  1. Well, I decided not to mess with Klipsch's KG4 design. Instead I just recently bought some the parts from a pair of KG3.2s. The KG3.2s don't require as much airspace (cabinet volume) so their yet-to-be-built-boxes should fit much better in my built-in bookshelves. BUT my reason for posting: I'm trying to determine if Klipsch's published specs for the KG4 (I posted them eariler in this thread) are the dimensions for just the box. Specifically, does that figure they give for depth include the speaker grills? If so, could someone tell me the depth of a KG4 without the speaker grill? I plan to use my KG4 parts to build a pair of towers. This time I plan to retain the use of the passive radiators, but I plan to mount them on the side of the speaker enclosures instead of the back. This way I can keep the speaker more slender and make them taller instead. When this project finally becomes reality I will surely post some pictures and details. It's been a long time coming, but I feel it's finally getting close to happening!
  2. Thanks NOS440!! With those measurements, I calculated those enclosures are tuned to 33-35hz. That's what I was after...

My recoton unit works fine with my remote 14ft away from the IR rec'r (which is the RF tranmitter) unit. I don't think you'll find much difference between the recoton and powermid units.
  4. I have one set of "powermids" now but I also wanted a hardwired system. I looked at Xantech and others, but was totally taken-back by the outragous pricing!! Being that I have a BS in EE, I decided to build my own unit for a fraction of their cost. I hope to get it done sometime in the next few weeks. BTW, you can get IR emitters (very similar to Xantechs) for like $1.50 each from www.allelectronics.com.
  5. Also, could you give the measurements of the cabinet NOT including the feet or the grill. I know the Klipsch site lists the dimensions as 35" x 8" x 13.6". I suspect the height includes the feet and the depth includes the grill in those measurements -- but I need the measurements of just the enclosure itself. I need this to determine the airspace (or volume) of the box. Then along with the measurements of the port(s), that I asked for above, I can determine the frequency at which the port(s) are tuned. That's ultimately what I'm after (just in case you are wondering)! This message has been edited by STL on 12-20-2001 at 01:23 PM
  6. The KG4.2, KG4.5, KG5.2, and KG5.5 all used the same tweeter so they should all have a very similar sound. Try looking on eBay. If you patient you should be able to get a pair for $400 or less. The KG4 also are a good speaker, and I've seen a couple sets on eBay lately. They use a different horn, but they should be somewhat similar to the 4.2s you used to have.

Each speaker has a 15" woofer, a mid-horn and a hi-horn. They can really create some SPL! This message has been edited by STL on 12-19-2001 at 06:41 PM
  8. quote: Originally posted by BobG: Speakers HATE amp clipping. It is what kills the majority of damaged speakers. That is EXACTLY right -- although it's amazing how many people don't know that! It is not easy to "blow" a quality speaker/driver with CLEAN power (unless you are pushing some ungodly wattage).
  9. quote: Originally posted by BobG: The RF-5 crossovers will not be a match for the RF-3 system. The internal volume of an RF-3 is 3696 cubic inches. The internal volume of an RF-5 is 3994 cubic inches. This calculation ignores the gross external measurements which include the grille, the feet and the space taken by the 3/4" cabinet material. Speaking of internal volume...could you tell me the internal volume of a SF-2? Thanks...
  10. Okay now people...I'm going to surprise myself and stick up for Klipsch. Klipsch is producing a fine product (or at lest my KGs and KLFs are) and last time I checked we were a free, capitalistic country -- so they can charge whatever they want. From a business sense, they have to set their prices low enough to keep the sales figures good and high enough to make a profit (else why are they in business). This means their speakers are going to cost more than just totaling up the speaker drivers & parts -- you have to factor their R&D in there as well as salaries of all their workers and management. If you don't like Klipsch pricing them don't buy their product...it's that simple. Any comparisions between Klipsch and Bose are TOTALLY off base in my opinion!!! Bose is 99% marketing with little substance. Klipsch is mostly substance -- albeit I see the company changing some putting more emphasis on marketing (at the expense of substance?) than they used to...but that's going to happen as a company grows. The only constant is change...
  11. I need you to measure the length of and the inside diameter of the port (or ports?) on one of your SF-2s. I need you to be fairly precise if you can (measuring to the closest 1/32" or better if you can). Thanks in advance!! This message has been edited by STL on 12-18-2001 at 10:45 PM
  12. Big K, I must admit that I planted that seed (see sgantt's msg). I am thinking you'd be better off selling that KV4 since it will be very hard to find main speakers (from the Epic Series) that match. Then I would suggest you use the new RF-line for your front three speakers (or try looking for used speakers in the KG-line or KLF-line). It is really most important that your front three speakes match. Beyond that, as long as you as using Klipsch speakers in the rear that a comprabable (not the small quintets, etc.) then you should be fine. 13. I've got a quick question for a SF-2 owner...
  14. Thanks for the input from both you guys. I suspected the sound produce would be fairly close, but I wanted someone "in the know" to confirm it. I plan to use the K-85-K horn from the KG4.2 along with four K-1075-SV 6.5" woofers to make a almost perfectly matched center channel speaker for my KG5.5s. We finally found someone to build our custom entertainment center for a reasonable price, so very soon I will have a place to put this monster center channel. I guess I better start building it soon! I will post pics when the unit is complete! I also bought all the drivers from a pair of used KG4s. I plan to build new enclosures for them making them fit in my built-in bookshelves in the back of my room. They will be my surrounds. I'm torn between making the boxes in a "WDST" design or just making a regular enclosure. I'm also considering mounting the horns perpendicular to the original mounting so these surround speakers will reflect more sound (off the ceiling and hardwood floors) around behind the listener.
  15. I bought some fans from www.allelectronics.com that have a thermistor built-in so these fans spin slower when the air temp isn't too hot. I'm having a custom entertainment center made so I haven't yet installed them but they should do the trick without producing too much noise. I also thought about the noise they might induce in the AC lines, but I have a 1800W Tripplite Line Conditioner and will have the fans on a separate isolated circuit.

