  1. Mark is mostly right but there are exceptions of course.

Radford and Leak amps from the 50's-60's are not overly romantic. The Marantz 8B and Mac 240 are not either.

Most late 70's and early 80's amps from ARC and C-J don't sound too different than the ones from the 50's which they are based upon. ARC started the business by modifying Dynacos and copying and trying to improve the design of most vintage 12ax7 based preamps (Marantz, Dyna etc). To my ears, they sound worse than the originals.

Many of the modern tube gear sound like solid state to me and cost too much so why bother anyway.

For first tube setup, I'd recommend something not too expensive with upgrade potential like the Dyna pre/power or Scott integrated amps and leave the expensive stuff for collectors or to someone with more experience.

  2. I've got the Sony 227esd and it's a great player. Sounds very nice and the build quality and parts are top class.

I also have a Revox B226 which sounds a little smoother. Both are top class players.

I really like the sound of the tda1541.

Check out this site http://www.lampizator.eu/LAMPIZATOR/REFERENCES/references.html . This crazy guy is adding tubes at the output of these players. I plan to follow his instructions and mod my 227 esd soon.

  3. Joe,

I had the Gemini PF with cobalt transformers. It was the best amp I've ever owned. Fast, transparent and reproduces piano notes like no amp ever did before ( the Marantz 2 and 5's were in the same class ).

The Lightning 45 should be similar. The cobalt transformers are a must. With stock transformers the sound is very good but not exceptional.

  4. I don't know the Django but a couple of days ago I received a Music First Audio TVC preamp for and audition (same S&B transformers) and it didn't do it for me.

Although, main system speakers a insensitive BBC LS3/5A, The sound wasn't too dynamic enough for me. However, it did sound very smooth, evenly balanced and pleasant. Tried it in a different system with Altec 19's and overall impression was quite the same.
