  1. A few weeks ago one of the tweets on my CF3s stopped working. I contacted Bob Crites and he helped me determine that it was a bad crossover.

I shipped both X-overs to Bob.

Over the next few days I received 3 phone calls from his son Michael to keep me abreast of what was going on with them. It turns out that the CF3 XOs are fairly different from most of the other Klipsch units and required more work than normal. In short, I got a deal.

They went overboard in helping me by completely rebuilding both units, replacing all the caps, re-soldering all connections etc etc etc.

I wish that I had taken before and after pics to post as the rebuilt units are significantly beefier than the old. Where I know little about electronics, the pics would have made it obvious.

My speaks are back together and sound fantastic. My walls are shaking and my neighbors are frowning again. All is right in my little universe. As soon as I save a few bucks, I'll send them my Forte XOs as well.

THANK YOU BOB AND MICHAEL CRITES!

  2. I was hoping that Bob might be able to help. I'll try and contact him. Thanks for the tip.

As far as checking the continuity, is that as simple as using a digital VM to check the wires to the driver? I do plenty of electrical stuff on my boat, but know next to nothing about audio gear. What specifically should I check?? Is there a value or a value range I need to see or just current flow?

Thanks again for you advice. It would be great if I could repair this without dropping 300 bucks, but if that's what it takes I'll bite the bullet.

  3. Did I get your attention?

Well I finally did it. I blew one of my tweets. In my grief and self loathing, I am about to cap my own self.

I was chillin with a fat spliff (and a caucasian) this evening when it occurred to me that things weren't right in my universe. In fact they were horribly askew in the auditory department. I crept up to the right one with trepidation, angst, a cocked ear and a tight sphincter.....toast!

Is there a replacement tweeter readily available for an old CF3?? Absent the original equipment, is there something else I can install which will mimic what was installed by the folks in Hope? This really sucks!

    I've fallen and I can't get up.

  4. I have been jonesing for a pair of KLF30s for a while but I'm not having any local luck. I found a pair of KLF 10s which can be had for a good price. I've read a few favorable reviews, but I'd rather have the opinions of guys on this site. I may use them in an upstairs bedroom just for grins. They don't have the mid and appear to be very similar to my CF3's, just a bit smaller. The K site used to have the specs for all the older models, but they now lack the CF3 data, so it's tough to compare the innards directly.

    Any thoughts?? Thanks in advance.

    Respectfully submitted,

  5. This won't be of any help since it involves earbuds, but it works and others may benefit.

Buy a good pair of noise attenuators like those made by David Clark. Then use your earbuds underneath them. The Dave Clarks really do a great job of cutting down on noise, and are relatively cheap especially when compared to something active like the bose. Plus, they are beaters so you don't have to worry about them. I used to wear them when I did fiberglass work and they'd get beat to hell and take it.

Each year I use an electric buffer and renew the gel coat on my boat using this technique. I slip my ipod in my pocket and have at it. Takes the better part of two days and it really keeps the monotony and noise to a minimum.

The ear cups on the Clarks are big enough that perhaps you could whack the headband of a pair of inexpensive and small headphones. Then stuff them inside the hearing protectors ???

  6. I added a Phase 4000 Preamp to the mix and now it's MUCH worse. It's a heinous hum, no longer an offending rumble. So, I need to invest in a good surge protector and try the other stuff as well. Or, there is some heinous short/defect in the unit. The funny thing is, I have a terrible ground loop hum even with everything off. This noise was not evident with the Pioneer, only the background rumble on the one recording. So perhaps the unit is fubar and my vintage gear is vintage junk.

My pocketbook and my ears are having a serious disagreement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can always plug the old unit back in until I get this hammered out.

  7. I walked out of The Matrix. I can't stand Keanu Reeves. He did a chick flick with some gal that had terminal cancer....man that sucked also. My bimbo de jour was a big Reeves fan so I had to go. She had faIse teeth, a voracious appetite and extrordinary skill so I went. I also hated that sci-fi cop flick with Tom Cruise. Man does he suck! I liked Top Gun, The Color of Money with Paul Newman (he made the flick) and Rainman. After that, I think all of Tom Cruise movies suck. I think that pretty much any movie with Matthew McConnahey (sp???) will suck...he even managed to overplay and screw up "A Time to Kill". That stupid movie with Antonio Bandaras and his guitars and machine guns. How he managed to end up with Melanie Griffiths is a mystery to me. Roadhouse or whatever it was called with Patrick Swazie. With the exception of the hot blonde and Ben Gazara it was utterly worthless.

Of course my faves are rather bizarre so my judgement has a big honkin' asterisk next to it....

Big Lebowski - The Dude, Walter and Jackie Treehorn..."I'm gonna go find an ATM..."

Monty Python and the Holy Grail - What is your favorite color?

Raising Arizona - Son you got a pantie on your head!

