  1. Consumer reports just rated the klipsch synergy sb3 system 18th out of 18. They place the speakers in an anechoic chamber on a rotating platform and send it test signals. They say even though this isn't a typical room it represents the actual frequency responce of the speaker. They also admit this doesn't tell how each speaker will sound in a particular room but overall flatter response will result in better sound in more rooms. My friend is wearing me out with this. He says the speaker that reproduces the sound that is feed to it best is the better speaker. I say that you have to actually have to listen to evaluate how a speaker sounds. He says bla, bla, bla, I'm just making excuses. If what goes in is what comes out that is how to tell accuracy. I need help.
  2. I was told in the home theater section this was a question for you. I have a theater room with 2 khorns and 3 lascalas. The room is about 14 wide and 21 deep. I have the khorns on the front wall which is 14 wide and a lascala in the wall behind an acoustically transparent screen. I have it raised so the tweeter level is even with the khorns. I have the rears on wooden boxes in the rear corners toed in. I have the boxes stained to match and they raise the rears to the same tweeter height. My dilema is that I don't have any room in the front for subs. My screen is about 18 inches from the floor and 18 inches from each khorn. I was wondering how it would work to use 2 denali in the rear corners. They have the same footprint as the lascalas so I could sit the lascalas on top of them. This would eliminate my boxes and alow the subs corner placement. What do you think?
  3. Thanks for all the feedback. Here's another question. Due to my room I am running my surrounds in the rear corners on stands to bring the tweeters up even with the khorns. I am leaning towards the denali. It is 24x24, almost the exact size of a lascala. I could place them in the rear corners and put the lascalas on them. I don't have front corners due to the khorns. My screen is about 18 inches from the floor and 18 inches from the khorns on each side, so front placement is impossible. What do you guys think about this idea?
  4. I sure don't have an unlimited budget but I would rather get 2 real good subs, one sub at a time, than two lesser subs at once. Does anything compare to the Denali in that price range?
  5. I have 2 khorns and 3 lascalas in a home theater. What sub would keep up with these 5 speakers at high volumes. I don't want to be maxed out on my sub while my other speakers are coasting. I realize it may take 2 but what would you consider first?
  6. I have 2 khorns and 3 lascalas. My reciever is a Harmon Kardon 7200. I have all 5 speakers crossed over at 60hz. I have 2 ksw 15's that I hope to upgrade soon. When I set everything to large, only the lfe goes to the subs. When I set to small at 60hz everything below 60 goes to the sub. I know these subs are not a match for the khorns but I am really surprised how much more bass I have this way. I have a s&v tune up disc. Using a sp meter and the low frequency sweep it is also much smoother this way. If I set the crossover lower than this I get a hole even with the khorns. I thought the khorns were good for 35hz.
  7. I have 2 khorns and 3 lascalas. My room is 14 wide and 21 long. I have my khorns in the front corners and the center lascala in the wall behind an acoustically transparent screen. I have it raised to where the tweeters are even across the front. I also built boxes for the rear lascalas so all 5 speakers are even. My problem is I can only use the rears on the back wall. I have 2 doors on the left side wall. One is about 24 inches from the rear corner and I have another door about 3 more feet toward the front. Should I put the rears in the rear corners angled toward the center or on the back wall pointing straight ahead. Also is this the best height to use or should they be raised more and angled down. I Recently purchased a Harmon Kardon 7200. The front soundstage is incredible but I don't seem to getting much from thr rear. I sit about 8 feet from the back wall.
  8. I have found the 7200 for $1075 delivered. I have 3 lascalas and 2 khorns in my home theater. I am thinking about ordering today, what do you think?
  9. Does anyone have this reciever, and how do you like it? Also does it do 5ch stereo?
  10. I have a Sony HDTV satellite reciever and dvd player which I am running through a Sony reciever with component video.I am then feeding a projector. The reciever says it has 80mhz component switching. I am wanting to buy a Denon reciever to replace the Sony. The Denon has 100mhz component switching. I was wondering if this Is going to cause any issues.
  11. I subscribe to HTT mag and they lately reviewed a Denon reciever. It was rated at 90wpc which it did in 2ch but driving 5 channels could only manage about 35. HTT also tested a HK which was rated 50wpc but did almost 90.Also NAD claims they deliver rated power RMS while driving all speakers. Which of these are the best choice? I am concerned about the power supplies in the Denons. I would like a true 100wpc so Is the NAD or HK a better choice?
