  1. 100-300hz? really I figured that would pretty much all being going to the bass bins with the way the eq settings on the dx38 are. I'm sure I can find tone mp3 and use that.
  2. The wait is killing me, they told me a 1-5pm window but, the truck is way behind. I'll be getting them tonight but my guess is not until after 9pm. What is the break in like on the k69? Is there any?
  3. Very funny... It shouldn't be legal to make a man jump that fast to google.
  4. My horns should be here Monday! I have every thing wired and set up in the dx38, currently running a pair of JBL 4410 up top and the bass bin dailed way down so the mesh up, and I'm kinda suprised this sounds pretty decent. Not a hint of hum either. All thats left to do is set those massive horn on top and dial in the smiles. Super excited. Guess it's about time to update my system profile
  5. Well I got my preamp, and my cables, hooked it all up tonight just to test for hum, not even the tiniest bit , Now the only thing left is the for the horns to ship and dailing in the programing on the dx38. I am truely excited now. Waiting is torture, but this new preamp is enough fun to tied me over for now.
  6. Good idea coytee, I plan on doing just that when I get my cables, and my new preamp, this week. I have been messing with the dx38 a little to get feel how the interface works seems straight forward enough. I ended up buying a quicksilver audio full feature preamp which is buitl like freaking tank and has 6 power outlets on the back, so I'm hope by common grounding it together with the amps and the dx, I can also reduce or get rid of any possible hum, but I suppose we shall waight and see, not a ton of info on the amp, but their later power amps seem well respected and this pre has the most over built power supply I've ever seen.
  7. Agian thanks for everyone's help so far, my order for the 402's has been sent in, I got my dx38 today, and my adcom, cables should be here monday, then i just gotta wait for the big boys to arrive. Been running the adcom on my speakers to see how they sound down low and the definately have more authority then my st70 does. My relatively crappy preamp has what I believe is a cold solder joint issue, which I thought I had fixed but my right channel has yet again dropped out. I'm curious if anyone could suggest a decent tube pre new/used for around $300-400, I've been eyeballing a cary slp30 on audiogon, I wouldn't mind a phono, but I have denon table and the built in does a decent enough job imho.Another option I've seen is the jolida JD-5t, the remote is appealing, but I have heard some dubious claims on thier reliability. Any suggestions?
  8. If your computer has a 3 prong plug with a safety ground, then there is a 90% chance of a ground loop hum. The best solution would be adding a ground wire inside the Dx38, but let's wait to see if that is the case. For the first time hooking it up, I would recommend leaving the tweeters disconnected from the amps until you can verify everything else is working. The Dx38 is providing the safety for the HF so make sure it is wired and configured properly. You would have a hard time hurting the LF. Interesting, I am using a asus Xonar ST on rca outs for DAC duty, and I have never noticed hum in the various amp's I've tried, so maybe I'm in the 10 percent, but I suppose we shall see.
  9. Chuck jsut gor back to me and the shipping difference is only like $70, I am in fact going to go with 402's, I leaned twored the 510 becuase I was under the assumption given thier dimensions and weight freight would be like 400+ added to the price difference and push me way over budget.
  10. 1. active, tube pre. 2. I don't have cable/satellite, as I use a HTPC as storage/playback/source outside of vinyl. 3. I was concerned with how much hum will be an issue. So I have pulled the trigger on the dx38, and an adcom for LF, just need to fill out the order forms and fax it into cinequip, then it's onward to Jubtown. Anyone(islander?) have the programing info for the k510 jubscala set up? Thanks -Kevin
  11. The st-70 is highly updated/modded(new powerboard, new driver board, etc) it is very very quiet on my current la scalas,so I hope it would work, yeah I guess I misread coytee, but I have the info for sensativity as well so no biggie.
  12. Thanks coytee, Yeah I have the values(470k for the st-70, and 100k for the adcom) and thanks for the info on the xlr's I may just buy a decent set of xlr to male rca cable off the Bay anyway. To bad about the Dx's if none show up in the near future is the EV-One an option, they seem be be getting near the same price, and they both run EV's same software in so far as I am aware, would the programing differ?
