  1. Well much have changed since I started this thread. The LS are working now as mains. I moved the 901 to a shelf getting ready to sell. The heresy are now sitting in the L/R surround position, soon to move to rear. Last Friday found a decent pair of '85 Cornwall II for $400. These are now sitting in the rear L/R at the moment. I took the 301 and daisy chained them to the center channel for a 4ohm load. So now I have all positions covered including the baby sub. Adding the center channel changed the entire sound scape. More so than I figured it would. Really enjoying movies more now. Of course the wife is looking at me like I'm nuts as the living room looks like my old band studio minus the drum kit.
  2. Can anyone confirm my plan of attack on these La Scala? I have another pair of problems. Found some Cornwall II 1985 from the origional owners son going off to college for $400. Could not pass them up. So this means for sure any major mod budget for the LS is out the window. At least till I rid myself of the 901s. Would like to address the questions above so I can at least clean up the AA Network for now.
  3. Dropped the T2A Tap to #2. Didn't see a measurable difference in the ohm rating. They sound better for sure. Tried an AB comparison with the other on #4. Tried #3 but felt the #2 was a best so far. Yeah I know change that horn! With the tap now on #2 am I causing any issues for the drivers or amp? Each tap change didn't modify the impedance from what I see. Or am I missing something about the need for the resistor to balance. Reading deeper about mods to the AA and note Al kicking himself for all the suggestions. Noting the options offered by ALK so far what else should be added to the following? 1) Add a 1.0uFd capacitor in parallel to the two 2uFd. 2) Remove the woofer inductor screw and or change the inductor to a "2.4 mHy air core woofer inductor". 3) Ditch the zeners. judging from what I've read they are not needed with the tweeters on board and can cause distortion at high levels. I turn it up somtimes. Will have to do some more vibration damening. Noticed the text on the TV (projection) vibrating. 4) Swamping resistor? Would 10 ohm work for this stack of compromises? If so where is it placed, not clear on this part yet. Would like the ability to move the attenuation around. Looking at doing these crossover mods just to clean up this before trying a new/different design. Well see where this leads me. Thanks for your assistance thus far gents.
  4. Didn't dig into his site till now. Thanks for the heads up, horns those look nice Dave. I have to be careful in what changes to take as anything must be reversible. I'm looking for any extra parts to be part of a new speaker like a cornscala scenario.
  5. Thanks Dave. I just really don't want to carve cabinets or even take the grill cloth off yet. They are in really good condition considering their age. I'm considering just dropping the tap and placing a resistor as a short term fix. Just can't afford new crossovers at the moment. Still need to confirm values from what I've read so far but it seems another compromise to try. I was hoping for more bass throw from these. So it seems I need to take the squawker down at least two fill steps on the transformer. And the beat goes on.
  6. Horn mods are not in my future on these speakers. ALK universal seems to be a good fit for my needs. The only issue I see is they will be power hungry. But if it allows the flexibility I need to adjust with the current drivers with the K400, then it may be the direction I take. Trying to avoid costly experiments.
  7. Yep they are Walnut with stock flat riser. Would like to see what you have to offer. A set of slants would be nice. May not be needed tough as I have to raise them off the floor at minimum 2'. Serious furniture issues. The LS is going to need a taming to work in this position. My intent was to see if I like these, I do like them. But what I'm finding (quickly) is they are way to harsh for this application. But take them to a 2 channel arrangement and they start coming alive. You guys have covered so much ground on this forum I have many years of catching up with possible mods and outcome. Bobs 4500 cross over looks interesting. But I'm not sure it's going to cover all my expectations.... Reading and thinking and listening.
  8. Heresy rears. Like the speakers too. Will be side surround once I figure a decent stand for them. Need to be up 3' or so.
  9. Room Shot. Yes I have the 301 on the sides for now. Going to shuffle them back. 901 are shelved at this point.
  10. So it seems the best alternative at this point is to leave well enough alone and read some more. Was hoping I could just change the tap and check it out but now it looks like i need more capacitors. Would be nice to set it up so I could have a mini toggle back there to make adjustments in the mid and not affect the impedance. Have each tap and cap combo needed on each leg of the toggle. Was hoping for a quick fix but now were getting into the interesting stuff. The network. I don't want to wack my amp with a weird load. At least I have them on a separate amp from the AV receiver. Figure a $300 amp is acceptable to sacrifice with these friggen PA speakers. Any advice on that level you can impart would be appreciated. Cheers.
  11. Thanks Mon also found this thread. http://community.klipsch.com/forums/p/101968/1029022.aspx
  12. Not finding Auto Transformer tap information as it relates to the LS/AA combo... Mids are a bit harsh and I'd like to send some more current to the woofer. Cheers, Sean
  13. Whooo Hooo the CW1526 are here! Work has been a bear today. But this almost makes up for it! Cant wait to finish this off for some live testing.[]
  14. Crossovers complete... Still need to replace that screw in the inductors. Waiting for the UPS man with the woofers and I should be good to go. Unfortunatly I don't have a sacrificial mid or woofer to test with. All my other 15" speakers are 8 ohm.