  12. I have 2 Klipschorns and 3 Lascalas in my theater room. I had a yamaha pro logic reciever. I finished my theater room and bought a cheap sony dolby digital reciever just to get by until I could afford somenthing better. I hate the sony and can't stand it any more. It's rated at 100x6( yeah right}. It weighs about 1/3 as much as the yamaha. I have never liked music through any of the surround modes (pro logic ll, neo6 etc.), They seem to waste the rears. I would always connect my lascalas to the B terminals. I am wondering if anyone makes a reciever that does the 5ch stereo anymore. I know Denon use to make some but I haven't seen this option listed on any of the new ones. I do not have easy acess to the rear of the components now so I can't use the B terminals. I would like a true 80 watts or more per ch also. Anyone advice would be greately appreciated.
  13. Thanks, I think the pro logic is partially responsible. I also think the reciever is weaker than I'm use to. I definately need something better. I was also wondering how to post pictures on this board. I would like to put some up.One last thing, My room is 22x14 and I only have room in the rear for the lascalas. I set about 13 feet from the screen. I currently have the lascalas in the corners toed in and on the floor. Should they be on stands to raise them to the fronts level and turned straight or what?
  14. I had been seriously considering a yamaha projector that the local home theater speciality store pushed. I was close to buying when I happened to stop at a computer store to get some disc. They had a projector playing that surprised me by how good it looked. I asked the rep there and he said people are willing to pay more at a speciality store because they expect to. Looking at the specs the computer store projector is much better. 2000 lumens vs 700. Resolution is 1278x720 vs 800x600. It supports all formats and cost about 1/3 the price. I bought a BenQ DX660 for about 2000 and the performance is fantastic. I have an 111 inch screen with a lascala behind it. I have a HDTV satellite reciever and can't imagine having better video quality. This projector is 4x3 ratio. After seeing how much more is availible in 4x3 I'm glad I got it. 16x9 material looks great too.
  15. I am finally through building my home theater. I have 3 lascalas and 2 khorns. I have a front projector with the center lascala in the wall behind an acoustic screen. I had an older Yamaha pro logic reciever and wanted to upgrade. I wasn't able to afford the reciever I wanted, so temporarly I bought a cheap sony dolby digital reciever to get me by. It is rated at 100wx6 but when in pro logic ll it doesn't seem very powerful. I think when I switch to 2 channel it seems louder. Is this a result of pro logic ll or is this amp not really 100x6? My yamaha is 85x4 but seems more powerful.
  16. I have a home theater room which is 21x14. I have Khorns for the for left and right. I hane Lascalas for center and rear. I think my room is only big enough for 5.1. I have the center Lascala inside the front wall. I removed the grill and raised it so the tweeter is the same height as the fronts. It has a Da Lite acoustic screen in front of it. I am wondering what to do with the rears. They are on the floor in the corners toed in now. Should they be raised on stands to mach the fronts. Is rear or side rear placement better. I have a 111 inch screen and set about 8 feet from thr rear of the room.
  17. Sorry i know this is hard to understand but I dont know how to draw it on this forum. Basically the back wall is wider than the front. The right wall is straight and the left wall comes into the room about 3 feet at the front about half way down.
  18. I am builbing a theater room in a basement. Heres the problem. I have 3 lascalas and 2 khorns. I am going to build a wall 3 feet out in front and put the center lascala in the wall at the same height as the k horns. The room is 24 foot long. You enter on the long wall in the center. The other long wall is blank. When you enter the wall to the left is 14 foot long, The wall to the right is 17 foot long. The room is L shaped. The 17 foot long wall has a 9 foot long window centered in it. Im putting the khorn and center on the 14 foot long wall. If I put the rear lascalas at the same width as the khorns, and raise them to the same height, then one is in front of the window. The bottom of the window is about 4 inches lower than the top of the khorns. If I put thr rears in the corner to the sides of the window then they are off center. If this makes any sense then how should they be positioned and how should they be aimed? I was going to build cabinets for the rears.
