  1. I have the Cornwalls hooked up. Tubes inserted using my hands around the bottom plastc band & rocking them in. All tubes in the proper sockets.Power cords inserted & plugged in. Amps connected to my Mcintosh preamp. I do not know where the fuses are located. Is there supposed to be an operating manual included with the amps? This assembly manual is of no help. I am getting no sound at all when I try to play a cd. I pulled the CV378 tube next to the power transformer & I am looking at the bottom pins. There are 5 pins & 3 pins that are not there. Is this normal? There are 8 holes in the tube socket. Yes I am turning on the power switches on the back. One of the Sovtek 2A3 tubes has something loose in it. I can not see it. But I can hear something rattling around when I pulled it. I can move the tube from side to side & hear whatever it is moving around inside the tube. The other Sovtek tube does not have the rattling sound when I pulled & checked it. Frustrated. Regards, Mike ------------------ This message has been edited by LonestarBlues on 07-11-2002 at 03:42 AM
  2. I need some help & guidance. The Moondogs arrived last this afternoon. I have put the tubes in their respectve sockets & hooked everything up. The amps are not powering up. I don't know if it is something I might have done wrong. Or if something is wrong with the amps. He sent an assembly manual but there was no operating manual sent. Thanks for the help. 3. Well Julian came through for me. After breaking our agreement to ship Fedex 3 day air & using Mailboxes to ship Fedex ground Saturday. He retrieved the Moondogs & shipped them out Fedex 3 day air today. Fedex cost was $108.96. Mailboxes was charging $86 for ground shipping & $232 for 3 day air. Can you say exorbitant price gouging! He was picking up $85 in shipping & I will reimburse him $23.96. I am happy I convinced him to honor our original agreement. My worst nightmare was to receive a pair of damaged amps through ground shipping & then go through a long drawn out process of filing a damage claim. The Moondogs might have arrived safely via Fedex ground. But I was not willing to chance it. I have had excellent results with Fedex Air shipping & I feel it is much safer mode of shipping. I am excited and waiting with anticipation to be joining the world of tubes. Mike the happy camper ------------------
  4. All has been resolved. Julian has agreed to find a solution & ship the amps out Fedex 3 day air shipping as to our original agreement. I will receive them before next weekend. Being an Old School unrelenting hardass payed off. I did not like his squirelly actions of changing our shipping agreement midstream & not contacting me until after the fact. Then expecting me to accept this. Nah nope wasn't going to happen. Hey is anyone familiar with the Creek P43R passive preamp? It is a full size passive preamp-remote control-4 inputs-2 tape inputs. Retails for $595 new, a store has new units on sale for $499. How about some input on a Conrad Johnson PV 10AL. Retubed from a very reputable dealer that specializes in tube equipment-$599. And a Cary SL50B preamp from a reputable dealer for $895. Yea after I got a little buzz last night from drinking my Shiner Bock beer I was ready to go Dirty Harry on the guy. Cooler heads prevailed & it looks like everything will work out. After having been burned on a large ticket item the latin term caveat emptor comes to mind. Let the buyer beware. Let me assure you if you have ever been burned bad once, it will make you very gunshy & leary. The guy that burned me on the Mcintosh MR 80 tuner was a fellow Texan from Plano-Dallas suburb. He had perfect feedback and seemed like a very nice individual in our phone conversations. That all changed after the tuner in need of repair was delivered. So you can never can tell. Regards, Mike ------------------
  5. Well, I just got off the phone with Fedex. Julian gave me the estimated box dimensions of 20"w x 20"d x 32"t. Fedex 3 day air- 65lbs insured for $2000-estimate of $110.40 if the package is dropped off & $116.09 if Fedex picks up the package. The estimate for ground service insured was $30.82. Quite a difference from the exorbitant price gouging of Mailboxes-$232 for Fedex 3 day air & $86 for ground shipping. I have shipped enough heavy Mcintosh boxes via Fedex 3 day air, so I knew Mailboxes prices were way out of line and higher than dealing with Fedex direct. Calling Fedex verified my assumption. I emailed Julian the estimates & suggested he call Fedex to verify. Yeterday he stated that he could not believe that Mailboxes prices were that much higher than Fedex. I emailed Julian