  1. I guess I have magical cables and a magical receiver then...lucky me!

Or really un magical ones [:D]

Hook up the hdmi go to the audio menu on the blu ray movie

as the movie is playing and go from standard Dolby digital to an HD format (true hd/dts hd

    ma/ uncompressed lossless).

A standard Dolby digital 5.1 track on a blu ray (even

smaller on dvd) maxes out @ 640kps vs PCM uncompressed lossless HD @ 6900kps

(that’s over ten times bigger!) and DTSMA HD has the size ability to hit almost

10,000kps but most movies max out around 5000-7000kps (still 10times bigger

than standard). That’s like 100horsepower vs 1,000 night and day.

  2. I’m guessing lagolas is super excited to get his new

speakers and he wants to see some good video shots of them in action. I’m guessing

that the sound he hears probably won’t really matter contrary to what he says. This

would have probably gone over better if he had just said that and not that he

wanted to hear them. Just my guess I could be wrong. But when I ordered mine I looked

all over the internet that week online looking at pics and reviews.

  3. Audible Nectar you be fine to watch and listen to blu rays

in standard Dolby digital sound and you will have as good of sound as you have

now with dvds or possible a tad better. When

I got blu ray I had an older avr and lived with it for years tell I finally

upgraded. Not a big deal because you won’t know what you’re missing tell you finally

upgrade to a new avr down the road. So it’s something to look forward to. [:)]

  4. The sound quality that you get from optical, digital coaxial, and HDMI are exactly the same. HDMI gives you the convenience of only using one cable, but in most cases, the picture quality is better if you run the HDMI directly from your bluray player to your tv and bypass your receiver or pre/pro completely. You also have less av sync issues that way.

That is incorrect. Using HDMI or 5.1/7.1 analog discrete outputs is the only way to output HD audio signals. Optical or coaxial will not pass Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, etc.

+1 it’s not the same at all. You can use optical and get the

basic Dolby digital 5.1 like with dvds but you won’t get the HD sound formats using

optical. The difference is very noticeable.

  5. "As you say it's to much demanding"? Ahhh no... That's not how I would say it. Not at all. Also your apology holds little weight when followed by sarcasm. Just saying...

Its not sarcasm, i'm just trying to keep things "light" and not get dragged in to an argument, maybe it wasn't a good phrase. well...anyway hope you get what i mean. and back to the main issue: it would be nice if someone or some people would go trough the trouble of making a small video to get a grasp of the RF 7ii capabilities.

Look again on YouTube I have seen them on there playing. But
all you are hearing is your pc speakers so it’s pointless from a sound perspective.
Best advice I can give is if you want to hear the speakers first and can’t demo
the rf-7ii then buy speakers you can demo. The rf-7ii isn’t the only good
speaker to buy. And if you can’t find a good speaker to demo then take a
    chance.

  6. Hey there PSG.....

Well, you have a rather 'raw' looking theater too, but that makes it interesting Smile

Ok, the deal with the 6.1 is........................If the chosen soundtrack for 6.1 is Dolby........then, it is MATRIXED between the rear left and right... GARBAGE! (sorry, had to get that out......Wink )

If you have selected DTS 6.1 then your rear center is DESCRETE YesBig Smile --- I learned this only a few months ago and was amazed to find this out, most persons (like myself) are unawhere unless they have read the fine print !

To continue, it was basically Dolby systems that started this whole thing, yet, they chinced out with their 6.1 audio spec.

As I have mentioned many times...........I never use ANY mode that has with the word 'Pro' in it when it comes to Dolby systems... 5.1 - 6.1 and 7.1 should always be descrete audio channels, I say to anyone reading, why use a dated 'pro logic' type mode with today's great equipment and high resolution recorded audio that is well beyond that? Is there any wonder why MORE BluRays are recorded in DTS exculsively?? Why is this ?

    Food for thought...

    ............Gary

Go with what you like of course. But to me it’s an upgrade from the standard

5.1 that I had before. Even if its matrix.

