Hz which is gaining my acceptance as the best XO in my system?

With 8 subs I can understand why you have them set at 100 hz.  Most of us will be lucky to set our mains at 80, or slightly lower, to achieve good reproduction.  Your setup is sort of an anomaly compared to most.  I would believe that the RF-7 III would best my KG 5.5's on a few levels.  Better sonic quality over years of design, height as far as driver, axis response, and better horn design.  Let's face it the RF-7 runs two active 10's versus two 8's with a larger cabinet design.  The RF-7 is designed to envelope you in sound, the RP-280F is to me, a great front runner in a smaller room with HT considerations.  Don't get me wrong, the RF-7 will work just as well with movies/music but for me it would be a big difference with music.  My vote is for the RF-7.

Nothing better than being home alone with your gear.  Oddly, without all of the 'noise' your system sounds better.  Plus, I can get on it with out being yelled at.  The neighbors aren't happy when this happens.  Oh well, let freedom ring, or resonate, which is what I prefer.

    80 Degrees @ 10Pm.

In from the farm run and started preparing the Dodge, good 4 Hrs prep for 1st trip of the year.

Last thing i had to do was check/Balance all tire pressures, passenger side / inside tire flat as road kill.:o No Biggie.

Hummmm, thought i heard something strange on the way home, but with Calif Chit roads its hard to tell sometimes.

I carry a new spare, so throw that on in the morning and get a new one in Reno.......

Checking tire pressures should not be the last thing you do, it should be the first thing you do in the AM.  All tire pressures are recommended at a 'Cold' rating.  Best to check them in the AM when they're not warmed up.  PSI will increase with heat, driving, so setting PSI when they're warm is a No-No.  Believe me, it matters.  I drive a ton, so forgive me for throwing a little 'Mom' at you.  Just trying to keep you safe.  Love, Mom.

This is in a neighborhood with Million dollar homes.  Seem to have read that Ford wheels are especially prone to this sort of theft.

Well, at least they tried to get it up off the rotors.  Thieves with a conscience, I don't think so.  Leverage was their need to pilfer.  Actually, kind of angers me, I hate thieves.  My family was robbed 4 times in Nipomo, CA back in the day.  We lived on 10 acres in a single wide mobile home, prime for the pickin'.  Nothing like coming home and finding all of your stuff ransacked.  You just feel dirty.

  7. So, riddle me this.  I don't have the room for 18" drivers to run the mid/low mid/upper bass range.  I come to you and say, "I have a UMAX 15 with 3000DSP with a hole around 65hz.  I'm thinking of running an 8" sub high pass at, let's say, 50hz - 55hz, with a low pass of 70hz to fill the void.  I want to run a 1000DSP to the 8".  What would your suggestions be?

Just doesn't matter with subs nowadays.  Some of the best and highest extending and most accurate midbass drivers are 18's.  Better to match than to try to partake in such things.  It's a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

I'm working off of old school thoughts.  I guess I'm not considering the dynamics of current driver/cab design and use.

Omnimic is a great tool and easy to learn as another option for taking measurements.  It is more expensive but, one can be up and running in 20 min.  It will take several days for the new user to learn the in's and out's of REW.  The manual is around 90 pages.

I saw that when I was looking at the REW setup process.  I believe the Omnimic kit is around $300?  Either way, I need something better than the RS SPL meter.  I still feel kind of cool when I use it.  How many other folks are even trying that hard.  Patting myself on the back here.

No more borrowing, finally picked one up when i purchased the Mini DSP.

Let us know how you like the mini-DSP.  I've been considering getting one for my baby HT setup in the basement.

The RS SPL meter is NOT very good in the subwoofer range. UMIK and REW is the way to go and works with any windows computer with a USB port..

Noted.  Next on my birthday wish list.

  12. So, I guess my question to everyone is this.  If you could have a choice of 2 scenarios, which would you choose?  Scenario one, two 15's ported/sealed, with two 8's ported/sealed, or scenario two, only two 15's ported/sealed.  To my layman brain, I would choose scenario one.  Why, I could tune the 8's to the upper low end, tune the 15's to pick up where I'm cutting the 8's.  Why, to me, certain size drivers are better suited to perform given tasks.  Hence, why we don't use 4" diameter dome tweets for our highs.

The null could just be the microphone position as well.

This is a Radio Shack SPL meter.  I mounted it on my camera tripod, with mic top at my ear level, centered in my listening position.  I need to get a Umik with REW software to really see what my little setup is doing.  I tested multiple times within that range to see what affects my PEQ, crossover settings had.  So, yeah, you could be totally right that with my SPL meter I'm 'seeing' something that may not be there.  I have to say though, I do love the DSP function of the 3000 DSP.