stating he created the problem and it is up to him to resolve it. I will not pay Mailboxes $146 for 3 day air shipping above the $86 he has paid for ground shipping. As per our agreement I should incur $25.40 in reimbursement if he drops the package off at Fedex & $31.09 if Fedex picks up the package. I realize this is an estimate & it could be slightly higher. I also stated it was unacceptable to me to have to wait until Saturday to ship the amps out to me. I was initally promised the amps would be shipped out by the first of the week. I am sorry I don't buy the I am too busy & can't pick the amps up from Mailboxes until Saturday to reship via Fedex Air. I expect him to find the time. I am Old School-when you make an agreement you fufill that agreement. You don't change it midstream & then make excuses why you deviated from the agreement. I am waiting for his response to see if he is going to be willing to resolve this mess that he created to my satisfaction. I do not feel that I am being unreasonable. I sure hope the situation is resolved amicably. Mike the unhappy camper ------------------
  6. Julian emailed a response to me about shipping the amps Fedex ground instead of 3 day air as we had agreed. I have our agreement from an email printed out for documentation. He gave a bullshit excuse that he was trying to save me some money in shipping as He had agreed to cover $85 in shipping & Mailboxes was charging $232 for 3 day air & $86 for Fedex Home which is ground shipping. How he had to change his plans today to ship the amps so he could get the amps out to me today. It was his decision to change his plans. I did not make this request. He did say he was sorry for the misunderstanding. He gave me two suggestions to resolve ths issue. 1.) He will call Mailboxes first thing on Monday & tell them to hold the Fedex pickup. He will not be able to pick up the amps to re-ship via Fedex Air until Saturday. 65 lbs is too heavy for his wife to deal with. 2.) I can call Mailboxes directly and instruct them to ship via Fedex 3 day air & fund the difference in the balance of $86 he paid for ground shipping. Well if Mailboxes is charging $232-the $86 he paid for ground shipping, I would have still have to pay Mailboxes $146. I requested he give me the dimensions of the box so I can call Fedex at 1-800-463-3339 to get an estimate on shipping 65 lbs insured for $1900. I am trying to work this supposed misunderstandng out amicably and have been nice so far. I stated multiple times in various emails No ground shipping-Fedex 3 day air only. He agreed to this a long as I picked up shipping costs over $85. I myself do not use Mailboxes because I know that they jack up the shipping price for being a middleman. I used an analogy that he would be upset if I deviated from our agreement & sent a payment for $1700 instead of the agreed upon price of $1900. He deviated from our agreement by shipping Fedex ground instead of the agreed upon Fedex 3 day shipping. I told him he should have contacted me instead of shipping by ground. I do not want to risk possible damage shipping by ground. It has been my experience that Fedex Air is a much safer mode of shipping. I have been drinking a few Shiner Bock beer and I am starting to get pissed by his attitude. He gladly took my cashiers check of $1900 which I mailed overnight Express mail. Yet he expects me to wait a week for shipping because he is too busy. When I get the box dimensions I can get an estimate directly from Fedex. I do not believe it is going to be $232. My previous estimate when I called the 1-800#- 75 lbs- no box dimensions insured for $1900 was $118.99. Once I get a cheaper estimate from Fedex, I would like to bypass Mailboxes completely. I wonder if I called Fedex if they would pick up the box from Mailboxes & not have Mailboxes tack on their middleman fee. I am a laidback nice Texan & Julian seemed like a nice guy when I talked to him on the phone. But I am not so nice if I feel like I am being taken advantage of & cingaleed(Tex-Mex slang). I can be an ******* with the best of them. I sure hope this works out amicably. Mike the unhappy camper ------------------
