  1. OK no power till the caps are changed. Thanks for the link to the schematic. I downloaded the assembly manual just after I got the amp and read it a couple times to get a basic understanding of the parts and wiring. Looks like I’ll be buyin some caps and hoping my uncle has some spare time. Hanx, Jaymz
  2. Thanks for the help. I was afarid it might be a Cadmium deposit from what little I could find on the web. Was hoping there was a safe way to clean it (I have a 2 ½ year old son). As for changing the caps I’ll be asking to my uncle and cousin to help me with that as my soldering skills are sub-par. They’re both electricians and my uncle has lots of old tube gear (mainly radios). Hope he has a tube tester. Before I change the caps, should I power it up after I’ve checked all the tubes to make sure it works? Then I’ll have to figure out what brand of caps to use as I’ve seen many different types in the rebuilts I’ve looked at online. Learnig more everyday. Hanx again, Jaymz
  3. and a close up. You can see it on the Bass-Ball control
  4. Need some advice with a Heathkit W-5M that I bought from a friend for $50. He bought it at a garage sale years ago and it’s been sitting in his basement ever since. Unfortunatly one of the Mullard sheild logo ECC82/12AU7’s is missing. So I figured while I look for a balanced match the first thing is check out the workmanship, hope for the best and clean out all the dust and dirt. I’m a newbie when it comes to tube gear. Only other tube stuff is a Wollensak Reel2Reel. When I removed the bottom cover plate it looked a lot nicer than I expected…but I noticed a pale yellow, almost flouresent powder on some of the nuts on the power transformer (54-32), the insulation on the transformer wires and mostly on the bottom of the Bass-Bal control. Has anyone seen this before? Oxidation, mould or what. Didn’t want to start brushing or spraying anything till I get some advice, just in case the powder’s a health issue, or I blow up this beauty little amp using the wrong cleaners. Hanx for any input, Jaymz Here’s a picture of what I’m talkin about. (hope I resized it propper)
  5. OK, so fan it is. A few questions.... - any suggestions on brand/manufacturer ? - are there cooling fans that can be hooked up to one of the DC triggers ? - I assume place the fan so it draws the hot air out and not blowing in Hanx and sorry for all the noob questions but I've been learnig ALOT from all the knowledgeable people on this site by asking them.
  6. Well I finally did it. Should have my new (referb) Marantz SR7001 by Oct. 8th [] (on a FedEx truck right now from Orlando !!!) While reading the manual it says to leave a minimum 8" from the top, back, and both sides. The top clearance is no probs but the back will be about 4" from the wall and the sides will only be 1/8" from the cabinet sides [] My question is should I get a cooling fan to be on the safe side or should I be fine. (It's a pine cabinet with glass door and the back removed and about 1/2" off the wall.)
  7. Totally agree with Bill H. you'd be MUCH happier with the sound quality of the S-3's compared to the Quintet III's. I was using Quintet III's for surround speakers for awhile but felt they didn't sound right with my F-2's and C-2. (had to turn the levels up +3 dB on the Quintets as well as set the crossover point at 120 kh on my receiver). Was going to get S-2's or S-3's to replace them but got a great deal on another pair of F-2's. Sounds much better now with F-2's (front L/R) C-2 (center) F-2's (surround L/R) and now my crossover is at 80 hz Also, this is in a smaller room than yours (11x18). Hope this helps.
  8. I was just looking at the manual for your reciver and it says that setting the speakers to SMALL will cross them over at 90 Hz. Lower than your speakers can handle but better than setting them to LARGE. so if you want to do it through the receiver and not throught the subs high level then I'd suggest setting MAIN SPEAKER to "SMALL", setting the LFE/BASS OUT to "SW" and turning the Sub-10 to 120 Hz. Although this still has the potential to dammage your speakers.
  9. Yeah that's probably my best bet right now. Here's the 2 I'm lookin at; Marantz SR-7001 $400 US (haven't heard back if they'll ship to Canada) Marantz SR-5500 $395 US (includes Shipping to Canada) http://ca.marantz.com/Products/316.asp# The SR5500 doesn't have HDMI but not using anything with HDMI yet. Still only 90wpc, but 90wpc Marantz vs. 90wpc Sony
  10. Picked up the F-2's yesterday. But now I'm wonderin if The F-3's would match up well with the C-2? Still Have one more day to get the F-3's at the sale price and now I'm not sure if I want to order them for fronts and return the F-2's, or should I just stick with the new F2's Also only have 90 wpc from my pitifull little Sony (STR-DE598) Any suggestions ?? [*-)] (Man upgradeitis sucks!!)
  11. Thats one of my Mains I moved from the front. Didn't think I'd have the room to do it but they do fit, but they were too low 'cause of how high the couch is, then I remembered I had some end tables down stairs so I thought I'd try something to see if it would work and it looks like it will. Wasn't sure if the wife would like it but when she came home and saw what I'd done she did!!! [] So looks like I'll pick up another pair of F-2's Oh man I'm SOOOOOOOOOOO tempted. Thought about it more than once today but money's too tight, I'm spendin' some of the money I was savin' for a new TV. Plus with the broken wrist sick pay's gonna be kinda slim. []
  12. Hanx for the link Wuzzer. I talked to the wife this morrning and mentioned something I thought would peak the WAF meter into the red zone... " if I were to get another pair of F-2's on sale for side surrounds it would cost 30 bucks LESS than ordering the S-2's online" Well she likes that idea BETTER than the S-2's!!! [] The main reason is she doesn't want the left side surround on the wall above the picture frame 'cause one horn would be firing up the stairs at our 13 month olds room. So hopefully I'll be going to Best Buy tonight. Great sale going on till Thursday F-2 $399/pair, F-3 $499/pair, Sub-12 $299/ea. So I moved one of my F-2's to where it'll be for the left surround. The only problem I can see is it's not an optimal position for the LS surround, a little further forward than I'd like as you can see in the pictures I'm attaching. Hanx again. Jaymz
  13. Would the RS-10’s sound alright with the Synergy F2 mains and C2 center? The reason I ask is that the only authorized dealer around here (Hamilton, Ontario) that carries Synergy is Best Buy and they only carry the S-1 and Icon VS-14. Not what I’m looking for, frequency response too high (95hz) and sensetivity too low (88 dB). The closest reference series spec wise to the S-2’s would be the RS-10 (82 Hz, 91 dB) Just wondering since the Reference series has Titanium tweeters and Cerametalic woofers compared to the Aluminum and IMG of synergy Hanx, Jaymz
  14. Well yesterday I was tweaking my system and thought I heard some distortion from one of my Quintets (Right surround 7' high) so instead of getting the step stool I thought "hey the couch is pretty close, I'll just stand on the arm and lean over" Well...bad idea. Lost my balance, came down HARD on my left arm. Broke my wrist in 2 places. Goin' under the knife tommorow to get pins in my wrist. [8o|] The Doc says I'll be out of commision for 8 WEEKS!! Looks like we won't be getting' the new TV anytime soon. What a bonehead I am. [8-)] BTW.... It was a picture frame rattlin' not distortion.
