  1. If this has been covered before, I apologize.

Are DeanG modded RF-7s comparable to the Reference IV line? Finally got the RF-7s out of storage and in our new house. After three weeks of listening they are on the harsh side for my ears. The RF-82s allow me to enjoy music for as long as I like. I'd like the same experience with the 7s.

The mod's price is fine. Just would like some feedback before making the change.

  2. I'm out of my jurisdiction, but have read that the IIs have better bass than the Is. Also, you can upgrade the IIs so they perform like a Heresy III.

I'd get the IIs, given that their condition is decent.

Now members with more knowledge, please chime in.

  3. winchester21 "...Or sell both sets and buy some bigger heritageDevil"

thebes "There is really only one solution. Sell both and buy some Cornwalls. Trust me this is the right way to go."

+3. The Forte II has the Tractrix that you like, and very good low end. Here is a pair for sale in La Crosse (2 hours away from me). Older post but he may still have them.

  4. See what both sets sound like with other receivers/amps you have laying around. One pair might be less picky than the other. This may help (or complicate!) with who stays and who goes.

I agree with the others saying 'go with your gut'. Seems the KGs are winning........

  5. I've seen two 3-D movies in theaters so far this year. With both experiences, I had a nasty headache the rest of the day.

I don't think it's for me. When watching a movie (uninterrupted) I don't notice the world around me. I'm totally immersed in what's going on. Don't feel I need 3-D.

Here is a lengthy article about 3-D by Roger Ebert.

  6. Afterall, you could be elsewhere spending money and getting into trouble too?

This way you get to spend money and get in trouble at home. I speak from experience.

Excellent score Ironsave! Only advice from me is do not make any quick decisions. Listen for a while longer before keeping or selling. The value your speakers is solid. Think of Bob Marley's words "Every little thing is gonna be alright".

  7. i may be wrong, but a 3.1 doesn't exist. i don't think there is a receiver or processor out there that has that option. if there is, please let me know.

My receiver seems to allow it. Toggling the surrounds to 'none', the front L and R play the surround signal along with their usual duty. The surround effects seem to be quieter than when going through the dedicated surrounds. This is a Harman Kardon AVR525.

I only know this from using an incomplete HT system until we get into our new place.

  8. More FYI: It's an interesting place.....meaning unkept in appearance. He must not be too concerned with how the place looks. But, he's repaired three receiver units and they've been performing wonderfully.

My kinda place, actually. He probably knows exactly where everything is! Well, unless he's old like me...Stick out tongue

    Fini,

I was thinking the same thing. I bet he can walk around that place with his eyes close....

    James

That's exactly what my father is like with his garage/shop. Lots of clutter, but it's a "by the numbers" operation.

  9. .......I still want to take my receivers up there and get them looked over, just don't know when but I hope within the next 2 weeks. I will let you know so maybe we can meet up for dinner or something.

    James

You might consider shipping them to him. I shipped an NAD unit, he did the repairs, then I picked it up after a few weeks.

This would work if you are OK with not meeting him before giving over valuable gear. If you go this route, contact him first. You send it to his P.O. Box, then he picks up the package(s) at the local USPS. That way there are no packages sitting outside his "STEREO REPAIR" store front.

If our schedules mesh, lunch or dinner would be great.

  10. I have to add......walking outside and hearing those Klipsch pounding away was way cool

Way to put that revived 730 to work for you.

    James

Good memory, James. Bringing gear back to life is so satisfying.

I wasn't sure if the volume would be loud enough for a dance floor, and almost brought a bigger amp for the HK's preouts. Shouldn't have doubted the 730 for a second.

Yesterday I got a nice email from the bride, who left with her man early:

"I seriously can't thank you enough. I've had pretty much every one of my cousins tell me about the awesome dance party we missed once Lyle started DJing. It was the highlight of the day for many of them - especially since it was the first time Rita's kids were all together for 2 years. It was the perfect, joyous reunion for their family. Thank you, thank you, thank you."

    Music is the answer!

  11. How 'bout a temporary two channel system for a wedding reception. This was in a really long barn. No kidding, there were cows being milked the floor below us.

After the Cork n' Bottle String Band finished somewhere around 10 pm I was on for a few hours, mostly playing wedding standards. Used Heresy Is and Forte IIs with a Harman Kardon 730 and a Rio Karma MP3 player. The Rio plays .flac lossless format and it sounded great.