  7. I am not a happy camper right now. I emphatically requested no ground shipping for the Moondog amps. I wanted Fedex 3 day air shipping only. Julian had agreed to pay for $85 shipping & any amount over that I would reimburse him. I recieved an email this afternoon from that he had recieved my cashiers check. And that he had shipped the amps out today via Fedex Home service which is Fedex ground at a cost of $86. He told me Fedex 3 day air shipping was $232. That seemed very high to me so I called Fedex at 1-800-463-3339 and got some estimates for shipping. I did not know the dimensions of the box or the weight. I used 75 lbs insured for $1900 to get estimates. I was given an estimate 75lbs insured for $1900- $118.99. Fedex ground estimate 75 lbs insured for $1900- $40.59. I realize the estimates could be higher since I did not know the box dimensions. I emailed Julian back giving him the estimates I had received from Fedex & nicely asking where he got his shipping rates from. Julian replied that he had taken the amps to Mailboxes. I know Mailboxes jacks up their rates for shipping to make a profit for themselves. But do they jack it up over $100 for Fedex 3 day air shipping? I emailed Julian stating I was not a happy camper and that he should have contacted me and not shipped by ground. I requested that he attempt to retrieve the package from Mailboxes and ship directly through Fedex. I do not know if he is willing to do this or if it can be done. He has not replied to my last email. My worst nightmare is receiving a pair of damaged Moondog amps. Mike the unhappy camper ------------------
  8. Hello Kelly. I want to thank you for taking your time, trouble & effort to educate me about the Moondog amps. You are truly a gentleman. The email pics Julian sent me have the tall GZ-37 rectifier tube like your amps have. I don't know what the proper terminology is for the red metal band along the bottom of the tube. The 6SN7 tubes also have red metal bands. Again, thanks for the informative illustrated post. Regards, Mike ------------------
  9. Hello y'all. I Express mailed a $1900 cashiers check from my bank to Julian this morning. The check will be delivered tomorrow. I called Julian this afternoon. He bought the factory assembled Moondogs 1/30/2002 as part of system discount. He also bought some lowther drivers & Oris 150 horns. He is selling them also. He bought a ATC active speaker system as replacements. The amps have 20-30 hours on them. He was using a solid state Sierra Whitney amp to drive bass drivers & the Moondogs on the Oris horns. Julian suggested using my Mcintosh C38 preamp instead of a passive preamp. He does not like passives. How good is the base model AES AE3 tube preamp? How would it compare to a passive preamp? The Antique Soundlabs TIDT passive preamp uses autoformers, was reviewed on Enjoy The Music ezine. What does a transformer do to a passive preamp performance wise? I am a tube newbie so I can use advice & guidance. Julian is going to make a copy of the sales receipt for me. He does not know which parts were used in the upgrade package, he did not request any specific parts to customize. Are oil caps part of the normal upgrade package? He did not know whether the rectifier tube was a Sovtek 5AR4 or Mullard CV378/GZ-37. I am a tube newbie so I need some learnin' on tubes-Tubes 101. Are there 4 tubes per mono block amp? Could any of you knowledgeable tube gurus explain the various tubes & functions. I know the 2a3 is the power tube but that's about it. Julian has the original 3 piece boxes, 2 small boxes fitting inside one large box. Will ship Fedex 3 day air next week. I will not use UPS. UPS has burned me twice. Fedex Air has been good to me & has not damaged any of my Mcintosh equipment when I have used them as a shipper. Julian suggested I contact Ron Welborne to find out what parts were used in the upgrade package. He is going to send me some email pics. I am like a little kid waiting for Christmas to come. My cd players are a Mcintosh MCD 7009-output voltage 2.2 & Pioneer Elite PD 65 output voltage 2.0. Thanks for all advice & guidance. It is greatly appreciated. Regards, Mike ------------------
  10. Hello Kelly. I snagged those Moondog amps. I saw the ad on Audiogon this morning around 8:45. I sent an email with some questions. Julian responded this afternoon. I made an offer of $1800. He responded with a counter offer of $1900 & he would pick up $80 to $90 shipping. I am stoked that I am going to be getting a high quality 2a3 tube amp to mate with one pair of my Cornwalls. I will have to pick up a passive preamp, Creek OBH 12, FT Audio LW1 or Mccormack TLC 1. The guy lives in Midlothian Virginia-suburb of Richmond. I just spent $3000 several days ago on a Lennox 3-1/2 ton condensor unit for my central air conditioning. The old unit was 19 years old & the compressor went out. I had replaced the furnace back in 1999 when the evaporator coil plugged up, it was the original furnace in the house that my dad built in 1964. I will not be able to afford a tube preamp for a while. Kelly, he has the original boxes for packing. Any idea of the shipping weight? He had 40 lbs listed in his ad. Thanks for your reply. Regards, Mike ------------------
