How about Model 19 vs Cornscala? I am a Cornwall owner and to buy new crossovers, tweeters, and fastrac horns would cost about the same as selling the Cornwalls and picking up Model 19s. Cant afford either route right now but when the time comes I will likely just upgrade what I already know I like.

Yeah it has to be the software. When the plugins are employed do you lose the volume control in the player? When you bypass the kernel do you also bypass the DAC on the sound card?
The volume contol still works with the wasapi plugin for foobar [for vista/7], but using the foobar volume does cause noticable degradation to the sound. You may try to find a DAC with remote volume, or maybe this: Wavelength audio Proton It supposedly allows you to use the computer's volume without big degradation in sound

Not really sure, I have always used a usb/spdif converter, but I think the plugin would allow you to send the bits to wherever you would like.
These is some things I need to begin researching as my next major component should be an outboard DAC. My ultimate system (for digital playback) will be all PC based, controlled with a keyboard from my listening chair. I have that now but as I said I am running through the Windows mixer and sound card. I will be looking for bit perfect playback with no funny stuff, but I also love the convenience of the remote at my keyboard. So what is the best solution to achieve this? I would love to hear some discussions of this, or pointed to some threads where it has been discussed. I will search the archives.
So presently I guess I have no way to compare the FLAC and ALAC files.

you may want to look into a squeezbox product, when used as a transport (to an external DAC) they are supposed to have better sound than spdif/usb converters or using a soundcard's digital out.- but it may not be as appealing to you since you have a keyboard already at your listening position. I have a bluetooth keyboard at my coffee table and it is great, but my amp is right beside my sofa so the volume problem is not an issue for me. As for sound, my new usb/spdif converter and used DAC cost about double what I spent on a used NAD 541i CD player - and the computer setup sounds much better than the NAD

Hi, if you hear a difference between FLAC and ALAC with different players it is possible the different softwares are causing a different sound.
For bit perfect playback with no funny stuff from the software you can get plugins, not sure if they are available for itunes or WMP, but the foobar player has plugins to bypass windows kernel mixer

Thank you for all the help. These crossovers are from 78 cornwalls, and after finding out here they were original caps I took them to Vancouver Speaker Clinic expecting to need a recap job. They tested the crossovers and said they are still working properly.

Hi, first of all thanks for the advice to keep the finish raw on my Decorator Cornwalls. Today I opened them up to have a look at the crossovers, expecting to find some old leaky worn out looking caps. But much to my suprise the caps were the old metal kind ,but look shiny and new, with no leaking. I bought these corns from the second owner, who thought they had never been recapped, but they just look so shiny compared to most of the pics I have seen of old Klipsch crossovers. The Brand is "Aerovox" Can anyone give an idea of how old they are and if i should still look into recapping anyway?

You guys are kind of telling me what I wanted to hear - I do like the raw look but thought they would look real nice in gloss black with that TV between them. My friend had me curious about the cappachino stain but for the most part I was not interested in staining the wood, it was between gloss black and just leaving them the way they are, and leaving them is easy and foolproof

Hi, I have been lurking here for a couple of months and have enjoyed learning from the many great contributors here. In late Febuary of this year I loaded a pair of Cornwalls into a Wheelchair Taxi for a short trip to their new home. They were purchased to replace my old B&W Matrix 2 s2 in hopes of getting better low volume performance, (To suit my neighbors not myself! ) and for their ability to be snug against a wall. So far I am very happy with them, esp the character bass and forward presentation, and am hoping to impove the sound with new caps and tube amplification soon. My current amp (older Roksan Caspian which is probably way underdriven at my quiet listening level) works quite well, but you guys are pretty adamant about tubes so I should probably at least try them.
Right now I am hoping for some advice or ideas on what to do with the raw finish. They look really nice but since they have a big black TV on a black stand between them I think they may look much better in a darker finish. Gloss Black was my first pick but a friend has suggested a Cappiccino Stain may be nicer. He said the stain would bring out the grain in the birch nicely but I'm not sure if that is a good thing. As you can see in the pics they look quite different from one another. They are not consecutive serial numbers (# 15S198 & 15S143.) Aside from the plywood being way different the woofs have different size dust caps.
Can anybody please give me an idea how much time passes between 55 cornwalls being built in 1978? [^]
Anyway I would rather have these than non decorators with consecutive serial #'s
They are in near mint shape - a bit dry on the sides and there is a but of tape residue from the original owner (Red Green?) where he taped his homeade grills, but aside from that they look new. Speaking of grills I wounder if glueing some grill cloth on the inside of the woofer hole would work and give a nicer look? there is about 1/2" of bare wood around the woofer to work with.
Back to the painting thing, I know somebody with a gun who I could probably get to help me by giving him some of my old gear, but I live in an apartment and it would be a huge pain to pack them a few hundred yards every time a coat is applied. Staining could be done in my apt I guess, but I'm not sure if staining would really be an improvement on leaving them raw.
Also i found a link that claims you can do a nice gloss black paint job without spraying, I would like to try this:
