“There was a reason, many years ago, why the Engineers put in an extra grid, in the triode Finals tube, and NOW, as of THIS MONTH in 2019, we finally understand, have heard, and know why.
Why, because it allows the Finals tube to play better, than any triode .......in a similarly-excellent amp.”
Jeffrey, you are totally wrong. The engineers were searching for a cheap way to increase audio output power in radios so they could avoid having to use push pull triodes. It was believed that listeners could tolerate a somewhat higher level of distortion when listening to certain types of program material. It is well known that single ended pentodes or tetrodes without negative feedback can only produce low distortion at a fraction of their maximum power output. As I’ve explained before if the distortion of your KT88 amp is low (I would like to see some figures on that) it is because you are not pushing it to more than around 1 watt out. Also, how are you dealing with the issue of the amp’s high output impedance?Maynard

Gorgeous!!! I really like your choice of knobs as well. Can you post a picture of the underside to show your construction technique?

Penny Lane in Liverpool may be renamed. You can research the reasoning behind it. I wonder if the Beatles will be forced to rename their song if that happens.
”Our work to teach the lessons of the Holocaust doesn’t stop.” This is stated at the top of the homepage of US Holocaust Museum in DC. Maybe the museum should be closed permanently because some say that it never happened. I’m sure you get my point.

Relative to censorship, this quote says it all:

The salient point was that “they” (Google, Yahoo news, CNN, and so on) are feeding us their interpretation of the news. It is no longer objective reporting, but rather the points of view they want us to accept. It is becoming increasingly difficult to discern the truth as it usually differs from some agenda. This is very different from the old days when one could tune in to European shortwave outlets like Radio Netherlands, BBC, and Deutche Welle to get some really accurate news information about world events.

Censorship
in Lounge
Thank you Neil for comforting me in my time of need. I will now enjoy a romp in the sunshine with a clear mind.
Seriously, do you agree with the thoughts of your colleague in the above link? How would you try to sway a jury if prosecuting someone in a censorship case?

And this is just beginning.

I will add to this that books and movies which allude to slavery are in the process of being eliminated as well. Tell me that this is not the beginning of what Orwell described in his book 1984.

As noted on the site you linked each tube will offer different performance depending on the amp in which it’s used. Since you say that this is a gift, I recommend giving the person a gift certificate and let them choose the tubes which would best suit their listening preference in their equipment.

Maynard, This evening I finished the power supply enough to power it up. I am measuring 171vdc output. Before I plug into the Ultimate Gem amp, is this voltage in the ballpark of what it should be? I still need to install the output transformers but I am very close to at least thinking this amp is complete.
Pete
The voltage is perfect and will drop to the upper 150s when loaded by the amp. Verify that the bleeder is functioning in the power supply by noting a slow and steady drop after power is removed. When connected to the amp, the tube filaments will discharge the caps very rapidly.

My wife reminded me that Murphy attended protests which directly violated his own executive order which limits the size of outdoor gatherings-
https://patch.com/new-jersey/westfield/nab-gov-murphy-not-distancing-westfield-protest-lawmaker
After protesting with thousands, he raised the limit to 100, and will soon increase it to 250. Tell me that the virus has not become a totally political issue.

Well you paint it as you see it. For me I see something hardly worse than a severe year of flu being used to usurp the constitution. I am a bit surprised at how cavalier people who are comfortable in retirement and secure income are towards those who have to earn a living and also want that same comfort in the future which is being taken away from them. Everything has a cost and the cost to society for this has been WAY to high and it is not being treated as a disease but as a tool to enforce a wish list of big government takeovers of a society that can't, so far anyway, be manipulated into voluntarily giving up the constitution. There is another difference. Some fear just for themselves with no regard for others and want to make other people do things that make them feel safer. Some worry about the country and what is being done and do the costs benefit the nation as a whole or does the cost inflict harm more than good.
I don't think the hypocrisy of the lockdown crowd choosing to violate those lockdown rules because they want too while telling others they don't like or approve of for various reasons to stay shut down or in or face jail or fines is going un-noticed by many who are fed up with this double standard. It is for all or none if it is supposed to be for a defined area like a city or state..
The truth of the matter is only identified at risk groups should have ever been quarantined but even here the lockdown crowd has excelled at bad policy which proves they really never cared about the disease anyway. 72% of wuhan deaths in PA for instance are in nursing homes where they were forced to inoculate patients with wuhan because they had to take wuhan positive patients in. See also NY and NJ. This whole wuhan thing is mainly not about controlling a virulent disease. It is about controlling.
Yes this journalist would agree with you:
https://time.com/5820620/maria-ressa-coronavirus-democracy/
Your point about control is valid . I posted how the NJ governor is limiting the size of outdoor gatherings except if it’s for first amendment issues (ie protesting) in which case there is no limit at all.