  11. Hello. Magnetar-Mike Bates over at Audioasylum bought a pair of these amps several months ago off ebay. Mike is knowledgeable about tube amps. I emailed him & also posted at the High Effenciency Speaker forum. Mike emailed back & also posted a response at the asylum. Mike posted a negative response to Audio Mirror because his amps blew up. Mike stated the amps have the wrong power supply in them. A secondary in the PS transformer(multi-tapped secondaries is undersized(12.6 volt) and can't handle the current. Mike advised me not to do business with these guys as these guys cannot be trusted. They have given him the runaround. My initial negative gut reaction to these guys after trading emails with Audio Mirror was correct. I just felt something was not exactly kosher. There is no way in hell I will buy their amps. Regards, Mike ------------------
  12. Hello Kelly. The amps are stated to be brand new. Ebay item# 1361019378. I asked several questions previous to bidding including how long was the warranty? They replied to all my questions but omitted replying to the warranty question.I made an assumption they sold through an escrow service because their ad states they do. I also made an assumption that a new product sold by the manufacturer would carry a warranty. The guy stated in his reply that they use ebay to advertise their product and that is why they sell them so cheap under the retail price. The reserve was $1000, retails for $1900. He stated in the past that they had problems with using an escrow service. People would resale the amps on ebay the very next day during the alloted inspection period that is allowed under an escrow sale. This is why they do not allow the use of an escrow service or offer waranties on their amps sold on ebay. They did offer to sell me a 1 year warranty. I don't know if I am overreacting but my gut tells me something is not quite right. When you have been burned once for an item at $1000 it makes you gunshy. An escrow service gives you an inspection period agreed upon by both the buyer & seller while the escrow service holds the payment. After the nightmare with the Mcintosh MR80 tuner I bought off ebay, seller would not sell through escrow. The guy sold me a tuner in need of repair that he had bought from Audioclassics. I owned the MR 80 tuner for 14 months, Audioclassics had the tuner for a total period of 11 months. Sent in 4 different times for repair. UPS delivered the tuner to me Monday of last week. It worked fine for 8 hours. Turned it on Tuesday morning & none of the presets or autoscan up & down would work-only the manual tuning knob. I traded it in on a Mcintosh MR77 & a Magnum Dynalab ST 2 antenna. Fedex delivered the MR77 this past Friday. I took it in the shorts on the MR80 tuner & lost money. I am leaning towards flaking out & not buying the amps, my gut tells me something is not quite kosher. Thanks for your reply. Regards, Mike ------------------
  13. Hello. After exchanging email with Audio Mirror, I am having serious reservations about buying the amps. Their ad stated Escrow is accepted if buyer pays fee. When I emailed them to set up an escrow sale, they sent a reply no escrow sales & that their amps sold on ebay have no warranty. Only amps sold at retail price carry a warranty. This is sending up redflags in my head that these must be b-stock refurbished amps. My gut reaction is telling me that something is not kosher. Having been burned on my last ebay purchase of a Mcintosh MR 80 tuner. I am very gunshy and will not buy without the protection of an escrow service. My gut is telling me to flake out & not buy them. What repurcussions besides negative feedback are their for not following through with the purchase? Regards, Mike ------------------
  14. Hello tubephiles. I bought a new Audio Mirror Eargasm amp from ebay today. It is a triode pure class A parallel set amp using Russian 6H8C -6SN7 tubes, self biasing-30Wx2. Retails for $1900, got it for $1000 from the manufacturer Audio Mirror. This is my first tube amp, I am currently using ss Mcintosh. I own a 1977 pair of Cornwalls & a 1983 pair of Cornwalls along with a motley crew of other speakers-2 pair of late 70's Advents, early 90's JBL LX55, 2000 Yamaha NS 10 studio monitors, Optimus LX5 with the Lineum tweeter & 1977 Bose 301's-my very first speakers. I remember when I was young & dumb & thought Bose was the cats meow. The stereo dealer I bought my Advents from back in the late 70's also carried EPI & Klipsch. I fell in love with Klipsch speakers way back then but could not afford them