  1. If

any of you have read some of my previous posts, you can see that I enjoy build

    Klipsch inspired speakers.

1 mistake I always seem to make is wanting to build the cabs just

a bit bigger and then coming to my senses and adding material to get the cab

    back to the correct volume.

    So

far I have built, a pair of single cab Cornscalas (All sourced from Bob Crites

    (K55, PH-800 horn, Ct125 tweeter, Bobs 15" Woofers, and his Crossover)). 1

Pair of rehabbed Heresy's (New Crites crossover, and 12" woofers, APT50

tweeters, 1 pair of Split La Scalas (New everything from Crites... again :-). 1

pair of CS-1s Parts from Bob, and what I thought were my last speakers, my

Split Cornscalas (K401/K55 Selenuim 220ti/HM17-25, Eminence 15C woofers and

Bobs crossovers. During the last several years, this has been my hobby and how I’ve

spent my free time... listening to music in the middle of night, etc. Part of

the hobby has been the continuous learning process. All these builds resulted

in a bunch of speakers sold for 50cent on the dollar as finding the right buyer

can be hard. As a result I didn’t get to keep all my creations but held on to

the cornscalas as they were the most pleasing to me.

    About

a year ago I began to lust after Bob's part list for the Selenuim based 3way…

using the massive D405 driver. Shortly after the discovery of the HF200 I saw

Dave Harris’ Eliptrac horns and fell in love, but couldn’t justify the costs. 2 save cash I tried the HF200 with the JBL2380

as a 2way and they just didn’t have the same luster my split cornscala’s had.

(I built the 2way into a separate top hat and was able to A vs B the 2

speakers. Some parts left to fund my expansion, and I got the Eliptrac 400 and

Dave was kind enough to graft into my existing 2way cab. As a 2way (HF200/ Eliptrac

400 1st order crossover @500hz.) I still was not in love the Eliptrac

400 was a significant improvement and yes I knew I could live with it, but this

was to be my last speaker for a while. So I was left with the 3way top-hats in

the closet, easting up serious space… I was unwilling to sell and lose more

money, and I had the Eliptrac 400 that were a serious improvement, but I missed

the 3way sound. What to do?

    I

did some more reading from Dave and ALK and started thinking about space and my

existing investment., and what I could afford for floor space. I knew I didn’t have

the time to build another set of cornscala’s from scratch. Having seen Dave’s

work, I asked if he would build me a set of narrow Scala 3ways with his horn. Dave said he couldn’t due to time constraints,

but that he has a Split Cornscala cabinet empty and needing a good home. (Now

Id have a Harris build speaker!).

    This

Split Cornscala was the initial work of another forum member and the craftsmanship

shows. In speaking with ALK I became interested in the ES5800 network and the

possibility of 2way/3way on the fly operation. So we are using ALK’s AP12-500

for a gentle slope and the ES5800 for the 3way operation. I hope ALK or Dave

can chime in on the work… I got to be the recipient!. There is a switch on the back that allows for

toggling between 2way and 3 way operation. Dave’s cornscala is a show piece of what’s

possible, his Eliptrac 400/Faital HF200, his Conical tweeter lens for the

Selenuim 200ti and the Eminence 15C. All

these parts kick *** on their own, but together became my last speaker.

    When

run against my 3 way split cornscala’s (K401/k55, Selenuim

220ti/HM17-25 I found my beloved speakers sounding honky/ and rough in the top

end. Im not seriously wondering how to make adjustments. (Im not great at

describing speakers… Long story, short… these seemed right. The mid bass, mids

and highs were so accurate. I like the bass from my splits better, but that’s a

question on cabinet build choices… My bins should never have been made… 3x

thicker than they should be… mad as a mistake… though a good sounding one.

Needless to say, my last speaker is my favorite speaker.

  2. I got the chance to hang with Dave Harris a bit today. He is work on
a 3 way Cornscala, his Eliptrac 400/ Faital HF200, his custom tweeter lens,
Eminence 15C and crossovers by ALK. (2way/3way switchable on the fly).

When I first dropped parts off at Dave’s he was showing other
projects to me and showed me his 1” tweeter lens… I thought it looked bad ***
and asked if it could be used on my speaker. Today Dave gave the Selenium
HM17-25 a listen versus his tweeter lens. This was the Selenium HM17-25 +
Selenium 220ti screw on vs his lens + Selenium 220ti bolt on. When I spoke to
his on the phone he said they measured the same, but they sounded night
and day different. I had been driving 3 hours and really thought I wouldn’t hear the diff,
but still wanted the circular horn anyway as it was so cool! He did a A vs B comparison… the Selenium
HM17-25 was played alone vs his setup… my god the difference was not night and
day… but far beyond…Never seen home 1 singular part could make such a
difference. The lens is the shit… Very happy it will be included in the
    Cornscala.