I can't even imagine the psychological impact on the mother and child under this scenario:
This whole situation is getting so out of control that it really turns my stomach. My wife just re-read 1984 and sees so many examples of how we're heading into the Orwellian scenario that it is really disturbing.

What is with these pictures of Fauci sucking on his eyeglass temples? Does he then put them down on a conference table with his saliva all over them? It would be nice if the media used pictures of him applying sanitizer to the temples instead. Truly ridiculous! Sadly, there are some who will look at this and emulate his unsanitary behavior.

From nj.com :
He made the announcement at the same time he lifted the stay-at-home order he put in place on March 21. He also increased the number of outdoor gatherings from 25 people to 100 people with “an exception explicitly allowing outdoor gatherings of more than 100 persons for First Amendment-protected outdoor activities.”
Murphy said he anticipates outdoor gatherings “on non-protest and non-religious activities” may be able to grow to 250 people on June 22 and to 500 people on July 3. The latter would permit graduation ceremonies.
So, Murphy (the NJ. Governor) thinks the virus will not affect gatherings of 1000+ protestors, as we had in my town 2 days ago, many of whom were not wearing masks and were standing shoulder to shoulder.

Fauci said, “ We’re going to start manufacturing doses of the vaccines way before we even know that the vaccine works.” So, billions of taxpayer dollars are funding a private company for a product which may be worthless. I wonder how much Fauci will make personally if Moderna’s vaccine is the one we will all be forced to take....

When replacing the QUAD CAN with a new one, I would suggest making the FIRST section only 20 uF ( as seen by the rectifier tube ) , and not 40 uF. as shown stock.
Wire it as : 6X4 / 20 uF / 1000 Ohms / 40 uf - to FINALS / etc. etc, ..................and not vice versa uF amount wise.
I don't think filtering will be substantially effected, either way, ....... but it should be somewhat easier, more conservative, on the 6X4 rectifier tube.
Maynard, or Backfire, what do you gentlemen think??

Jeffrey, you are far too concerned with the gain of the input stage. Amps like this were typically used with ceramic or crystal phono cartridges having an output of as much as a few volts. The feedback network employed reduces the gain to a specified degree. Also, the 1meg input load was usually sufficient to allow the cartridges to function with their own “RIAA equalization.” Why are you trying to redesign this entire amp? Given that the EL84 DC plate current draw won’t vary by more than a couple of milliamps or so between idle and full output, having a 1K filter resistor is of no consequence. While this amp may not meet your standards, it certainly can provide a very enjoyable listening experience for most when using Klipsch speakers.

Sir? I work for a living so the title is not suitable! Yes, you can eliminate the soft start. Its function is to reduce the initial surge to the driver filament, but in actuality it won’t make all that much difference with tube longevity.

Are you saying that the VOM tone control circuit components are contained in a couplate which looks like one in the photo above? My memory is hazy on what VOM used.
Maynard
-
Jeffrey, I like tone control circuitry as it allows the user to tailor the sound to their personal taste. And, the 1 meg input load will make the CD player very happy. Your second thread, in which you advocate a significant circuit change, was not there earlier. It could work. However, eliminating the nfb loop will likely make the amp sound like crap unless running at a fraction of its output power capability. There really is nothing wrong with this amp as originally designed. If anything, a different output transformer would probably yield the greatest improvement, but I don’t advocate doing that either.
One last point, it wouldn’t hurt to put a bleeder resistor of around 240k across the power supply filter network as a safety feature.
Maynard

You can connect the CD player directly to the phono input. The amps should be fully recapped (in particular, all the electrolytic and coupling caps). All resistors should be checked for tolerance and replaced as needed. The power cord should be replaced with a 3 wire type and the primary of the power transformer needs to be fused. Otherwise, I don’t agree with Jeffrey’s recommendations. These are fine amps in their stock form and, while far from being the ultimate, can provide a pleasing experience. I say this as someone who is not particularly fond of the EL84 tube.

It looks fine. Using the separate power supply makes things much more forgiving as there are no AC issues which need to be dealt with in the amp chassis (other than the signal of course).