No Country for Old Men - Coen brothers yet again

Monty Python at Hollywood Bowl - My brain hurts

The original - The Longest Yard - I hate covers

    Fast Times at Ridgemont High

North By Northwest - Cary Grant was a hoot during the auction scene and Eva Marie Saint had something going on back then.

Blazing Saddles - Anything with Slim Pickins

Dr Strangelove - Anything with Slim Pickins

The Getaway - Anything with Slim Pickins and Steve McQueen...The movie was so-so.....but SM and SP

Saving Private Ryan - I'll never watch the first 5 minutes again but the rest was first rate.

Forrrrrrrest Guuuuuuuuump - Once a year whether I need it or not....plus Jennie was hot and slutty in the Jump of the Balcony scene...plus freebird!

The Great Escape - What a cast....AND Steve McQueen

    Bullitt - See above

Dirty Dozen - Donald Southerland was a great spaz

Animal House - Donald Southerland was the prof I always wanted to smoke a joint with

I could keep going.....but I have veered off the thread. My apologies.

Did I mention that I hate Tom Cruise flicks??

  8. My brother:

    Pair of Chorus

    Academy Center

    Pair of KG4

    Pair of KG2 (I think)

    Nice Yammaha HT receiver.

    All for 500 bucks.

Now I'll admit that this has turned into an apples and orange comparison, but there are some SWEET deals out there for those willing to do the legwork and own a truck. You gotta love depreciation!

  9. I just passed on some KG4s for 100 bucks. No pics, but they claimed that they were oiled walnut and excellent. They would have gone nicely with my walnut Fortes. I wanted them, but just was too lazy to run over right that minute.....I had too much going on. Oh well....next month.

  10. Craigslist. I picked up some truly mint fortes for 400. Some 9 out of 10 CF3s for 220. My brother got a pair of mint Chorus, some KG 2 and a receiver for 500. This week there are a pair of Chorus for 350/offer here. Take your time and you'll get some great speaks for minimal bucks. If appearance isn't too important to ya.....then you can steal a pair.

  11. FNG here with another stupid Q....

Tonight after sucking down a few...(OK several) I decided to wail on the mothers. After running the gamut from The Who to Jimi to The Doors to Little Feat I settled into some classical....namely Nigel Kennedy and The Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto (My old man played Viola in the National Syphony (DC) for almost 40 years...he popped out of bed and turned on WGMS every day.....I awoke to classical from birth to about age 20. It's in my blood, my marrow, under my nails and between my toes).

Here's the rub, during the quiet passages I hear a "rumble" that I KNOW I wouldn't hear at the Kennedy Center or Carnegie Hall. The rumble is quite apparent at loud volumes (after all, what's the point??) so I assume it's there all the damn time. I heard this before on a fancy DVD/cd deck and decided to go with a dedicated CD unit. I assumed it was the deck....but no fix. IOW, on two different units I still hear this crap and it's annoying.

To be fair, I do not have a super dooper CD player, and I don't have this LP so I cannot troubleshoot using a third source.

My query to the experienced, gear head masses is.....WTF over??? Is this crap coming from the CD signal, the amp or another planet? Just how many U. S, Dollars do I need to donate to free my domo and my puny cerebellum from this awful racket?

Right now I am running an old Phase Linear 400 through an older Pioneer SA9100. Is my dinosaur rig the culprit? If I turn the volume down to more reasonable levels the rumble disappears, but so does my level of enjoyment. My ear drums are fairly external, and as such need to be punded back into that recesses of my cerebral cortex where they belong. And since I hate my neighbors, my level of satisfaction of ruining their evening is also diminished by my copping out and counterclockwise rotation of the big V knob.

Inquiring, ignorant, cash strapped, intoxicated, twisted minds want to know. Suggestions??

    ps......these speakers are a hoot!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. I stole a pair of CF3s last summer and could not be happier. I have heard many say that they are great rock speakers, but I must say that they make beautiful music in many other genres as well. I was listening to a Count Basie recording the other day and they damn sax player was IN MY ROOM. Linda Ronstadt on the Nelson Riddle ambums was IN MY ROOM. Ditto: Frank Sinatra, Little Feat, Tragicaly Hip, NRBQ, Jennifer Warnes, Snooky Pryor, The Who, Django, Wilson Pickett, Kings of Leon, Lyle Lovett, and Oh my gawd Steely Dan etc etc etc!

I bought an old high power amp to really crank them and it's just sick what they will do. I'm having a blast!

  13. Congrats on the nice speakers. Like you I wanted a pair forever, but I could never afford them. Once I finally got a pair used (cheap) I realized that I have wasted the last 30 years listening to lousy speakers, and that if amortized a great pair of Klipsch pays you back and then some. I am only sorry for the music that I have missed.

Be careful as they are like a bad crack habit!! Not a day goes by that I don't search for my next pair!