back when I was 19-20 years old. Well I found & bought 2 pair of Cornwalls in the past 2 years here in south Texas. A pair of 1977 birch in San Antonio & a pair of 1983 walnut in Sugarland-a Houston suburb. The guy in San Antonio was running the Cornwalls with an EAR 859 SET integrated amp 13Wx2. This was my first exposure to a tube amp & I was impressed. With all the discussion of tube amps on this forum I decided I wanted to explore the world of tubes. I want to try out a passive preamp such as a Creek OBH-12-$325, FTAudio LW1-$495 Antique Soundlabs TIDT-$399, Mccormack TLC-1-$599. Any advice or other suggestions is welcome. I am on a budget. I eventually want to buy a tube preamp such as the Wright WPL 20 preamp. Can't swing that kind of dinero right now so I want to try out a passive preamp. I could use it with my Mac C38 preamp but I want to be able to compare the difference in sonics between the Mcintosh solid state & tubes. Thanks for any help. Regards, Mike ------------------
  15. Hello Mobile. Has the Joplin 2a3 amp been delivered to you yet & have you been able to make any comparisons with your other tube amps? I am a lurker here & at the Asylum & rarely post. I am wanting to buy a tube amp sometime in the near future. The Joplin looks interesting. I am also looking at the Wright 3.5, the Moondogs & Audio Mirror parallel set amps. Magnetar at the Asylum purchased the 30 watt Audio Mirror amp & he liked it better than his Wright 3.5 2a3's. The Audio Mirror uses a Russian military tube 6C33. The 15 watt version uses 6H5C/6AS7G tubes. FS Audioweb on the Asylum carries them. There is also the vintage tube amp route. I have no experience with tube equipment. I own 1977 birch Cornwalls & 1983 walnut Cornwalls. I am using solid state Mcintosh-7150 amp, C38 pre- amp, MCD 7009 cd player, Pioneer Elite PD 65 cd player, MR 80 tuner & Nakamichi 480 cassete deck. I don't have my turntable hooked up right now. The gentleman I bought my birch Cornwalls from was a tube man. He had the Cornwalls in his secondary system hooked up to an EAR 859 set integrated amp-13 watts x 2, EAD transport & dac. I really liked the sound of tubes & Cornwalls. I like the Cornwalls with my ss Mcintosh but I am hankering to try out a tube amp. I have no soldering skills. If I go the kit route I am going to have an Electrical Engineer in Austin who owns a stereo repair shop do the assembly. They specialize in repairing vintage tube equipment. I like the Moondogs & Wright but I am scared that 3.5 watts will not be enough power if I get a wild hair and want to crank up the volume. I listen to jazz, blues, classical, rock, new wave & country. I like to crank up the volume every so often. The Joplin looks like an inexpensive way to enter the wonderful world of tubes. If I go the Joplin route I would go with the cap & resistor upgrades & Dact volume control. I have only heard a tube system twice in my life two years ago at Andrew's home. The gentleman I bought my first pair of Cornwalls from in San Antonio. I was drooling over his main system- Audio Research VT100 mkII amp, Wadia transport & dac direct to the amp, no preamp and some big beautiful Proac tower speakers. The sound to me was incredibly good as I have only read about this level of equipment. I have no practical experience with the different sonic flavors of tubes and tube amps-set, pushpull. Just information I have read. There are no highend shops here in Corpus Christi, it is a midfi wasteland of hometheater shops only. Thanks Kelly for your reply & anyone else with tube experience & knowledge that wants to reply. Regards, Mike ------------------
  16. I am interested in trying out a tube amp. I am using solid state Mcintosh currently. I have 2 pair of Cornwalls-1977 & 1983. I have a Mcintosh MR 80 tuner at an out of state dealer waiting for a UPS claim decision. They have a demo VAC Auricle-55 wpc. Retail price-$2000, selling for $1495. Looks very similar to the Marantz 8B reissue, vac-amps.com. Factory reconditioned Conrad Johnson MV 55 -$1459. And a demo Marantz 8B reissue-$2695. I am thinking about trading in my tuner for one of these amps if they will give me a decent trade in price. Is there any difference in build quality? Thanks for any advice & opinions of these amps. ------------------

