  1. So Boa.....I think you've answered this before on one of the last DD/DTS posts but what DVD player or receiver do you have that displays the bit rate?

FWIW, and with the prerequisite 'with all due respect' to previous posts that quotes that "the diff is so small most people cannot tell the differences", I certainly can. Talking about the general rule and not the exception, to me DTS sounds consistently better in all elements when all the speakers are set - and can handle - the 'large' or 'full range' setting. Clearer, smoother whith much better use of the surround channels. Put it this way. I have been startled by rear speaker 'gotcha' noises 10 times with DTS for every one DD5.1.

  2. HDBR - Two very good points. Say....if I'm not mistaken, you're the new proud owner of a pair of LS's! And for a song to boot! Intentions?

P.S. - If I may take this time to echo sentiments felt widely on this board - Thanks much for all the detailed inside info. I have enjoyed your posts tremendously.

  3. mdowns,

There are many members that surround themselves in heritage. See 'First post' in this section for a peek at mine. For rears I use '83 Cornwalls. Powered by a brand new Denon 3802. Incidently, what a difference this receiver makes over the Denon 1701 it replaced. So much more warmth. Another step closer to tube sound with all the comforts of SS Smile.gif. DVD-Audio player is on it's way Smile.gifSmile.gif Can't wait!

  4. Ish. Ahhhh yes...corners would be so nice. I had good corners in my previous house. Almost didn't buy this house because of the lack of sufficient corners for my babies. I have my bass bins sealed up with 3/4" ply for now and experience great bass still. The HT room is 20'(W) x 22' front to back. Not optimum, but darn fine none the less. Future plan is to push out the wall that currently has the screen.

Sweet spot is not an issue. These are '54 Khorns. Came with the curved sectoral mid-horn rather than the straight-horn currently in use. What I find is that I have to have the seat all the way to the back of the room to get good jaw-exciting bass due to the WAF with regards to sub placement. The things we do to keep the peace.....

  5. A-HA!!!! Got you HDBR!!!!! You need a screwdriver and NUT DRIVER!! Smile.gif

CnB - As you peer into the dark recesses of the Belle from the rear, you will note that there are 4 nuts along the 'rails' that are along the 'bottom of the top' section. 2 on the right, 2 on the left. After removing the speaker wires from the network as well as the screw that holds the rear mid-horn support to the 'bottom of the top' section, remove these nuts and lift the top section off. The two side pieces as well as the top will come off leaving the 'bottom of the top' section in place. With the sides off, you may now access the screws that hold the 'bottom of the top' section to the mid-speaker collar.

  6. Ish, welcome.

I would second the nod towards the center Belle:

    1.JPG

The screen is 10' x 5' and as you can see, the Belle, with bottom riser removed, fits to a tee. The sound brings tears to your eyes......

  7. All very good suggestions......you get what you pay for....most of the time.

FWIW, if you are on a tighter budget, I have had success by 'lightening the load(s)'. First remove the top section from the bottom section and send in two pieces per speaker. That way, if dropped, the sheer weight difference mightmake a difference. Double box them by fitting cardboard tightly around each section and don't spare the packing tape. Surround the first box with tight fitting styrofoam, preferrably 2" or thicker and fit another cardboard outerbox around this, again very tight. The idea is that the box becomes one with the speaker mitigating the slop factor. Make sure you pack them youself and remember, you cannot 'overpack, overpad or overtape'!

UPS ground is just as iffy as Fed Ex Ground but the two times I sent Belles, I had no problem. UPS is cheaper for the most part....I recall about $26 - $30 for each top section and $50 - $60 for each bottom. Also, insurance is (relatively) cheap. Again, you can't overinsure. Good luck.

  8. Nope Malcolm. The 4401/Mid-T in my Belle as well as the spare pair I have sitting on the 'spares' shelf at home are all labeled 'eight ohms'.....yes, written out like that. I could swear that the ones in my K-horn, the originals, were also 8 ohms because I recall thinking it odd that the woofer and midrange were 16 ohm and the tweet was 8 ohms.

I see you two are forcing me to peel into the Khorns this weekend to verify! They are mounted in the mouth of the mid-horn and thus require me to get in there.

    Stay tuned.

  9. OK George. The tube 'proper' is 9 7/8". By proper I mean the actual length of the cardboard, not inclusive of the 'collars' on both sides. As I peer into the mouth, basically the cardboard tube completly spans from plastic to plastic.

Have you tried moving the unit all over the room to get it to sound better or are you limited to a 'aesthetic spot'? I can move mine literally inches and completely change the sound, feel or loudness. I like this sub. The later KSW 10,12,15's are half the weight. This damn thing weighs 80lbs! A little 'boomy', but with 2 K-horns, 2 CW's and a center Belle, I don't rely too much on the sub. Just have it loud enough to add a little uuumph to explosions and such for movies.

Would like to check out the new RSW series for myself though.