You're not going to boost a null with eq.  The best you can do is drop the peaks or move your listening position

Agreed.  That's what I've seen so far.  With my initial results I had the low pass set at 60, BW 12 db.  I ended up with the low pass at 75, with a 3.5, 4, db boost at 67.5, in the middle of the void, with a relatively high Q to try and narrow the boost to that particular bandwidth.  Funny thing is, with my worn out SW-10 I had a void in the 50 hz range.  With the UMAX it's in the 60's.  Question though, my old AVR has a low pass set at 200 hz.  No large, small, crossover setpoint, etc.  So, my KG 5.5's run at full range.  I measured with sub, mains active.  Could there be a cancellation with delay that is creating the 60 void?  Would positioning of the sub possibly change it?  Just curious.  Thanks!

  15. Here's my uneducated view, in my living room, before my wife made me move all my wares, I had an SVS 20-39 PCI ported cylinder in the front right corner of the room, and my little SW-10 active 10/12 passive right behind the couch, directly in the middle.  In my situation, I used the SW-10 to bring in more of the upper register as the 20-39 didn't have great response in the upper bass frequencies, to my ears anyway.  The near field of the SW-10 gave the music more of the punch and the 20-39 flaunted the lower register.  I blended crossover points by ear, tried phase, to no avail, but the darn setup rocked pretty hard, sounded good to me.  I'm sure if I had a mic/software, or have heard systems like you guys have, I may have a different opinion.  My point being, I don't see the negative in using different subs, as long as they're tuned right.

I just recently finished my single UMAX 15, and I'm still trying to get the sound right.  It's a 2.1 setup now, and I'm already considering a second one.  I only have an SPL meter now and found a big drop between 62.5 and 70 hz, at or more than 10 db considering bands on either side.  I'm messing with the INuke software to try and level that drop but am still learning about Q effects, filters, room modes, etc.  Anyway, if I had the budget I would probably try an HO 12, 10, or even an 8, to boost that hole and blend it with the UMAX 15.  I don't see where using different subs to achieve different bandwidths is a negative.  It's all in the setup, and ultimately boils down to the listener.

This will give you a glimpse of what they will look like. The bases; one with a coat of Liberon Finishing Oil and one without. Bubinga does have a red tint to it.

The one on the left, I don't know if it's Bubinga, or Liberon, or if they're the same but I like that look.  It really brings out the structure of the grain, looks almost 3D.  Very cool.

  17. I thought it was worthy of an opener to the forums.  No offense to Woffer, but I thought the whole thing was kind of funny.  Don't worry Woffer, the folks here can help you find what you need.  Is this too many successive words?

Thanks!  The wife and girls left for about an hour and I got to flex my new toys a bit.  Man, what did you guys talk me into..  I've tickled the second set of Peak limiter lights and man, the room is moving, literally.  Still working with the PEQ.  Took some measurements with my SPL meter, mic and software are next on my list, and am trying to smooth things a bit.  The flexibility of the DSP is awesome.  I don't know that I can stop messing with it though.

  19. Well folks, here's some pics of the finished UMAX 15.  It didn't come out quite as perfect as I'd hoped, but I think it's pretty darn nice for my first attempt.  I'd like to thank all that contributed.  I've got about 8 hours on it now using the NU3000DSP.  I really like the DSP feature, power is great for a single 15, the fan will need to be changed though.  I may have some questions regarding the DSP coming later.  Anyway, for those thinking of a DIY sub project.  Do it, it takes a little figuring out, but once you get there it's totally satisfying.

It's astonishing how so many of the prominent lead singers have passed from this era.  Out of my 4 favorite bands from the early 90's, only one is still alive...no pun intended.  Eddie Vedder.  It started with Kurt, then came Layne and Scott last year.  Now, Chris.  There were a few other guys back in the day that were unable to survive their wild youth.  It really surprises me about Chris.  Even though he battled some drug issues, he seemed like the most level-headed of the group.  I guess I won't get to see these guys in reunion tours 20 years from now like my parents have been able to enjoy so many acts from the 60's and 70's.

I said almost the same thing about 3 posts up.  Thanks for reminding me about Scott, absolutely one of my favorites, so that make 4 gone out of 5 favs for me.  Really sad thing is, I never got to see any of them in concert.

  21. That bums me out.  Guy had an awesome voice.  He was part of the quad of bands that I listened to a ton in high school.  Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana.  I still listen to them today.  All part of the Seattle 'grunge' movement back then.  Eddie Vedder is the only lead left out of the four bands.  Man, kind of makes me feel old.

Turn your sub amp on last and off first.  It shouldn't pop that way.

Noted.  Found that out with a couple of uninformed turning on/off devices.  When I wised up none of the above happened.