Let me throw out my 2 cents worth of opinion. I am not an audiophile but I am a music lover. I do not belong to the audiophile school of thought that all tone controls or equalizers are evil. And that using tone controls or equalizers is doing nothing but adding distortion & phase problems. I use an Alesis M-EQ 230 1/3 octave equalizer-30 bands per channel, + 12 or -12 db of boost or cut. Dynamic range 107 db, THD<0.005%. This equalizer has audio power muting to protect your gear from on/off transients, in/out bypass switch on both channels to compare original signal to EQ'd sound, LED signal lights for EQ in, clip indicator, signal present & power, master channel gain fader of + or - 12 db. This equalizer is pro music gear but has rca jacks along with 1/4" inputs. I use this equalizer with an all Mcintosh solid state system-MC 7150 power amp(150 watts per channel), C 38 preamp, MCD 7009 cd player & Pioneer Elite PD 65 cd player, MR 80 tuner, Nakamichi 480 cassette deck, don't have my turntable hooked up right now. Driving 2 pair of Cornwalls-a 1977 pair of cherry stained birch & a 1983 pair of oiled walnut in a room 24'L x 19'W x 8'H. The Cornwalls are 17' apart on each long wall. I personally prefer the use of tone controls & equalizers. But I realize not everyone does, so to each his own on whether to use them. The Alesis eq retails for $299 but can be purchased cheaper off the internet. Rane also makes good equalizers but they run higher in cost- the Rane ME 60 1/3 octave eq retails at $699 & the Rane Mojo MQ 302 retails at $429. Both of these are 30 bands per channel. The only thing I do not care for about the Alesis eq is the adjustment sliders per band are small. The tone controls & eq can make crappy sounding recordings much more tolerable with judiciuos use. Room acoustic problems can be fixed also. The only way to find out if you like an equalizer is to try one out in your system. Try and find a store with a liberal return policy so you can try an eq in your system. If you don't like it, then return it for a refund. ------------------
  18. I am using an Alesis M-EQ 230, 1/3 octave equalizer in my system- Mcintosh solid state & 4 Cornwalls. The Alesis is actually pro gear that has rca & 1/4" jacks. I have never been a member of the audiophile purist school of thought, no tone controls period. Audiophile purist espouse the use of different brands & types of speaker wire & interconnects to tailor the sound. Most high end gear, preamps have no tone controls. I have subjectively always preferred the use of tone controls and an equalizer. Corrections can be made for poor room acoustics. Bad recordings can be made tolerable with judicious use of an equalizer. The Alesis has multiple led lights on the front panel for each channel. Eq in, signal present, clip indicator, power. It has variable gain +or-12 db for each channel & a bypass switch for each channel. It all boils down to personal choice and what you like.

  20. I own a pair of 1977 birch Cornwalls and a pair of 1983 walnut Cornwalls. I purchased the 1983 pair last Saturday a week ago in Houston. There are slight differences in between the Cornwalls. The 1977 pair has the 2 inch riser base and the front edges have a rounded moulding. The 1983 pair has flat edges and no riser. The Klipsch logos are different. The woofers look the same but their dustcaps are different. The 1977 woofer dustcaps are smaller in diameter and protrude out like a little ***. The 1983 woofer dustcaps are larger in diameter and are flat. The 1977 pair has 2 rectangular ports while the 1983 pair has 3 ports. Both have the Electro Voice T-35 tweeter, Atlas midrange and metal horns. Both pair are in good condition with minor scratches and dings. I am running them with a Mcintosh system: MC 7150 amp, C 38 preamp, MR 80 tuner, MCD 7009 cd player, Pioneer Elite PD 65 cd player, Nakamichi 480 cassette deck, Mitsubishi LT-5V linear tracking vertical standing turntable with Shure V 15-III & Yamaha MC-7 moving coil cartridges, Alesis M-EQ 230,1/3 octave equalizer and Niles HDS-6L speaker selector. I am running both pair of Cornwalls. My room is 24'L x 19'W x 8'H. The Cornwalls are about 17' apart on each long wall. Two are in corners and the other two are against the wall toed in. I have it so the right & left channels are firing diagonal across the room, right channel to right channel, left to left. The sound is incredible, very dynamic. Is that birch plywood beneath the walnut veneer? I used Old English lemon oil on the walnut last Saturday night and Old English scratch remover & polish on them Sunday. The walnut drank it up and it improved their cosmetic appearance and condition.

The front corners are flat on these. The dust cap on the 1977 Cornwall woofers are smaller in diameter. The 1983 woofer dustcaps are larger in diameter and flatter. Why the difference, I assume they are using the same woofer. They look the same, just different size dust caps. Is the 1983 Cornwall walnut veneer over birch or is it solid walnut?