  10. Ah! I thought so. Good deal Jobman. Glad to see that a 'member' got them.

Vallejo or Penn Valley to Bakersfield is probably about the same distance. About 300 miles. I already had my route mentally planned out when they were still at $500 with 5 minutes to go.

  11. Ed - Agreed! You know, it's always a dilemna....send out the alert that a 'steal' is afoot and risk the ensuing bidding frenzy negating the 'good deal', or keep quiet and hope that a fellow board member is watching dilligently. In this case, I had recalled that Mike Lindsey was looking for a heritage deal. I pinged him but he was really looking for some CW's, so I then decided that in any event, Walnut '79 Belles a couple hundred miles from me for under $600 was just too much to pass up. I might have been able to make use of one, as I just purchased a Denon 3802 to replace my 1700, thus affording me the 'excuse' to get a rear center. Even just getting them for cheap like that then spit shining, photographing and marketing for resale on e-bay would in all likelyhood turned a quick grand.

Of course, I would have to go home sometime tonight and face Ms Ballistic. "I have to crawl over these damn speakers just to get to the bathroom" Hmmmm....well, not all the way over....Wink.gif I still haven't fessed to the $300 Forte II's I scored the other day. They are (hopefully) en route. Guess I'll play it off like I got them for $50 or so. Jeez. What a life.

  12. Man-o-man, just saw a pair of Walnut Belles go for $601 on e-bay. Seller had listed them by model number only - "BK-WO". These units sat at $500 up until the end with only one bidder. Talked to the wife an hour or so before and she went ballistic so naturally I had my bid of $551.01 poised and ready. Refreshed with 6 seconds left only to see it jump to $601. I must be getting old. My heart is still pounding.

  13. TPD - Welcome! I too found a decent deal on some CW-BR's. The finish was not poor, but not stellar either. The 'BR' refers to 'Birch - Raw' (unfinished). Usually, these have been stained and finished by one of the previous owners. Such was the case with mine. They were varnished, and the veneer/varnish had started to peel. The rest of my Klipsch ensemble was oiled walnut so I stripped the varnish, restained and replacecd the grillecloth to match my existing walnut motiff. Increase the value? You be the judge! Here are a couple of before/after pics.

Yes, Chris has done a magnificant job restoring his BR Klipschorns. Much harder of a challenge than the CW's. More wood 'real estate' to strip/refurb.

  14. Man, Dean, you're a better citizen than me. A few years back the company I worked for relocated us from Oregon to CA. Paid for everything. House/car while we looked for a house to buy, closing costs, real estate fees, movers, the full giddyup. Or so I thought. When the end of the year rolled around, I found that this was included as 'taxable income'. Also found myself owing Uncle Samuel $5K. I suppose I could have started selling off goodies. In retrospect, that probably would have been the right thing to do. But I couldn't bear to part! So I just ignored the 'dunning'. After a few years of them seizing my yearly returns and rebates, I now owe a painless $300. Phew-ee.

  15. TK - These must be the units that you have for sale on e-bay? They should be almost identical....mirror'd in fact. Grill cloth can be ordered from the 800 Klipsch number. $20/yd (6 ft wide). However, not sure if your color is currently available. The vertical horn CW's are highly sought after. The 'D' in the s/n signifies a 1965 build vintage. I would wager that they fetch well in excess of $600.00, condition dependant, and we have seen them go for over $1100, even one pair that went for $1800. E-bay is a funny place. You just never know.

  16. J-Mon....My '54s do not have wrap around grilles. Evidently, back then Klipsch did some custom builds outside the normal production runs. All the driver components within my speakers have the 'Approved by PWK' labels affixed and there are several Klipsch and Associates labels on both the top and bottom sections. The networks are the K-500-5000's complete with metal Klipsch and Associates plates. Originally equipped with cane grilles, these have been replaced with Klipsch black cloth. The original Klipsch emblems have been removed as I did not like the looks of them. (Kind of a clear 'plexiglass' looking affair with 'Klipschorn' etched in cursive).

This certainly does not appear to be the case with the ones on e-bay. I sent the seller an e-mail requesting s/n's, year mfg'd info and more importantly, internal components. Haven't received a response and I suspect I will not.

  17. C'n B - Whichever route you decide to pursue....or more likely, whichever route presents itself to you....I would certainly strive for a sonic 'match' above all else. I think you all know by now my vote goes towards the Trusonics. They can be found, I've purchased 3 on e-bay in the last year and didn't pay more than $60 for any single unit. Saw a very nice pair of 'Tru-Blues' with a 'buy it now' of $200 a few months back. Didn't sell. Also purchased 2 EV15 WK's in the last year for a song....the seller spelled 'Electro-voice' 'electric voice' and listed them in the hobby catagory. Just chanced upon them moments before they closed and before I could bid. Seller wanted $50 for the pair and got no bidders. So I e-mailed him and had them in hand a week later.

Have tried all these as well as several iterations of K33's in my test Belle. My ears and senses prefer the Trusonics.
