  1. I'm glad I posted this thread... a lot of great suggestions. Does more than one person agree with any single player? Any particular brands have particular sound staging to be aware of?
  2. Thanks man. I will look into them. Probably good for another thread, but to utilize the DAC in the CD player and not the AVR, I simply use analog cables to the AVR from the CD player right?
  3. Sorry, I thought I posted it. Is it at all possible to find something with a better DAC and better than my BD player for 200 bucks or so? Used of course. My max would be about $500, but I would love to do half that, since I could do it fairly soon.
  4. I'm looking for a used CD player that would make more sense to connect to the Denon using analog cables since it would have a better DAC than what the Denon offers.
  5. I would imagine they have a little more UMMF! to them, but nothing incredibly drastic. I was thinking about a very wide speaker, as deep as the 20/30, but twice as wide, with twice as many woofers.
  6. After deciding to start building/or modifying an exsiting KLF 20 as a center channel, it got me thinking. I had read any article about SPL and subs and air moved, etc.etc. Has anyone built anything really out of the ordinary using KLF drivers? For instance...what would a speaker cabinet with 4 KLF 20 drivers sound like? After falling in love with the chest pounding tight bass that comes from the KLF series, can one increase the feeling by adding a quanity of drivers?
  7. Ugg. Ok..so I spent a few hours luggin the sub around the room, checking levels, testing cd's...and well...funny thing is I have come to the conclusion that I get the smoothest response and highest level with the sub WHERE I HAD IT. Sticking it half out of the closet next to the rack works best. This is good too, because it leaves me a HUGE area to upgrade to something monstrous.
  8. After more and more research, I am still thinking for MUSIC, it makes most sense to put it in the middle of the mains. For HT, perhaps a corner might be more efficient, but for a seemless sound, it makes more sense to have it smack dab in the middle of your main speakers.
  9. ah ha. So I was on to something by originally putting it there? I think I started getting swayed by the HT crowd. 2 channel takes priority over HT, however I'm guessing it won't hurt much having the sub there for movies.
  10. I ask advice for in the event I spend 2K on a new sub...it will sound ideal in the location that the room is built around. Right now the sub is in a 2 door closet, about 2-3 feet deep. The woofer pokes out from the doorless closet about 3 inches. Next to the sub is my sanus rack with all the components. It is VERY convienient to have this closet on the right wall corner, and the sub sounds best there...however, I want to make sure it wouldn't make more sense to put it in a corner wall, or against the viewing wall.
  11. I've been going over this in the HT forum, but I just started thinking again. I have a few places to put the sub and I'm not sure what is the best place. I understand crawling around the room and checking that way, but more specifically...I have a question when you are listening to music. I have found that most people that listen to music, listen with a sub...however, I could be wrong. But if you do, wouldn't it make more sense to put the sub in the middle of the 2 speakers to give an even and lively soundstage like the band is in front of you? I always find if I put the sub off to the side...the bass seems to seperate more. Any suggestions or comments about such a thing? I'm going over all this because it depends on what type of console I build for the tv. Thanks
  12. Ok. Thanks, I'm getting a better handle on this now. So tell me now what happens if I buy a CD player with an amazing DAC, but I use it before I buy a seperate amp. If it goes through the 2808, then which DAC does the signal get converted? Also in that case...since I will eventually be purchasing a seperate amp, what are some used CD players to look for that have really nice DACs?
  13. Perhaps to keep things simple for now, once I build the 20 into a center channel, I'll put the C7 in the middle back and keep it a 6.1 system.
  14. Since I will be modifying a KLF 20 to use a center channel (soon as I find a good deal for one) I will have a C7 with no where to go. I was thinking...since I wanted to add rear surrounds to my HT, what if I were to put the S2s into the rear surround department and find another C7 to use as side surrounds? Is this not an ideal speaker to be used as surrounds?
  15. I understand...but given today's technology, it seems like a downgrade to take a digital signal and turn it to analog no?
  16. Right now I have my surrounds about 2-3 feet above the ear and about 1 foot behind the ear on the side walls. I have been told if I had rear surrounds to go monopole, but the reviews are mixed. I'm using the S-2's where I mentioned. If I were to add rear surrounds, what is a good choice? And does it matter that they are going to be 4-5 feet above the ear? I don't have a choice since I have shelves which hold all my cd's and what not that go almost to the ceiling.
  17. The advice is great, keep it coming! So, with an older marantz like the one mentioned...digital connections to the cd player aren't even possible, so it's a trade off? Analog connections with older/better amps, than say, a digital connection from my denon AVR to a cd player?
  18. Do they make 2 channel amps that have digital outs? It seems like it would be a downgrade to loose the digital connection when listening to cds. However, I this is new to me, I always used an AVR and a cd player, but I would like to keep that strictly for HT now, and set up a strictly 2 channel stereo kit.
  19. haha i know this and have done this...but honestly...i just wanted someone to say...it's better one place than the other. in general, i have heard directly in center front of listening position is not the best place to put a sub...
  20. I really can't afford seperates just yet, but I was wondering. If you listen to cd's, what is the best way to go about it. Is hdmi a better digital connection? I listen through my bd player right now (hdmi through the denon). Is this just as good as say... getting a seperate amp and cd player with stereo cables?
  21. I am torn between putting the sub underneath the tv directly in the center of the mains or putting it to the right side of the room facing perpendicular to listening angles. I have the tv on a far wall and to the right of the tv is a closet (large 2 door)...I have my components in the closet and right now, the sub as well. Is this the best placement, or is it desired to have it in the center of the listening area? The closet has no doors and the sub is about 3 inches(speaker forward) poking out of the closet.
  22. Cool. I did notice I like it better standing verticle. I guess I'll make a table for the tv just high enough to fit it standing up. I didn't want the tv placed much higher than a 30" table, but I suppose 3-4 inches taller shouldn't effect viewing angles. That is a great idea to put the tweeter on top! I think I might look into some mdf and veneer in the future. Something about how it looks standing in between the KLF 20's that makes it look cool too. haha
  23. How many people have them placed vertically vs. horizontally? I'm building a console for my tv and the c7, but I'm undecided wether to have the speaker horizontal across the bottom of the tv, or stand it up on the floor.
  24. haha, why did that statement make me seem so wimpy [*-)] I have it in the middle right now and the room is so small that it didn't make a difference at all. I get more than enough low frequency. I have a couple more wires to run for the surrounds, and I still have to build the console to hold the tv, but it's coming along fast. I scored a slab of granite for the top of the table, so that was mighty swell.
  25. Hmm... The tv and sub power cables will be run with all the speaker wire...but also in that bunch of wires will be the LFE line from the receiver to the sub, and also the HDMI monitor out from the receiver to the tv. I'm not really worried because all the cable is heavily insulated.
