  1. I picked up a beater pair of La Scala's (and a set of vertical Cornwalls as a project). I've read a lot of postings on La Scala's and was wondering if anyone had tried ALK's solution of a Crites CT-125 with a 4k crossover?

Also - what do people generally think of black La Scala's? There are a fair number of dings and chips in the corners that I want to clean up, but veneering the doghouse is probably more difficult a project than I want to tackle right now.

  2. I've started researching the same thing... First started with a set of Forte's and basic upgrades, now starting on a pair of cornwalls. I've heard a set of the older Altec vott's, so I'm probably leaning that way, but I'm curious about the 2" drivers and above (although they are probably out of my price range right now).

mid range horns generally increasing in price:

    PH-800 (crites)

altec 511b (811b with higher crossover)

    gothover fastrac

    alk trachorn 400

    JBL 2380A

    fc260

    Edgarhorn, 510/402 jubscala?

  3. I've heard both speakers in the past, but it's been a long time. I remember the kg3.2's lacking in bass.

The klf-20's are a 3-way speakers with a tweeter, midrange horn and two 10" drivers. The kg3.2's have a tweeter and an 8" driver with a 10" passive. I have a pair of kg5.5's which give much better bass than the 3.2's, but given the choice between them and the klf'20s - I'd pick the klf's.

  4. Looked up an older review and the input impedance is listed at 100k ohms.

I saw a couple of places where a 20:1 ratio was recommended for the amp/preamp impedances, so at 3.5k ohms in the Peach that's at 70k (and in the JM operation notes - HiZ recommended for >100k ohms). Is there a standard recommended ratio? Can you have too high of a ratio?

  5. Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice on a preamp. I have a Rotel that I *was* happy with, but now I suspect that it is the weak link in my system. Eventually I'd like to build a set of cornscalas using altec 511b's (I only have the horns right now), but that project won't start until fall. I'm looking for something equally good for both tube and ss amps, recommended for rock, blues, vocals, $900-$1500? If they were still being made - I'd save up and buy a Peach or Blueberry, so unless someone has one for sale - I'd love to hear your 2nd choice too.

Sources: various digital (ipod, cd, etc.) linked through ps audio dac

    preamp: rotel 1070

amp: mccormack dna-1 (a friend has a mod'd dynaco that he's going to let me borrow for a while to play with)

speakers: Klipsch Forte ii (BEC crossover and tweeter upgrades - thanks Bob!)

  6. Philip,

I'm a little confused by your post on the clocking in USB vs firewire. Aren't the data transfer rates of both formats high enough that it really doesn't matter if you're clocking or not? As long as you have no other devices on the chain - both firewire and USB can transfer maybe 10 cd's in the amount of time it would take to play one song?

I'm kind of stuck in that the amount of data being sent is so much smaller than the capacity of the interface (assuming you don't have too many devices on the line or too many neighbors causing packet loss on your wireless). Can you point me to an article that explains this in more detail?

    Thanks!

  7. Keep your eyes open on craigslist. I've seen kg5.5's go for $350 and a pair of smaller kg's go for $200? I recently bought a pair of Forte ii's for $250 (passives pushed in, veneer chipped, but they sound great with new domes/crossovers)
