  1. I've got a Philips 7851 receiver that I'd part with. I recently cleaned all controls with deoxit and a t is currently powering my Forte 2's quite nicely. Really nice tuner. Fully functional and all lights light up. Have original manual. I'll take a 100 bucks for it. PM if your interested. I'm in Little Rock.

  2. I couldn't detect any difference at all. At the time I was using a Lenco L75 with the Atp-12t, a diy sut using beyerdynamics transformers into a NOS Valves restored Scott 299C mated to Altec Lansing Model 18's. That system should have revealed any differences.

Just today I pulled out the Lenco and hooked it up to my McIntosh MX113/MC2100 combo, feeding Forte 2's and the combo freakin rocks! Everything from Pink Floyd to Flaming Lips to Kyuss to Gatemouth, it all sounds great.

I think the story may be different when mating the 103 to tonearms that may not be a perfect match. I have a technics 1200 and a JVC ql-y66f with straight tonearm that I could put the cartridge on to try to compare but it just works so well with the Lenco/ATP-12t combo, I haven't found a reason to go through the effort.

  3. I did the mod on my 103 using an aluminum body from a ebay seller, similar to what Zu uses. The procedure is delicate but not hard to perform. I also epoxied the cartridge into the body. I really could not tell any difference in sound quality with the mod. The cartridge is considerably heavier now and would probably work/sound better on a medium mass arm than a stock unit. I am using it on a Audio Technica atp-12t broadcast arm so the cartridge was a good match to begin with.

  4. In my case two changes really helped even out my Forte 2's frequency response.

    1. Changed amplification from Musical Fidelity A5 integrated to McIntosh MX113/MC2100 combo. The Mc combo really brings out the bass in these speakers. As many of us have learned over and over, system synergy is key.

    2. Replaced caps in crossovers. Initially, I only replaced the mids because I hadn't decided on the other caps yet. A fresh capacitor on the mid just made the problem worse. After replacing the remaining caps the speakers are now very even handed and I am happy with the balance. I used now Russian k75 caps for the mid, sonicap gen 1's for the tweeter, and a Mundorf electrolytic for the woofer.

  5. I'm still using the factory crossovers at this point. I began replacing capacitors today starting with a 1.5uf Russian k75-10 hybrid pio on the squaker. I am hoping to smooth out the mids a little. I will replace the other caps soon, just wanted to try one at a time to get a good idea what each is contributing. I will probably build new boards to have room for the new caps so I may get Bob's autoformer at the same time and try moving the taps. I think there is huge potential in the forte's with some minor modifications.
