  1.

So how is the money in hockey these days? They paid a lot of money to get Howe to play with his sons in Houston on that alternate league team, I don't know if that was the first million dollar contract.

When Gretzky came to LA I remember that was a whole lot of money for a hockey player at the time.

Are the salaries for hockey players any better as compared to baseball, football and basketball?

I believe the top paid NFL, NBA and MLB players out earn the top NFL players but all top NHL players like Crosby make multi-millions annually.

I thought Gordie Howe left the NHL for Winterpeg, MB?

He retired from Red Wings. Hated what he was doing for the Red Wings in retirement and then decided to come back with a chance to play with his son in a startup league that eventually merged with the NHL.

  2. "Fans of the Nashville Predators have modified the octopus-throwing tradition of Detroit Red Wings fans to show their support: on occasion, a fan will throw a catfish onto the ice. The Tennessean newspaper in Nashville cites the first instance of this on October 30, 2003.[42] At least four catfish were thrown onto the ice after the first Nashville goal on November 13, 2003." - Wikipaedia

As a Nashvillian and a Preds fan I would like to point out that when the team was awarded the franchise on a provisional basis in 97 it had to sell 12,000 season tickets to make it official. Detroit transplants working in Spring Hill just south of Nashville pushed us over the finish line so Nashville got the team. First several times we played the Wings the arena was half red, but each time the red diminished. We always looked at the Wings as our big brothers in hockey. It was several years later that the first catfish appeared during a Preds Wings game and the tradition was born.

  3. After considering an Apt Holman pre-amp and getting good feedback here, I ran into the Carver C4000 and bit on the Autocorrelator and Peak Unlimiter features.

Those features work well in my opinion and have increased my enjoyment of my R2R listening.  It also helps with records, but it makes good R2R tapes stunning.

One tape that really shines using both gadgets is ELP Tarkus that I bought new and sealed 7 1/2 ips factory prerecorded. It was pretty good without any processing, but with the processing its sonic impact is enhanced by the expander with no "breathing" effects. The Autocorrelator suppresses noise very well while not reducing the sonics of quiet passages.

I have run into a number of 2nd generation protection or safety copies on 2 track 15 ips that were taken from master tapes used in radio stations. (This is unverified.)

My favorites so far are Genesis - Trick of the Tail and Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

I have ripped to digital both of these using the processing features of the C4000 and made regular ole' CDs to play for my tech on his system. He agrees with my assessment and noticed the lack of the irritation he often gets from playing CDs.

There are other features of the C4000 such as the infamous Sonic Hologram Generator and time delay with rear speakers driven directly by the pre-amp that I may never explore fully, but I have to wonder how well Bob Carver did implementing those features.

  4. Thanks everyone! Helps a lot. I have joined the tapeheads forum and it has been helpful! I will send jay a pm for more follow up. DJK : your answer on the test tones was great - and so obvious. Proof of the reading I need to do!

    Another quick one...

I purchased a pre recorded tape from an italian company. They tapes come tail out meaning that I need to put the tape on the right spindle and I believe rewind it to the take up reel in order to play. Are the ones from the tape project that way as well?

    Thx

    Josh

    Josh,

I have recently taken the plunge as well. I also bought an Otari MX 5050 II2. It's being serviced now but my Revox B77 has enabled me to start collecting old pre-recorded titles. Some are 50 years old! The quality is all over the place but about a third of the 30 I have acquired have been really eye-opening good.  I am using my Pure Vinyl setup to listen most of the time as my primary speakers rely on an active crossover control in Pure Vinyl. But I also have an all analog setup with KEF speakers, while they lack in low end, the imaging is stunning.  Always looking for titles that either not found in the digital domain or if they do the mastering for CD was not too great.

How are things going for you since you started this thread?

    Brad

  5. I also pick up DBX encoded albums as I have an old DBX decoder and maybe a couple of dozen albums.
I too have several DBX records with a decoder.  I find the results to be pretty good, but R2R is blowing me away.  Several of the tapes I have gotten off of Epray have been pretty darn good.  What I have been looking for are titles not in the digital domain. Classical titles that didn't fit on LPs are intriguing.
  6. Ok, So I am convinced that the problem with the download from rollofone is simply EQ. I use Pro EQ2 as a plugin with my PureMusic audio engine and it has a feature for using a sidechain to auto match to a reference.  So just for grins I was going to try that and use my high def download of the same song as the reference and see if I could EQ rollofone's mastered version to sound the same. But PM isn't a DAW and I can't see where to configure a sidechain input. BTW Pro EQ2 lets you use different places in the song for the automatch so I put the two versions into one song.

Of course the reason for doing this is to see if I want to try some of his other files with my EQ fix to see if they are better.  And before the PROs start lecturing me, I do understand that each mastering may use a different EQ. But at least its a fix for the very nice mix of jazz songs on rollofone's http://www.rollofone.com/?product=jazz-poll-winners which is what I downloaded.

    Thanks for any thoughts.

  7. This is also true without having to guess the relative levels of higher order harmonics above third order, but assuming that the original music track is fairly clean up to 4-7 kHz...which is the real question.  I've heard many, many tracks that don't meet that criterion.
He is pretty picky as to the acceptance of source materials. He explained that many tapes the left channel is damaged and too bad for the tape to be used.
  8. Understood, never heard the Forte 2's, maybe the updated midrange would help. But it just seems my Forte's have a blanket over them compared to the Heresy.

I had the Forte IIs with the Crites upgrades and found that in a bigger room say larger than roughly 20 x 20 or so the Forte opened up and was exceptional. In a small room I found the Heresy to be more open and clear.  Getting the Forte IIs off the wall the right amount helped a great deal so a small room just wasn't practical.