  15. Good deal will have to go get some new spade connectors and I'll be ready. Also understand the name brand means very little, it's what I have. I was one of a few consultants/PM (no longer consulting) that assisted Monster Cable move to their current facility in Brisbane, Ca. What a cluster of a project, but we made it work for them on a shoe string budget. Ahhhh the memories. The owner Noel Lee's desk was out of hand. It's all carved Koa, one of my favorite hardwoods.
  16. Ok I do have several different guages of Monster Cable. Would that suffice for the intrconnect?
  17. Yep AA. Was going to start tearing into them last night but it was already a long day. Called it quits after putting the top end back together. Love the order of operation required with the CT125's larger magnet. So I had to install the tweeters after the K400. Yeah I installed the tweeters twice, no big deal but my knees aren't what they used to be. After pondering the condition of these wires it did seem to start at the input leg and carried over through this tweeter circuit. What wire do you guys suggest using for the rebuild? After looking at them I came to the same conclusion all of the interconnects should be replaced. More work than I wanted but should be simple enough. Just need to clear some bench space and prep for the task at hand.
  18. Here is a close up of the leads that showed signs of major heat. Interesting as this was the one with the good testing tweeter. The two black leads under the tweeter protection diodes. Should I be testing the coils for added resistance or anything before replacing caps? These insulators were fused together and looked like some thick shrink tube till I pulled them apart... The other crossover shows no sign of this happening.
  19. I have my friends La Scala's in the garage now. Initial goal is to clean them up and give a listen. These are matching SN 19T605 and 19T606. The deal is if I like them they are mine. If I don't want to keep them I hand them back and he will pay for the restore materials. Upon the initial testing found one had a bad tweeter and the other had a bad woofer. Both squawkers tested ok. 19T605: T= open, S= 11.1, W= 3.6 19T606: T= 6.7, S=11.3, w=open So with these understood I called Bob and placed an order. Two new stamped frame woofers and new CT125's, plus a DIY crossover cap replacement kit. Should be here this week just in time to put back together for the 4th of July BBQ. A couple of old band mates will be here and I can't wait for their reaction to the HT setup thus far. Addressed a full cab cleanup light soap and water wipe down and fixed rough edges on 605 unit BB veneerer. This cab was the one next to the door to the house. It showed the most wear and tear as it was rotated to point out the door to the yard while he mowed the lawn. No wonder he never heard the distortion that caused the entire surround on the K-33 to disintegrate. Unfortunately there was also some Rodent evidence and not the small kind. Was scary how much dust can accumulate on the bottom lip of the K400. I did also dump a load of oil into the veneer and ran out. Will go get some more later today and keep rubbing it in. For now just making them presentable and if I keep them will do a full dress later. I would like some advice about one of the crossovers. 606 had a couple of leads get hot and melt the insulators together. The leads that were hot are #2 (red) input and #7 (black) tweeter.... No telling what one was warm and caused the other to fuse together. Unless there are some tests I should complete and ensure the Transformer or the coil are ok.... I'll get some pictures posted but at the moment dealing with work.
  20. Thanks for talking about this guys. I have a old pair of AA and noticed this circuit but wondered why it was there where I don't see them on other cross overs. Strange as I have one tweeter testing open and the other not. With the diods in place what else would have blown out this tweeter?
  21. Kind of kicking myself as there have been a couple of local Belle pairs go via craigslist recently. Should have bit the bullet and at least looked at them. Being that money is always tight it's again hard to get the female unit to understand the expence. I hope your right in that after I get this moving she will be happy with the sound.
  22. A Klipsch Belle makes a great TV stand and its sound matches really well with La Scalas. If you can't find a single, you can get a pair and use the second one for centre rear in a 6.1 configuration. It works for me! This is all going to be very hard for the wife to understand. She wants (now) something like the Bose Lifestyle cubes.... I asked her when we bought the AV receiver. We can go one of two ways. Little discrete speakers or we can shake your booty. She said "shake her booty". But now she's understanding what that takes and not very happy. The way it is now. Too damn bad I'm going this direction, no looking back now.
  23. You are reading my mind. It's one option at the moment to consider. The 901 could also be suspended. Only issue in that is they are the black units and will look like warts hanging over the walls. Did some driver tests on the la scala. Bad tweeter in one and bad woofer in the other. I know the capacitors (just old and used up) need replacing so that was a given. You should have seen the dust cloud blowing our the back of the cab. I'm assuming these drivers are not salvagable as they offer an open OHM reading. This means the voice coils are shot, Right?
  24. So here is the deal. I have the La Scalas at the house in all their raw birch glory. Mainly dings and a couple veneer corner crunches so far, grill labels missing for some reason, they may turn up after the move. Well see what happens when I get into the components. I'm sure There will be some questions along the way. As expected the wife was not too pleased. I told her to wait for the results when these are in the house. She's right though, these units are big. But I told her they are not near as big as the Khorns, didn't help my argument. These were handed over with one stipulation. If I like them and keep them they are mine. If I'm not satisfied and don't intend to keep them in service they go back to the original owner and he will pay me for parts replaced. Either way these are going to see some love soon and fired up.
