  1. The phase switch seems like a bonehead thing but.... I know it is primarilly used to tailor your sub to your room, but what does it actually do. 3 questions 1.What does it do when you switch it from 0 to 180, I know it's to keep it in fase with the rest of your speakers so you don't cancel out but how does it do this? 2. If 180 fits the room best would it always be the best or would 0 suit different materials better (say 90 persent of cd's sound best at 0 10% sound better at 180 same for movies. also would movies sound better at 180 and music at 0 ? Stupid questions huh 3.If your running multiple subs in different locations could one sound best at 0 and the other at 180 just because of room placement or are you better off at setting them the same? I just got my ksw15 to go with my 12 and started to wonder about this, I just set mine to what sounded best and left it but was thinking that maybe I should put some more thought into it. I'm sorry if i'm insulting some of your intelligence but I learned at a along time ago to ask questions no matter how stupid if you don't know the CORRECT answers. Read alot about other stuff but the phase switch doesn't usually come up (maybe cause it's a no brainer?)and would just like some more knowledge on it. So if you guys know more than I do would like some info on it. This message has been edited by HTADDICT on 07-19-2001 at 11:14 PM
  2. My opinion on sony is that they make GREAT equipment, bang for the buck the ES receivers rock, so do the yammis and onkyo and blah blah blah, but sony makes every peice of gear you need, I get a feeling owning sony just like I do owning klipsch, my equipment has never broken down and I don't regret a scent I've spent. Don't look over the ES line without thinking to yourself, What other type of gear am I going to buy if your going to buy something to go with your receiver, it is nice to have matching components, that's where sony excells. Maybe I'm just stubborn but I love my sony. Makes it easier on the wifes eyes too when everything matches up. Sounds good with the rf-3's too.
  3. Even we here in ND don't know what this is all about, guess some people are REALLLY bored here when all you have to do is think about changing names. I'm gonna vote for this * -and we'll call it the state formerly known as northdakota. What is this crap all about? Anyway proud of the state even if theychange the name. I personally think they should call it cold as hell and if you can't take it stay out state. That would suit me just fine! Our state bird could be a frozen penguin corpse. and that same bird could be on our state flag being sodomized by old man winter, that should send a message Any way logic rf-3's and a ksw15, blow the lid off! (could still use more and biggersubs).
  4. Nothing wrong with the ksw 12 or 15, sure it's like a moped ride compared to 2x the expense of velodines. But I'd rather let my friends cath me riding a moped than a yamaha sub. Anyone else care to add to this?
  5. Love my reference sys. ksw12 & ksw15,. I have a sony da30 es receiver. Sony makes nice receivers too! I'm glad I spent the extra to get a little more. Best tweek I did is to add a 400 watt amp to my rf-3's. Like having two subs, the 15" is definently louder than the 12, but both are good. There's a lot of different people here running a lot of different systems and I'm sure they all sound good, as long as ya drop some chaching your gonna like it. Legends would be good, HMMM come to think of it, lascalas and klipschorns or the new reference line. Shooot, I need a second job..... Seriously though I bought the ref. line without ever hearing them or ever seeing them for that matter, and never even considered room acoustics, and they sound great, ther's alot of people here running rf-3's, but I secretly envy those with the legends.....p.s. get the biggest sub ya can get your hands on if you can afford it definently wait for the new klipsch subs!!! If I had to do it all over again I definently would get the ksw15 and skipped the 12 alltogether. And even now I wish I had a vel hgs, sunfire or svs. As for receivers, I'll pass on advice cause I'm partial to sony I have 0 complaints and nothing but recommendations, but there's also alot of people running yammi's on here wich may or may not be better. All in taste if you ask me. Have fun and let us hear what you decide on.
  6. WELL, first you take a noose, tie it around your neck, put the rope over a rafter, tie it short, then jump off of a chair and enjoy the silence. Whoops, read that wrong, I though he wanted advice on how to hang HIMSELF because he had bose 901's, my bad.
  7. Wouldn't want to tell ya what I'd pay for them because I'm a bargain hunter to begin with, but usually what I do when I'm faced with trying to sell something is get an idea in my head of what I would LIKE to get for them, (remember you can get pioneer 3 way 12's for 200 brand new at sears) but that doesn't mean you can't get 150 out of yours or swap for something that would cost you 150 to buy. I personally would not buy them, but that doesn't mean there aren't some kids out there who are looking for something to buy or swap. (I'm saying 150 because I'm assuming you would want to get somewhat close to what it would cost you to buy a decent sub) And if ya get to know some local stereoshop guys, I'll bet ya could get a sweet deal on a sub. Look in the back of sound and vision there are a lot of companies out of new jersey, some pretty reputable. I've used a couple different companies out of there and had good results and saved a BUNDLE.
