Good choice, the onkyos get hot at eight ohms and get quite hot when driving lower impedance speakers. Going with external amplification will give the onkyo longer life.

Allright, let this be a lesson to all. I was so focused on what I thought was the correct solution and lost sight of seeking all possible culprits. Turns out through a lot of testing I realized that I was not hearing amplifier distortion, but instead am hearing distortion form the tweets and mids of the KLFs that I just purchased locally. I compared them to one of my original KLF's and I hear no distortion in it, only the ones I acquired recently. So I will instead focus my efforts on first getting some new titanium tweet diaphragms from Crites, and titanium mid diaphragms from Klipsch. I will let you all know how things sound after the repairs. I apologize to Dayton Audio for dragging their name through the mud in my brief but maddening quest for a solution to the distortion.

Marantz mono blocks are hard to beat, bench tested they do just over 350 Watts into 8 ohms. I've owned some, awesome little power houses!

Looks like we have a winner, I'll be picking up 2 qsc gx3 amplifiers. I found that a simple 50 ohm resistor makes the fan silent. So I figure that I'll power the tuba with the extra channel I'll have, and sell my fan modded behringer 2500 that has been powering the tuba along with 2 of the Dayton amplifiers I'll end up not spending much at all.

A little background on where I have come from in my home theater amplification. I had marantz MA-700 monoblocks for my front three (KLF-30's) I had to sell them to help with funds for our house. I found some Dayton APA-150 amplifiers that seemed to be a great match with what I needed. Then I heard it a couple nights ago, and confirmed it today when cleaning up the house and cranking some tunes...distortion. I tested different sources as well, I checked gain settings, the Dayton monoblocks were giving up at high volumes/demanding playback. The marantz monoblocks didn't give up at high volumes, but it always bothered me that they had no way to cool themselves down during lengthy use. So I reluctantly start my quest for a monoblock that meets my criteria, or a 3 channel amplifier. My criteria
1.Must have a cooling fan. I'd prefer one that cools when needed instead of just being on all the time. I buy my gear to last for the long haul, I don't need components heating up without the ability to cool down.
2.Must be able to do ~300 watts into 8ohms (if it is a 3 channel amplifier then 300 watts into 8 ohms X3)
As far as price, well lets see if we can keep it close to $700 with either 3 monoblocks or One 3 channel amp.
I am excited to see what suggestions are thrown around, thanks guys!

Purely depends on the quality of your DAC's in the player vs. the receiver. Not a huge debate in my opinion. Case by case basis.

I right now just have a spare 42" LCD in the mix, I have a 52" that is being used to stage a house with that will be replacing the 42 once the house sells. I don't have room to do a 5.1 in all KLF-30s or else I would keep the extra I have. Instead I have RSX-5's to complete a 7.1 that I will be mounting once we expand the living room, I know that it sounds like an odd match to put the RSX-5s in with the KLF's but they do quite well with blending in and are a dream to mount on the wall and have some pretty good sensitivity. The next upgrades will be to make the mids and the tweets in the KLF's all Titanium, then the crossovers, then.... pure enjoyment. [

Worth it to use the 30 as a center or to spread then apart?if it has a quality 3 way sound, not necessarily like the heritage, but a good "extra" sound because of the midrange, i think it would make it all the more worth it.
The front stage will be spread out once the room us enlarged since the tuba will be behind the couch then instead of taking up room in the front stage.

Well Christmas came early, I saw a set of KLF-30's on Craigslist, mentioned it to the Treasurer (Wife) and I purchased them. I now have 3 KLF-30's as my front stage in my temporary home theater. I say temporary because we'll be tearing down the wall that the TV hangs on to expand the room by almost double. As you can see I have some before and after pics. The wife has been so kind as to giving me some of our extra funds because she knows just how much this hobby means to me.
As for how this sounds...Wow. It is amazing how seamless the front stage now is, so impactful!!! Gonna keep putting the new front stage through some tough blurays and see what happens. (Shameful plug) I have my extra KLF-30 available in the Garage section for anyone else that wants to do this, as well as the center channel KLF-C7.