  17. You need to checkout this thread: http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum4/HTML/002847.html The guy has a somewhat hard-to-find KV-4 (that would be the perfect center channel speaker for you) that he might be willing to sell.
  18. I did a little digging and figured out the KV4 is made to match the Epic Series (CF-1,2,3, or 4) and not the KG Series.
  19. Actually the KV4 does NOT match the KG5.5s. I think the Klipsch guys made a mistake on this new and improved website. I own a pair of KG5.5s and used to have a KV3. Long ago, I posted about replacing that center with a KV4 and BobG informed me that the KV4 was not a good match at all for my 5.5s (or anything in the KG series I believe) -- but I forgot just what speakers it was made to match. Maybe BobG can come to the rescue here again (and have someone fix their KV4 page). This message has been edited by STL on 12-16-2001 at 04:08 PM
  20. I also have KG5.5s. I found a lone KG4.2 to use as a center. The KG4.2 has the same tweeter (the K-85-K) as the KG5.5 so that makes it the best match. I had a KV-3 before I found the KG4.2; it did good, but I wanted the best possible match.
  21. I was hoping someone (maybe even Trey or BobG) might give me a better answer. Anyone...anyone...

Would it not be noble of a public servant to go home to their home state to run for office? Would Hillary have been able to win a senate seat in Ark? Well I am originally from Arkansas -- although I lived in the Memphis and St. Louis areas most recently. I have never supported Clinton -- not even when he ran for governor. Hillary would have lost Arkansas by a landslide! She had to pick and liberal state (and make some backdoor borderline-illegal promises) to win. This woman really scares me, but at the same time her crazy radical ideals should keep her from getting too far (I hope). I can concede that Clinton was (and is) an excellent politician, but he and most the people he surrounded himself with were just clueless about actually leading/running a government. Learn to live according to observable reality instead of slavish obedience to silly slogans. The beauty of living by slogans is that it relieves one of the necessity of thinking. I'm NOT just repeating a slogan. I've seen unions firsthand (as the company I work for employs both a union and non-union workforce at the same location)! I've seen how a union protect workers based on seniority and not based on the best/hardest worker. With a union, you only work long enough to go some decent seniority -- then you loose all motivation to work because seniority will protect you from being laid off. I've seen how the 'green' union guys work hard while the (highly over-paid) old farts do as little as they can. I've seen old guys get really mad at a young guy for working too hard and making them look bad. Funny, I think unions seem to live by slogans -- with only the union bosses doing any of the thinking (and therefore "telling" their members how and what to think). Unions, in some shape or form, do have a place in this great country of ours, but in their current state they are only hurting our country by promoting an unmotivated and inefficient workforce -- and that doesn't help us compete with other countries!
