  1. I have done this exact modification (B&K Sound Type A/4500 Crossover / CT-125 Tweeters) and am very pleased with the results.

I improves the overall sound of the Klipschorn without altering it beyond recognition.

I dont see your logic, by doing what you have done you changed the hf horn, the hf driver, the crossover, and crossover points.

I am 100% for mods, tinkering etc, but is seems to me that replacing the K-400 horn with with a good tractrix is less intrusive, because you are using the original crossover point and all of the original drivers.

Keep in mind I have 1984 models with the original crossovers (AK-2) with no upgrades. My original gameplan was to upgrade the crossovers with a kit from Crites. I have read a few post where folks suggest replacing the AK-2 instead of upgrading it. Cost is a factor. I don't have an unlimited budget to throw at this project.

I have read the K400 struggles from 4000hz to 6000hz. This being the case, It would appear to me that moving the crossover from 6K down to 4.5K would only improve this issue. My understanding is the stock K77 tweeters can't handle the lower frequency, therefore they are replaced with the CT125's.

I'm not saying I will never replace the K400's. I am one of those who don't think they sound bad. I may at some point decide to replace those horns. At least for now, this seems to be a logical way of upgrading the crossovers and improving at least some of the so called "bad" sound of the K400's.

As far a the cost goes, I can do this upgrade with parts from a fellow forum member for the same price as upgrading the AK-2 crossovers to AK-3's.

  2. I have done this exact modification (B&K Sound Type A/4500 Crossover / CT-125 Tweeters) and am very pleased with the results. I improves the overall sound of the Klipschorn without altering it beyond recognition. I for one am happy with the midrange of the k-horn, and found the A/4500 just helped it out a little bit.

Thanks for your input. I am very pleased at this point with the midrange. I'm not one to listen at wall shattering levels. I'm not jumping right now but this is the way I am leaning, at least so far.

  3. I had some time on my hands to sit and listen today. After listening to these for a couple of hours, I have decided to hold off on any upgrades for a few weeks.

I have Cornwall's that have been re-capped with a kit from Crites. I know I'm not comparing apples to apples but the Khorns which have had no upgrades at all sound amazing in a side by side comparison. The Khorns are new to me. I've never had a pair until now. I think it would be best to invest in several hours of listening before I do anything.

    Thanks for the info!

  4. Finally got them moved to the man cave and tucked into their corners. Thanks to Marshal (groomlakearea51) for the great advice on cleanup and oiling. I cleaned them 3 times with mineral sprits to remove all the old oil. After a good drying, I applied one coat of Old English Lemon Oil. They will get more oil over the next few weeks.

They replaced cornwalls. All I can say at this point is WOW! I have to get the crossovers upgraded and that will probaly be it for a while. The guy had these sitting in the middle of an office floor when I picked them up. Someone who didn't know these had to go in corners would think they have great mids & highs and not much bass. That's true to get them tucked into their corners, then they come alive.

  5. My goal is to update these to the V Trac's from Volti Audio at some point down the road. I could use the ALK's with the new horns.

For now, I need to get them home, cleaned up, oiled, pipe insulation on the tailboards as you did, get them hooked up and playing. This will be my first for horn loaded bass. Smile

  6. I'd like to hear from Sterling after about three weeks with his Khorn's. How are they? I see you traded a set of Cornwalls. Compare the two for me if you don't mind.

I have a set of Cornwalls I've had for about thirty years. I'm about to join the Klipschorn family myself. I have a four hour road trip planned for Wednesday to pick up a pair of Walnut Oiled 84 models. I can't wait to get them home.

  7. Here's my 2 cents worth from the software at

    http://www.alpinesoft.co.uk/

I am impressed with the recording functionality of the software. I have only used the trial version so far. You can record up to 5 albums with the trail, which I have done. Three of the five albums the lookup internet feature worked successfully. This is a sweet feature. This will name and split the tracks. The track splitting feature requires verification that the split is in exactly the right place, and it is very easy to move. You drag it with your mouse. My previous experience was one track at time, so there was no splitting to be done anyway. On the other side of the fence, if the software can't find the album from the internet sources, you have to manually input the track names and manually make the track splits The two albums which the lookup didn’t work on, was a band from Birmingham AL - Hotel. These two albums were from 1979 and 1980.

I selected my output as a wave file @ 192khz/24bit. This gives approximately 2.2 GB per album. I know this huge but I'm not concerned about size at this point in time. I have a 2 TB drive. It should take a while before I'm cramped for space. I will however record at a couple different rates for comparison at some point.

As for the sound, I run my pre-amp flat. I am also running my sound card flat. Does the wav file sound exactly like the album? No but it’s close. There are so many different pc / sound card combinations, out there. Do they all sound identical? I wouldn’t think so. I haven’t had anyone else listen yet. I have a couple of friends coming over this weekend and I’ll use them for my testing.

I wasn’t looking for something to replace my lp albums anyway. If I want my best sound, then it will be from the LP albums. My wave files are on a share on my network so they can be played from multiple locations. This is very convenient & easy. Works really well for background music.

There may be something better out there, but this is well worth my 30ish dollars for the full version.

    Thanks for all the input!