  19. Anyone remember years ago, when lots of audiophiles were marking around the outside edge of cds They were using some kind of green marker. They claimed the sonic benifits were incredible. I remember Stereo Review did a test. They fed the digital output into a computer and compared the cds bit by bit.there was no difference. People still swore they could hear a difference. Too bad comparing cds bit by bit is possible, look at all the fun we missed out on.
  20. Hey ,great replies. Tempting offer on the wires and kenmore, but I think Ill try and find one of these golden ear guys and make a trade. I bet I could get a pair of klipschorns for the lascalas and the wire. The scalas and wire probably sounds better anyway. But honestly, this is a great forum. I read it often but rarely respond. The things we debate about, really add a lot to the hobby. Take for instance sports. If everyone liked one team ,the biggest part of the fun would be gone. If everyone had klipsch, who could we impress with our systems. Oh, by the way, I have a 1 year old set of lascalas and some incredibly, open dynamic, speaker cable that I would like to trade for a set of klipschorns.
  21. I have an adcom GFA-585 limited stereo amp, GTP 502 pre amp, silver sonic cables. Also have a set of klipschorns, and lascalas. We listned to everything from Bach to Zapp. Also to change the subject. In 1980 I didnt know a thing about audio. I was trying to decide between Bose 9901 and a large set of cerwin vega. I went to circit city every week to compare. I happened to stop by a speciality shop to look around. I couldnt help but notice a funny looking little speaker on a rotating stand. It sounded great. I asked the guy at circit city If he would allow me to bring those in to his store and compare to his speakers. He said he couldnt. I asked the guy at the other store if I could bring in the Bose or Cerwin vega and compare to his and he said sure. So I bought those funny little speakers that day. They were Klipsch Heresys. They have a trade in policy and I traded up every year until I got the Klipschorns. Then I started orer with some 1.1s and am now up to lascalas. So you can see Ive been at this for a while I have owned lots of Klipsch speakers and know many of them well. I can say if it werent for that one guy saying I could compare speakers in his store I would probably have a different hobby. Speakers make a huge difference ,Wires dont.
  22. Several of my friends, and myself have been debating about speaker cables for years now. I have a premium set and was cleaning out some junk and found a very cheap roll of wal-mart wire. So I wired the cheap stuff to B switch on my amp and connected the other end to my speakers. I know some may think this dangerous to the amp but A&B are connected to the same output they just allow you to switch between pairs of speakers. When A is pushed electrons only flow through The (good) wire, And when B is pushed it only flows through the cheap wire, also when both are pushed it flows through both. Some may say this taints the results, but anyone who knows fundamental electronics or even electricity also knows when no load is present (a or B switched off) that wire carries no current or signal. My friends all agreed that this was a fair test, so with each sitting in the sweet spot one at a time the results were amazing. There was six of us The only one who believed there would be no difference is an electronics professor at a local college.Switching from A to B not one of us could tell witch was being used. Actually with the amp hid , we could not even tell when they were switched, when for example it went from A on to both on to A off etc. The only thing that tipped off a switch was the quiet during the switch when both were off. Not only could we not tell A from B, we couldnt tell A or B from A & B.To say we were surprised was an understatement. Everyone double checked my wires because something had to be wrong. These cable manufactures are making a killing and ripping us off..............
  23. This is my first time on the forum but I think its great. My wife and I bought a house about 3 years ago. It's a split foyer with a nice size den. I made a deal with her that she could decorate any way she wanted but the den was mine.so after we moved in I put all my speakers down stairs. After about 2 weeks it started to rain and we could hear water running inside the walls. Pulled everything out in time but my den flooded. So I had to put everything in the living room,2 klipschorns,3 lascalas, 46 inch big screen, very crowded. To make a long story short, went to court had entire foundation dug up and rebuilt. Now I have a completely unfinished den to builb how I want. Sorry for all the details, thought it might be interesting. So here finally is my question. I was thinking of building a wall deep enough for my front lascala to be sunk into. I was thinking of building a shelf to sit it on so the top would be level with the k-horns. I am going to get a projector and acoustically transparent screen to cover the center lascalla. The k-horns will be in front of this wall to form a horse shoe. Does this make sense? I also wanted to build shelves for the rear lascalas, but should they face straight ahead or be toed toward the listener? The room is 16 wide by 26 long Any help would be appreciated . Any other suggestions or advice?