  8. Boa, once again thank you, your idea about the cables was half on, but not where you expected, you got me thinking so I went back and checked, behind the tv my wires had fallen!! lifted them little buggers up about 2 inches, noise gone. Simple logic is always a good place to start, in my excitement to get it hooked up before the wife seen I bought a new toy I negleted to "clean up" my connections, didn't even realize it. Tomorrow HOUSECLEANING. Usually I keep a pretty clean wire mess behind my stuff, just one of those occations where cleansliness is next to godliness. thanks again boa
  9. The only thing that is hooked into my tv is an s-video cable and nothing out of the tv.
  10. Radioshack sells those crossovers also the same cylinder things you were looking at and they could give you one to do what you want. (but belive me it's not that simple) But I do think that there are very affordable subwoofers out there that would satisfy your needs much better than trying to build one out of your fishers yet there is an old saying that half the fun is getting there, so why not. BUT you could sell them speakers to someone and be closer to getting an actual sub. Check the pawnshops ebay whatever it takes to get one because these were built to perform to the max, and trying to build one wellllll, different strokes for different folks i guess. Wasn't there a crossover in them speakers? My guess is there more than likely is, if it is a 2 or 3 way speaker there definently has to be (again not that this will really help anyway, but it is what you are talking aboutright?) you will have to get a different setup anyway but if there is a crossover in there it does limit freq responses as to whatever they are rated for, hope I helped a little but there are guys on here way more versed on this stuff than me, like boa there, you may not be able to drop the change for a huge vel like his, but that's why they make subs of all sizes, again different strokes, hope I helped a little.
  11. Thanks horned for the insightfull reply from a guy who's been there. As for a 12 step program there is one but it's 12 steps in the wrong direction, this stuff just gets more addicting. I got my handle from my wife, who after asking what I paid for my klipsch speakers replied, with a blank shocked look.....my god you have an addiction!! hence the name HTADDICT, home theater addiction is not something you can cure, maybe if your stuck in a room listening to the backstreet boys on a bose system for about 2 weeks, you might be cured, but this procedure has yet to be tested on humans. Multiple sub arrays are definetly coming up, still trying to work out a plan in my head, still jockeying ideas back and forth, but I just bought my house and big ticket items are out of the question, so I say bring on the ksw, I could sure benefit from reading into some of the older replies on these topics though, I admit I am pretty green when it comes to identifying placements and setting crossovers and etc.etc. WIsh there was a tell all book on the subject. Always look forward to reading your replies horned, wish I had a 93 year old mother to try my subs out on, SAY you should have her watch the opening scene to outbreak, tell her it's a nature show, crank it up halfway...It starts out with cute little bird sounds and ends up in mortarfire, that should get the old stimuli going. Anyway thanks
  12. Thanks Horned, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has discoverd this,I don't know when I'll find the time to play around with it to fix the problem, maybe this next week, wife is going to the inlaws with the kids!! She said that she wants all the windows in tact when she gets back though. So I'll be bachin it for the week, finally get to play with the stereo. I read your other reply too thanks again. Would really like to get rid of this crackle though, how do you think I could insulate the amp? Why does my tv do this and nothing else? Would this still happen if i got a different amp? Now that I've finally gotten one I have been bitten by the bug and I'm ready to fully amp my system (with a better amp though) are kenwoods junk? well I've asked enough questions hopefully you or other hometheateraholics out ther will be able to answer a few of them.
  13. Hooked my kenwood amp up to my rf3's works good, but when I turn on my sony tv there is a very audible hissing crackling sound. Doesn't do it when I switch on anything else. My amp is about 14" above my tv and my amp is plugged into the back of my sony receiver. Why does this happen and how do I fix it? Do I have to just move my amp further away? That really isn't a favorable option. Any help out there, looking for some wisdom, also had questions on what to do with this amp in my post 2 amp or not. Thanks.
  14. Thanks... I looked into getting into some better subs but bang for the buck says I have to go with the klipsch 15 I can get a good deal on one. Probably will put the 15 up front and the 12 in the rear. will be easier on the wifes eyes. Should have it in a couple weeks. Thanks again.
  15. Impulse shopped today, bought a kenwood (ugh) amplifier, 200 x 200. Lots of bad ideas running through my head with this..... amp the rf3's, amp just the subs on the rf3's? (can I do that and then run receiver power to the tweets?) Buy another pair of speakers to thrash on? Build a raised platform in my home theater room and run subs underneath my floor and use the kenwood to drive them?.........or make it into a beer coaster. I only paid 120.00 for it but it's in really good shape. Can't afford much for an amp, so until I win the lottery, this will probably be all I have. I'm running my sony da30 es receiver to my klipsch reference line speakers. 90% for home theater use, ksw12 and soon to come ksw15. Sony has 80 watts per channel, 2 amp or not 2 amp that is the question. ME thinks the wife doth protest 2 much!