Why would you call it garbage? Pro

IIx isn’t that old by the way. And if I’m right when you use pro IIx it doesn’t

replace the other audio format it only sends the surround information to the

rear speakers nothing more is changed. It’s

still 100% the full lossless track. And as you know (looking at your gear)

older doesn’t always mean worse. [:D]

A newer Dolby Pro Logic IIx system is also now available, which can take two-channel stereo, Dolby Surround (sometimes called Dolby Stereo Surround) and Dolby Digital 5.1 source material and up-convert it to 6.1 or 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Pro Logic IIx also takes signals intended for Dolby Pro Logic II and up-converts them to a 6.1 or 7.1 channel surround sound.

Only when you are taking a 2 channel signal does it work

like the old Dolby pro II

  7. Hello there PSG....

Nice and clean setup there!, but I am most curious, what in your 'software' collection do you have that will run your system in true 6.1?

I am sure you know about the center rear being different if your in Dolby vs. DTS (yeah, it really performes differently depending on which!)

I have only ONE movie in 6.1 (hard to find this stuff, it was such a seemingly short lived audio scheme)...

    Anyway, just curious Wink

    ............Gary

Are you talking about DTS-HD MA 5.1 ES? Or true 6.1? The new

star wars saga on blu ray is true 6.1 (DTS-HD MA 6.1) and it’s amazing.

  8. OK, I've always been a proponent for 5.1 being more than adequate for HT. Afterall, how many movies do I own that are encoded with more channels than this? Well, the number is very very low. I also have been a proponent for monopoles in the rear corners. I picked up a set of KSP-S6 along with some KLF 30 and C7. I figured I better at least try it. I plan to mount the S6s at the sides of the listening area about 6' off the ground. I will keep the KG1s in the top rear corners of the room (about 8-9' back from the side speakers) for the rear surrounds. My amp already supports 7.1, but what really happens on those 4 speakers when you play a 5.1 source? Do the rear surrounds and rear back speakers simply play the same information?

I'm surprised by the number of new Blu-Ray titles that still are not encoded for more than 5.1.

I just changed to 7.1 from 5.1 a few weeks ago and I love

it. I set my avr to AFD auto and it reads the highest possible source that way.

So if its 7.1 dts HD ma it will run that. (I use a ps3 so it’s just pcm). I power the new speakers with my avr and the

rest with a separate amp. The rears are always on with this set up unless it’s

just a standard 2 channel source like some crapy cable tv show. I read my manual

on this topic and I’m still not 100% sure why they are always on for standard

5.1. I asked your question before I upgraded and I got mixed answers. Some people

said that they are only on with 5.1 ES (basically 6.1), 6.1 and 7.1. Some said

you have to set your avr to pro IIx. I don’t set my avr to pro IIx and still

get 7.1 with all channels. It’s possible that the AFD auto that I use uses pro

IIx on 5.1 because my avr does have it I just don’t actually turn it on. So I’m guessing it will have a lot to do with

your avr and what settings you use.

  9. Reference head, what are your thoughts on the RW-12d vs your new subs?

Well the new ones are better but it’s not really a fair
fight. They have almost 3 times bigger boxes (probably more like 2 times but
they are monsters). I did like the RW-12d for the most part it didn’t hit 20 Hz
or anything but it put out a lot of bass and was still somewhat small in size. My
only complaint was some port noise on some of the hard bass parts. I would probably still have them if that one didn’t
break (I got a great deal on them). Here is a pic of them with my old speakers
when I first moved into my house. I think
I was only in the house a few weeks.

  10. Rippyman, how does the marantz sound with the klipsch? Ive got the same front 3 and was also looking at the sr7005. Looks great by the way!

Sounds amazing, but I haven't really enjoyed it yet. The couch I ordered arrived and ended up not fitting into my basement, so I've been forced to order a new setup.

It will take another 14 weeks before it shows up...ugh!

Even though I've sat down there with just a chair and listened to music and watched clips from my favorite movies, I haven't really enjoyed it yet.