  13. Ok, finally got ahold of Chuck, his emails were going into my spam folder, DOH! I'm waiting to here back on shipping estimate but it looks like budget wise, and I'm going with the k510. I just bought an adcom 545 II for cheap, I plan on using for the LF, and I'll be using my ST70 up top. My next question is what do I need for connecting it all? XLR to rca I suppose, but balanced/unbalanced, or what? Also Coytee you don't happen to have that extra dx38 around/for sale anymore do you, as there is currently none on ebay, I mean I can bide my time but thought I'd throw out some feelers. My game plan for electronics would be Source-Preamp-DX38-St70 to HF/Adcom to LF. Any issues with using a pre before the dx38 for volume control, once the dx is set for the differing impedence values of the two amps?
  14. So I emailed Roy who doesn't have the info about sales, but he copied me over to Chuck@cineequip who hasn't gotten back to me in a few days, any ideas other then sit pretty and wait?
  15. Thanks again for the info coytee, as for the bassbin mod I meant the 10 inch riser and 7" port mod, for digging a little deeper in the lower frequency's. Like the last time we talked I'm still wrestling with the horn issues, the k510 being nice becuase I can infact install it in the motorboard, and the 402 being nice for obvious sonic reasons, but being massively huge. Also as a sidemy listening roomhas the scalasin thier corners, toed in pointing at my couch about 10-12 feet away and the speakers them selves are about 8-9 feet apart from each other, would this closeness influence the horn decision one way or that other? Thanks
  16. Hi everyone I have a pair of La scalas that I 've upgraded over the last year(crites tweet,a/4500), but as money is a bit less tight now I'm giving some serious thought to taking the jub scala plunge but I have a few questions. In so far as I know what is required is a pair of k402 or k510 with drivers from klipsch, a dx38, 2 amps, and the assorted xlr to rca cables to make it work, correct? I have a new to me updated/rebuild st-70 I want to run the HF with, but I'm in a bit of quandry as to what to run the bassbin with, I have heard from various thread higher power SS amp sound better, and that suits me as the project is priecy to begin with, I have a pioneer SA-9500 I could run the bin's off, or I suppose I could look into a decent used pro-amp(hafler/crown/adcom), my question is given 2 different amps how does one insure the volume in HF/LF is matched, does the dx38 control that? Second question whom at klipsch do I need to contact for prices/ordering of the horns and drivers? Final question how do I get ahold of roy's programming for the dx38?Also if I intergate the scalabass mod into the cab is thereany changes needed on the dx38 side? Thanks in advance Kevin
  17. I grew uplistening to my father's KG4's, enjoyed the sound, went through most of Klipsch's pc media speakers and enjoyed those. When I moved out of home I took the KG4's with me. The bug however was in my blood, scoured craigslist for a long time, ended up with my la scala's for $400, and I've been a pretty happy camper since, di the crites 4500 network and tweeter upgrade, and have been playing around with a couple small power tube amps. I ultimately want khorns, but being poor and young means I'll be waiting a long while with my eye on craigs list and garage/estate sales. As it stands I'm still very pleased with my La Scalas.
  18. Well after looking pretty hard at my options, I have went ahead and bought a pair of A/4500hz X-over's and the ct-125's from bob crites. I'm also talking to a friend with more wood working experience then me about starting my bass bin project this weekend, if anyone has specific demensions for that please let me know as far as my under standing of the project goes the ins and the outs are a box the same W/D of the la scala, 10" tall, with a cut in the top the shape of the dogbox, and 2 4"diameter 7.25" long ports of pvc piping, is that about it? Any need for dampening material/fiberfill etc? Then something nice and sticky from the plumnbing department of home depot to give it an air tight seal. Am I on the right track?
  19. Ok so I have now heard the "Mighty Jubilee"™ and my thoughts are ever the more confused. First thanks a bunch for Bob for being so gracious as to let me come over and torture him with my crazy music for an hour or two [H], and thank you Coytee for getting us together on this. My impressions are the following, at moderate listening levels, the most shocking thing to me was how similiar the Jubilees sounded to my la scalas more then anything else, it's heritage dna through and through now I know for a fact you crazy folks out there with them as mains in an all heritage HT setup are very lucky folks indeed. When the volume rises though, they offer as what can only be decribed as MORE, more bass, more coherent highs, better transition from midrange to high(duh 1 driver!). They sound very very good but the problem is this, I feel as if what I was most in love with were the bassbins not the k510, the authority and pressence of those bin's adds a huge sonic difference to the overall presentation of the music. The K510 great, certianly better then my current current speakers, but the differences at least to my ears and unless I was at quite loud volumes was somewhat smaller then I had expected, it is a definate improvement but perhaps not one that I am yet willing to pay in the order of $2000-2600 to enjoy.Thats said I'd love to own a pair of full on jubilee's one day as an entire package they are the best speakers I have personally heard, though I certianly think having a larger listening room then I currently have would be a boon for ownership as well. There are of course some key differences between Bob's setup and other Jub owners, he has a passive network which was built by Roy, he runs SS, I run tubes, I may bring some tubes his way one of these days to test out, though he tells me another expensive diversion in audio is something doesn't need []. Overall I think I'm going to do the networks and bass bin mod to my la scalas, hold onto the rest of my money and see how I feel about all of this, the jubscala sounds like it would be great but ATM it just seems a bit out of reach bang for buck for my taste. Don't let this post discourage any future readers, audio is personal thing and if I where a man of more disposable income it might be an avenue I'd try. I will update with my impressions of my mod's pictures etc as time goes on. Thanks for everyones help.