Why not get fewer 18's and get some bass shakers, properly installed and dialed in they can be a better addition than more subs and at a fraction of the cost.
Sub I also hear noise in my xpa-5. And when I called emo after I first got it last year they treated me kind of bad about it. They blamed my speakers and told me its normal. I had hiss and static sound that is not normal that I was describing to them and they just made me feel like I was wasting their time. I was set on returning it but I fixed the problem by running the power to a separate wall outlet. There is still a good amount of hiss but its a clean hiss now and Im happy (they are very picky amps).
Honesty even emo says its there so when people say they dont have any noise at all from there emo amps I just wonder what they consider noise. To me its anything thats not dead silent.
Heres the thing though. I paid 707 new to my door for a 60lb 5 channel 200 watt amp. And you have to be honest with yourself and say if its too good be true it probably is. Just like the problems they have with the umc-1 bugs. I think they cheap out on some stuff to give a performing product at a great price and hope we all look the other way at their imperfections.
Im with you though I would have paid 200 more for a dead silent amp.
Also you might want to try the crossover mod on your 7s (dean mod). I have read they have a more refined sound then factory (factory some describe as little harsh). The new 7s imo have a very laid back refined smooth sound with the lower crossover.
You know, i felt the same way when i first called them on it. My take on it was that i shouldnt have any noise and they said it was klipsch and they are revealing and thats why i had it sent in and tested and it tested out fine. If you dont mind the noise its a great bang for the buck amplifier, if the noise bothers you, its worth extra money to get dead silence. I plugged in my rotel rx 1052 last night and tested the 7's and it was dead silent, even the tweeter and we all know that the tweeter can be known for displaying a staticy noise depending on the power supply. I was so excited to hear dead silence but alas, i still have the xpa-5 up and running and its treating me well.
my current power conditioner is an APC H15 http://www.hometheatersound.com/equipment/apc_h15.htm I got it for 50 bux. The person i bought it from got some rf-83's an rc-64 an rw-10 and this power conditioner from her ex and she sold the 83's and i saw the sub and center and they were beat to hell soi can only imagine what the poor towers looked like. So far i have been very satified with it and i have had it for about 6 months or so.
Part of the reason i want several 18's is to enable myself that low reach i want and to really have that rumble as you said, like when a train goes by, i want to be "in the train". The kick in the chest i suppose i am looking for is like that bass you get from a giant dj sub and your hair moves type punch. I suppose, that well yeah, i dont sit at home and have things cranked that high ever consistantly. I suppose to get what you are saying with midbass and yadda, well, i seek the holy grail of acoustical perfection HA, yeah right....perfection, well, i can try.
My ex or now my kinda gf again accepts my hobby and loves movies as she used to work at a theater when she was younger and appreciates the hobby but sometimes, well, all the time has trouble justifying cost for it all. Granted, i have been through like 22 differents types of klipsch speakers in the last 2 years so i guess it boarders on obsessive and speakers going in and out but in the end its my chosen happy hobby! If a woman told me the audio or me, i would break down and cry and talk her into letting me keep the speakers or i will have nothing to enjoy in life as a hobby since this is my favorite. Well, if that happened i would make my lionel trains have a track throughout the whole house and if not that i would build model plains train and automobiles and place them all over and so on so forthe. I am a hobby nut!
I have been toting this old sony receiver around because of sentimental value and i had a hard time selling my old bose speakers since my mom bought them for me when i was 12-13ish and she has passed away. I held those rf-5's near and dear to me and was heart breaking to let them go, i was upset for a while over it and now kicking myself.
On the dean g mod, i have been happy with the 7's otherwise but then again i could be blissfully ignorant as i dont know what the dean g mod sounds like.

Just got done watching the movie "Super 8" and gotta say WOW, I was quite impressed with the audio quality and dynamics. They did such a great job with the LFE channel, not making it too lively thorughout but instead EXTREMELY dynamic at just the right points. My KLF-30's were really cranking and I am glad that I have them and not a set of weak speakers because I am pretty sure that I would have smoked a lesser pair of speakers in many of the explosions in this movie. My Tuba HT was pounding so hard that I thought my living room would come apart! If you want to have a treat for your home theater rent or buy this one and crank it, but FIRST make sure you have the headroom. [

Save some time, money, and aggravation and just put some bass shakers in the couches to work in conjunction with your subs. You'd be surprised just how easy it is to then dial in the exact tactile feel you are looking for.

I'm interested in some opinions from those that have heard both. Though for me, I think I'll be updating crossovers and diaphragms on my klf-30's to make them extremely hard to beat.

As some of you already know from the Garage section I have had to consolidate some of my home theater equipment. I made some required audio gear sales, and the wife/financial officer is appeased. The compromise was that if I sold some of my equipment that afterwords I could do whatever I wanted with the remaining gear and could buy/sell as long as the hobby was self sustaining. Which brings me to where I am currently. I have a set of KG 5.2 speakers in excellent condition which I was going to have for an awesome basement 2.1 theater. Now I have a line on some black Heresy II's that may be had for around $300. I am being sent pictures so as of now I don't know exactly the year they were made, though the owner states that they have a black textured finish? I just wanted to get the consensus on whether the heresys would be a more dynamic speaker than the KG 5.2's. I could buy the heresy's and sell the Klipsch 5.2's and come out virtually a wash. Good idea?

I see 3.5's going for $100 or less on craigslist every now and then. For the price you quoted I would expect 4.5's or even 5.2's which have tractrix horns and would be worth it.
Right now, I have a 5.1 setup. Three KG2.5 for the front and a pair of KG1.5 for the rears, all in light oak. I have a chance at (what looks to be) a nice set of KG3.5 towers also in light oak for about $180. I'm guessing I'll have about $280 after you figure in shipping.
What do you all think? Are they worth considering? I originally thought of going with another set of 2.5s or 1.5 to expand to 7.1, but the 3.5 have me thinking, so I thought I would ask for some opinions before I jumped.

I've been seeing 5.2's going for about 200, and I sold a pair of 3.5's for $110, from what I've been seeing in Kansas city before I just moved back to the twin cities is that the kg line just isn't commanding the big bucks like it used to.

Judging from a recent subwoofer comparison on avs forum the f-20 scored pretty low in comparison to other subs. I've not listened to one personally, I do love my tht.

I found the answer was quite obvious when I built my THT. I decided to ignore the break in recommendations and just build it. I then calibrated the home theater and called it done, only to find that I kept having to recalibrate the sub gain over and over again because the sub kept getting louder as the suspension continued to break in. So quite simply put, in my experience it is a necessity if you want to be able to calibrate your system immediately upon completing your build, otherwise you will have to continue to calibrate once your subwoofer slowly/naturally breaks in.
I'm considering building a Sub Woofer and have noticed that some people run their sub woofers out of the box for extended periods to break them in.
I would have thought this would break the speaker rather than break it in.
What do you think?

I've used 3 used marantz ma-700 amps for going on 2 years now and absolutely love them. I simply have them plugged into my APC power center which powers them up automatically when I turn my receiver on. They are modestly rated which is always nice, I had mine bench tested at pushing about 360 watts into an 8 ohm load. I had to search high and low to get the user manual, all the other "manuals" were just the advertisement that stated the specs for the MA500 and MA700 but didn't talk about any of the set up configurations, and features.