On a side note, the two subs you see in the photos are the Klipsch SW-112's and I'm not that impressed with them. It may be that the bass is being lost by escaping the room, but I won't know until the room is furnished and complete. This saturday I'm hooking up a James Cinema 15 to compare for giggles.

I plan on doing a bunch of wall treatments and along with the new couch I'm hoping it will contain the sound a lot better.

Is the floor concrete? It’s way harder to get good bass on top of

concrete. Subs on normal floors shake

the whole floor and that shakes your chair and you. But in a basement setup you’re

going to have to get creative a little bit. Some people are happy with the bass

they get but it took me 3 subs before I got the bass I was looking for on

concrete. And one is very close to the

LP. I know you probably don’t want to run wires because you did the wires

behind the walls. You can get subs that are wireless. A few good brands for

that are Rhythmic subs and I think HSU subs make a good wireless sub. Just looking

at your pics I would look to put one behind the couch (I’m guessing at where you’re

putting the couch) similar to how I have mine. I know it’s different but look to

the right of this pic behind the couch. I have one sub there then two up front

like you. The subs up front are bigger

than yours but I use to have this same set up with 2 klipsch rw-12d subs up front

and it was plenty of bass. I changed because the port broke loose on one and they

dented the cone trying to fix it. By that time that model was discounted and

ultimate electronics was going bankrupt so they just gave me my money back. I used

the money to buy a SVS sub and then it looked funny having one small sub and

one huge sub upfront. I sold the other one and bought

    the Epik Empire.

Also your room is a lot bigger than mine so it might take

bigger subs to pressurize that room with bass.

Also just a suggestion I would put your spikes on your rf-7

so the feet don’t sink in. (unless you like it)

  11. So I know this thread was started 4 years ago. I used to have a huge collection of DVD-A but unfortunately sold them all. I was thinking about buying them back since I still have the player (Panny DVD-RP91K), so I looked on eBay for some of my old favorites. Holy Crap! Fleetwood Mac Rumours $85, Eagles Hotel California $250! R.E.M. $110, Crowded House $40.

At those prices, I think I'll maybe check back in 4 more years.

I noticed some are cheap like 20 bucks or less and some are really

spendy. Like brother in arms is 20 bucks on amazon sacd.

  12. I would also take rb-75. They have better drivers and materials used in them. Rf-3 is nice and probably looks cooler set up as surrounds but that rb-75 horn is the …t. Stick out tongue

They have all that, but the horn in the RF-3 is no slouch. I sit 3.5 ft from my front sub (side wall...lousy location) 4ft from my surrounds and 7 ft from my rear sub and in this configuration I missed the mid bass more than the upper end when using the RB-75s....Again, see my post above and know I won't be selling either pair of RB-75s I own but check E-Bay upon my death. Wink

I hear yea, you know you’re set up way better than we do. I used to have the rf-82 and loved them so if the

rf-3 sounds anything like them I agree they are great HT speakers.

  13. personally, i dont prefer the sound of the rf-7's in stereo mode but i would say i am a die hard lover when it comes to home theater surround with the 7's included. The rf-7's perform beautifully with music at high volumes and they really keep up with it. In that respect i think the rf-7's are great. At lower-moderate listening volums where you just want to sit an relax, i just dont feel the warmth and relaxtion as i do with my heresys or my rf-5's which i miss so much. I have tested with quality sources and its clean and clear but lacks the body i like at those lower volumes i was talking about.

Check to make sure your subs are matched on both sides so you arent getting a delay reaction of some sort as well. I also turned up the gain on the lower end with my emo pro and that helped give more body at lower volumes. I dont use auddesy or in this case emoq, i should try it but i usually like to mess with things myself.

    just my .02

Great post sub, 2 channel music needs its own set up imo. I know

some think eq is like putting sauce on a good steak. But every room and person

has different taste. I still go back to what I said before and would recommend getting

a standalone eq. set the avr to direct stereo and run the eq between the avr

and the emo. That would give it a finer warmer

sound that works so much better for 2 channel music.