  16. What I plan to do next has allready been done, I bought a house to go along with my home theater system, 2700 square feet split level home, home theater room redonein 1999, wet bar, gas fireplace, jucuzzi tub, house completely wired for sattalite. Livin the good life!! it's all about movin on up... my neighbors are george and wheezy.
  17. My favorite part about reading replies is when people put a website link down for reference. I don't get too much time to play on the computer and when i do I'm only looking at home thater stuff anyway. But I don't get time to just surf and find other interesting things. Thought it would be great if people could post other websites they have found interesting home theater related, in one spot (here) then we could all see them without searching through garbage and wasteing our precious time. Doesn't matter what it is: places that give reviews, places that sell, personal sites, auctions, etc.. Hope ya can help out.
  18. I like my sony ES three reasons why::: 1. great bang for buck maybe not the highest end receivers, but deffinently in the upper mid and affordable. 2. Sony makes everything under the sun, Great computers, car stereos, tv's, VCRs, play station 2, minidiscs, every peice of a/v gear in a hometheater made by sony integrates together, no setting up different componetnts to try to match. That's how I started out and hated it. 3. My theater system is all sony and has been for about 6 years now, and not one problem! (and I've got alot of stuff)Have tried to get ahold of sony though and I must admit that's a pain in the rear Sure there are better receivers out there but how many companies can say they make everything else to go with it. and at normal listening levels you'd be pretty darn good to tell the difference between any two receivers except maybe in a home theater setup. I've got the klipsch reference line and love them with my little sony da30 es receiver (under 1000) I know it's not one you listed but thought I'd ask why not?

  20. I was thinking more about this last night, and I think absolutely anybody can do this with perfect results anytime. The trick is the right products, what I recommend would be fusor, it's an automtoive bonding agent, works on wood, fiberglass, metal, paint whatever. I've used this stuff on many cars, I work on everything from motorhomes to exotics. I used fusor on a widebody kit on an eclipse drag car, fast dry time and excellent tensile strength. It's about 30 dollars a tube. (One would do at least 2 rf3's) But you do have to have an applicator gun. Trust me this stuff will work 100 times better than any oldtimers stupid wood glue would. once it's on it aint ever coming offf period! I realize there's alot of questions that goes along with how to do this, and alot of people would like to. This way is cheaper than takeing it to someone, and I think even an average person would have better results than a veneering shop. If you still want to do this reply and I'll explain more (trust me it works and it's easy)
  21. Thanks, nice to know somebody out there has one, was beginning to be a mystery for me. I Like to keep all of my things matching, for me it's sony and Klipsch, but that sunfire sub does tempt me, glad klipsch is coming out with the new line. I'll post what I got one time her(I LIKE MATCHING COMPONENTS) Sony da30es receiver, Sony a55 DD sat Sony mdp-405gx LD, Sony dual tape, Sony 5 disc carousel, Sony slv-798 hifi vcr Sony 7 band eq, minidisc player & portable Sony 32 inch trinitron tv, sony playstation2 SIMA SVS4 VIDEO SWITCHER (great little piece) Klipsch reference line with ksw12 soon to add another klipsch sub
  22. insane answer of the month! Why not 36 grit them, 3mpanel bond sheet metal to the sides and automotive paint them. HMMMM, chameleon rf3's, plum crazy purple klf's, canary yellow subwoofers!!!!! paint them to match your car or motorcycle! (I work at a bodyshop, forgive my excitement
  23. Nobody ever talks about the sunfire subs, not even when comparing a klipsch to a velodyne or some other model, why? How would they compare to the other high end subs out there? I have yet to hear one for myself, but they do seem like they would be impressive. Anyone out there think the same? (not that I would buy anything other than klipsch)
  24. I have the ksw12 (little but overall good) am planning on getting the ksw15. I need to go a little deeper on my movies (don't do 2 much music). would I be better of doing 2 12's? Read a few other posts about placement, what I planned on doing was placing the12 up front and the 15 behind my couch at a lower cutoff frequency than the 12, but that doesn't jive with what I've been hearing to do. will mostly be watching dvd's on my sony da30 es receiver in DD & DTS, sounds like I might here the difference alot from what I've read so far. Any other opinions, anyone else run a ksw12 and 15? This message has been edited by HTADDICT on 06-12-2001 at 12:47 AM
  25. are you still looking to buy the same package? Or have you bought it allready?