  20. Nice feedback, thanks for the info. I am still thinking I'll go with most of my current plan, but I'd be liar if the jubscala didn't intrigue me, I hope I can get in touch with Bob and have a listen.
  21. Coytee Man are you trying to get me thrown in the dog house? Yeah I meant the 510, early morning typo. I only live about 15 miles from Bay City. So how does one contact Bob so I can seal my fate? [] already thinking I can build another 6T9 amp and get a nice used DX38 and save up for the rest for the 510s. Torn about this whole thing, I guess I really need to hear them.
  22. Coytee Very interesing points , and sorry for being unclear I simply meant large "Le Cléac’h expansion" style horns, along with a fullrange driver in 2-way operation, on top had been another idea. The idea of the k510 I have to say intrigues me a bit more simply becuase it can be modded to fit inside the topbox of the scalas. Curious as to how different the k402 is for listening then the 501.
  23. I'm way up in michigan and I had ponder going jub scala or maybe even a azura/oris horn setup with a fostex full range, but again then the budget becomes nearly double once you add in active crossover and another amp. I believe any of those options would be amazing but throwing a grand into a set of speakers I picked up on the cheap is already approaching a level of crazy I'm not I nor my signicant other is ready to handle [H] also with either of those optoins worry about my listening room, my spaeker are in the far corners around 7-8 feet apart, toed in and I listen around 10-11 feet back, not sure if going jub or front loaded horn would suit a listening space that small.
  24. Hi Mostly a lurker here but I have a pair of 1988 la scalas, that while I enjoy them, I feel they could be more then they are. I've been doing a lot of reading here and elsewhere on the net about upgrades and I'm thinking of taking the plunge. I have around a grand to spend and I'm thinking about doing some or all of the following. 1. ALK universal DIY kit 2. Fastrac midrange horn 3. Crites tweeters 4.Bass reflex mod Aside from that I plan on doing a little wood putty/sanding and fresh coat of black on my la scalas as they are a bit rough on the outside as well. So basically I'd love to here from some owners, your thoughts on any of the following mods, and what you feel made the most difference. If it helps I am powering them with a Hlly MK III pre and a 6T9 power amp based of the sparetimegizmo schematic. I enjoy them quite a bit as they are but I could certianly enjoy a bit more low end and my highs tend to sound sharp almost harsh at time. With the aging AL networks in them I know i'm not doing myself any favors. Thanks Kevin
  25. So I have been powering my new to me La Scala with the following a Lepai TA2020, a Marantz 2245, and a Pioneer SX-636, my impressions are thus. T-Amp: Abosulute monter on high end clarity, very very clear sound stage, however to me it has a serious bass hole, even on the scala which we already know lack a bit on the bottom. 2245: Much much more bass, very nice mids close to the Lepai, however the highs sound a bit more muted, muddy. SX-636: Not much to say, Im using it at the moment becuase my marantz is down for refreshing and the Lepai does not have a phonostage, it does nothing as well as the other two amps except more bass output then the Lepai. I also have HLLY MK III tube pre-amp in the mail, which will allow me to use my turn table with the Lepai and should give an interesting sound, I will update when it comes in. I bought the Lepai origonally to power my KG4s and I certianly enjoyed it for that I now have of them, my second one is amping line audio from a xbox 360 to the speakers in my arcade cab that I have it hooked up too. I hear they sound much better once you delete the tone controls and replace the cheap stock caps, which may be a project for a rainy day, but for a $17 amp it does a pretty remarkable job.