Ive used the Selenium HM17-25 in my current 3way cornscala and
love them, but this comparison was mind blowing… now how to integrate a 2nd
set… I promised the wife after this no audio purchases till after the year. :-(

  3. With the M2380 horn and the HF200 the highs did not need the HF boost... Almost cutting with it in place for me. Dave's horn and the a 3way were just taking the idea as far as I could. My wife is amazingly understanding.

My listening room has terrible acustics... Im bebating keeping the M2380 and crossover for a 3rd set of corn scala's.... who knows...Its almost too much, all the different ways to skin a cat.

My k401/K55 base 3way was more than enough. 1/2 the people that hear it perfer it over the PH800/k55 combo in the other room... Both are amazingly impressive... yet each seems to resonate with someone. The M2380/hf200 was a close tie to my K401/K55... The Eliptrac won out... Im hoping the 3 way interation will out pace them all. The problem will then be wanting to bring them all to the same level.

For anyone building a cornscala, I strongly sugest you design some way of replacing the front baffle... allowing you to upgrad as you see fit without signifficant changes.

  4. Thought Id add some notes after listening and thinking some. The M2380 with the Faital HF200 sounded really good to me, putting it on par with my 3way, K401/K55 Selenium D220ti setup. Each has there own sounds, but either I could live with happily. The addition of Dave’s horn, brought a sense of realism/less honky... I didn’t know I was until it was gone. I do think its the most neutral horn I have ever heard, some HF sparkle seem different, less forward than my 3way, but that was expected.I would list the 2380 with HF200 as a better from scratch option than the K401/K55 Tweeter combo. I would say Dave's horns are a significant improvement to this design as well. (Dave's horn is better the a CD horn (2380 CD Horn). Dave is being kind enough to help with my lastly upgrade, taking his horn to a 3way rig. This will allow us to hear it as a 2 way vs a 3way. Not sure which Ill like better. I listened to the Eleiptrac 400 setup for 2 days and then tried the 3way and switched it back pretty quickly... I did the same test, with the same results with the M2380 vs the K401.
  5. Didnt see much tweaking there, this was a perfect install, and the results are super consistant.

Its really interesting, My 3way as a K401/K55 Selenuim 220ti/baby cheek horn is really really hard to improve upon. Or so I thought.

The 3way offers some for electronica, pop and less serious listening types of music. BUT I now hear there is a coloration there... even if a subtle.

The 2ways tear the 3 way apart in vocals, significant improvement.

I can A and B test (placing 1 tophat on the right and the other on the left if needed!).

  6. Well if its a La Scala in a Cornwall box the crossover would have needed to be changed some. The horn is different, looks interesting.

I didnt see a port in the front... if no front. Id be hard pressed to believe it was ported/designed correctly. Id pass and look to build a CS1.5 or find some real la scala's. Bad imitations you definitly do not want.

  7. If you were building the 2way cornscala (or any cornscala) you could use a Emenice 15c with was the defalt before Bob came up with his woofers.

The Selenuim 220ti comes as a 8ohm and as a 16ohm version... to use bob's crossovers you need to use thr 16ohm.

I have tried a generic 12" woofer with bobs crossover and it was acceptible... a bit darker. Bob really did something special when he spec'd this woofer... I believe it goes higher then most 12" woofers... I only use his woofer for the CS projects I have build... they are that good.

I have tried a ported CS1.5 and the CS1. I find the CS1 an easier build, and didnt miss the bass. The CS1.5 goes lower. The CS1 is like a british monitor on steriods.

If I had to chose between 5.1 sound and 2.1 with any verson of cornscala's Id chose the Cornscalas... I have built and some times sell both... I never play my cornscalas if Im trying to sell a CS1.... The sound difference is that pronouced. Bobs flat pack boxs are so cool for building these speakers the right way without all the pain of the learning process.

Lastly, I have run cornscalas are 3ways (a few different versions) and most recently as a 2 way. The 2 way setup is very very cool, Im now upgrading to the elipitrac horns.... hoever I recomend Bobs Cornscala type C... I use something similar... the Selenuim D220ti as use a tweeter is a amazing option.