  14. I will admit replacing my rear RS-7s with RB-75s was pretty much a lateral move but I much prefer my RF-3 towers to both the RS-7s and RB-75s as my side surrounds.

Are you serious? RF-3 over RB-75? If that's the case, I'll take them off your hands and give you a pair of RF-3s right now! Not Kidding. If you run them all with a sub and use the "small" setting, I don't see how this is possible.

I would also take rb-75. They have better drivers and materials

used in them. Rf-3 is nice and probably looks cooler set up as surrounds but

    that rb-75 horn is the …t. [:P]

  15. I'm asking because I have a bit of a dilemma. I am upgrading my system from a 6.1 setup to 7.1. I currently have RB-35's in the front, a RC-35, three RS-35's for surround, and a HSU sub. Tomorrow I'm picking up a set of used RF-35's which I will use as my mains. He's also basically throwing in another RS-35 which will give me four of them.

So...if barely any sound goes to the rear, won't the RS-35's handle it fine? If so, I'll sell my RB-35's and maybe put the money towards a new receiver to replace my aging HK 630.

When I’m running just 5.1 content my rear speakers get the
same info as my surrounds (left to left and right to right). So they get just
as much information as the surrounds and are just as loud. Of course when it’s
6.1 or 7.1 then it’s separate. I turned everything off but the rear speakers to
see how much content they are actually getting and it’s surprisingly way more
than I thought it would be. If you run
super small speakers the content will probably sound small so it’s up to you on
how much you want from it.

  16. How many band eg is the EmoQ vs Audyssey? You could get a

normal 10band standalone eq and run it in-between your avr and your emo xpa3

(rca from your pre out front left and right to the eq inputs then the outputs

on the eq to the xpa-3). Just have it on bypass when you are watching movies

and on when you’re listing to music. If I

was going to make my set up into a serious 2 channel/ ht that’s what I would do.

Honestly it’s hard for me to go to just basic 2 channel music and not be underwhelmed.

I’m way too spoiled with that multi-channel sound filling the room to a plain

right left stereo. So I have been buying

SACD music and it’s awesome. It the music we love redone in multichannel sound.

  17. The question is... Do you watch 1-6? or 3-6 and then 1-3 ?

I watched them 1-6 but I can see how the other way would be

good. Being that they get better and better sound and audio wise if you go 4-6

then 1-3 it might be a better way. The old movies audio doesn’t hold a candle

to the newer ones. So if you go 1-6 when you get to movie 4 it will be a huge

drop in quality and dare I say be a letdown. So if I did it all over I would

    have started with 4.

  18. Got the cds today and wow the Brothers in Arms SACD sounds just

amazing. They did a great job on the multi-channel mix. I have the cd and it was

already a good sounding cd but wow the cleanness and warmth is scary good. Sadly

the ps3 plays SACD but doesn’t play dvd audio (didn’t know that) so the steely Dan

can only play the Dolby 5.1 track and not the 24 bit one. I plan on getting a separate

player that plays both. Anyone have any recommendations?

  19. We have very similar rooms minus the fire place. I while back

i moved my set up the long way like how you have yours to try it and see how it

sounded compared to the narrow way that I have it. I thought the speakers were way to close to

the Lp and didn’t sound nearly as good. Also having your couch against a wall

makes that even worse. You should try

moving it the narrow way in front of the fire place to try it. I recommend sitting

a min of 10’ away from the 7s.

  20. So I take it the rf7ii's are a very clear sounding speaker. That's the one thing I loved about the Mythos was the clarity. Are the rf7II's considered bright?

    Thanks

YES! They sound so clean and
alive it’s almost like magic lol. [ip]

  21. Those def tec are really nice I demoed

those for almost a good hour and really liked how they sounded. I also love how

they are very sleek and modern looking. Plus the def tec are made to have a

really small footprint and fit into any room. Try and find a place that has both the 7s and

the def tec and demo both if you can. You can probably guess what I like better

but they are both very clean sounding speakers.

When buying b stock always find

out why they are b stock first. If it’s because of color then make sure you can

get the center channel b stock also so they match.
