  1. Before I got the rf-7ii set up I ran the rf-82 system with

the rc-62 and rs-52. So I changed set up like you did. Before I started buying

klipsch I ran speakerlab speakers they are very similar (not now) to the Heritage

Series. In the 70s and early 80s they sold kits some of the models where copy

cats of the Heritage Series khorns and Cornwall speakers. So I was kind of use

to the more refined sound from many years of running labs. When I got into the

reference line I was just looking for something small that filled the room for

ht. and after years of upgrading up to the rf-82 set up i was very happy for

ht. I always knew they didn’t have that smooth clean sound that a really high

end built speaker has but in my apartment it was plenty. When I bought my home

a year ago and was able to really light up the room with sound is when it was

even more apparent that I wasn’t going to be totally happy. I don’t know if by excitement

you mean that sound when the high end kind of cuts at your ears (not in a bad

way) I will admit after getting used to it the rf-82s sounded great loud but

not that clean sound I knew from the labs. When I first heard the rf-7ii the

first thing I felt was that sound when you unplug your ears everything comes

out effortlessly. You never hear the speaker’s sound change when the level gets

really loud. I would recommend turning it up a little more than you normally

would. It’s a different sound than the 82s they would get really loud pretty

fast the sound would be in your face not as laid back and I will use the word

pure and not forced to your ears. I sold my old set up to a friend so I have

heard it (different room of course) and the sound isn’t even close. It’s definitely

a different animal. What did you mean that something was sticking out on the

rc-64ii that you pushed back in?

  2. Thought this would be an intriguing subject line. If you have been following any of my posts -- you will know that I am having trouble finding a pre/pro or AVR. Quick recap -- I went from Pioneer Elite VSX-54 to the UPA7 + first an onkyo 885 (that had an issue and was returned), and now have the UMC-1 (but not completely satisfied). I really think my set up in very close to perfect -- just want a hassle free pro / avr that works as intended.

So...what would you do with $1,500 if you were me?

To complete an Ultra II THX 7.2 set up with the UPA-7 (that runs through a furman)--- what would you pair with it for the price range? Options:

    a. Keep the UMC and get used to the settings, etc and be happy knowing I have a 40% coupon to update later (and only have $700 invested).
    b. Go back to the familiar and get a Pioneer Elite SC-37 and use it to power the surrounds and use the UPA7 to power the fronts (not sure I need the addiitional power).
    c. Same as above but try to the Denon 4311 (recommended at local store).
    d. Get a tried and true Marantz AV7005.
    e. Other

I heard the umc-1 has had many problems. Its bummer they
make such good amps for the money. I guess it will really depend on what you
all want as far as features go. I would think $1500
should get you a great piece of gear. I just don’t have a lot advice on pre
pros though. What part of the umc-1 do you not like?

  3. The KSW-12 I bought last week is blowing fuses and after reading some not so stellar posts about the Synergy subs, ("KSW = Krap Sub Woofer" etc.) I am taking it back to the store I bought it from (YAY me for buying local...the audio store said if I wasn't satisfied I can bring it back for a full refund...no shipping to deal with!)

There is a store here selling Sunfire that is recommending the Sunfire SDS-12 as a replacement for the KSW... Does anyone have any experience with this sub that can offer some feedback? I posted this same message in the Powered Sub forum but didn't get a reply so I'm trying here.

    Thanks

    JD

I would highly recommend going internet direct for a sub you

will get twice the sub dollar for dollar. Svs/epik/ed/hsu all has great subs

for great price and value. Epik has a sub for 499 epik legend it has 2 12s both

powered and I’ve heard it’s an amazing sub for $500. I have the empire (big

brother2x15s) it’s a monster for $800(easily in my system best dollar value

spent next to the emo amp but that’s another tread). It might be out of your

price range. But 1 empire will outperform even the top sunfire. I do like

sunfire but the value new (unless you can get 40-50%off) can’t compete with

internet direct subs. I have a $1200 def tech sub (supercube1 paid way less)

and my epik and svs crush that sub not even close. Only problem however with

those subs are that they are huge (the epik legend is way smaller) they both

way over 120lbs and aren’t going to disappear in your room. So for some people

(not me) they want the sub to tuck away. So in that category the sunfire cubes

and def tec cubes make amazing super small subs. but if you’re like me and you

like the imposing look and sound of monster subs any of the 4 brands I listed

will knock you over. I own two of those brands and even though the svs is

probably my best sub it costs $500 more than the epic.

  4. I have a couple of basic questions.

When running an optical cable from your Bluray player to a reciever are you getting the same signal or is it being down converted? You can only only get Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD through a HDM connection correct? I ask because my older receiver pre new codec plays them back through an Optical cable.

Also I have heard of people saying you can play the new codec through older Preamp/Processors via the 5.1 analog setup or with modifications? Is this correct?

Hdmi is needed for the hd sound formats

  5. Well i will check how the RC 52 will sound with my setup. Because we have both other receivers ( i have the denon 3808 ) it will sound differently.

It’s no contest even when I was running just small wall
mount reference speakers the rc-52 didn’t get it done. It just doesn’t have the
size to give the voice enough to stand out all the time you will still be Turing
the volume up and down on movies with the rc-52. If want something that you can
just watch a movie and know your good on levels during the movie the rc-62 is
your speaker. I only had the rc-52 for a few weeks and took it back.

  6. Are you sure

I am very sure. As Youthman pointed out, there is a local seller with a pair of cherry RS-52's.

About 2.5 years ago, Vanns(and OneCall) was selling the cherry RS-52's and the cherry RSW-10d subwoofer both for $499.00 shipped. I agonized over it for some time until I decided on the RSW-10d. They were slated for the European market and both stores had a bunch to liquidate. They are actually cherry vinyl veneer but very wood-like in appearance.

    Bill

Did they sell more cherry stuff in the uk?
  7. I can see it now... Antique Road Show comes through town

    Surprise

My son in law might want it ? If not i may keep the amp, it said 110 wpc, never know where it could go ?

Lol I wouldn’t count on it those rack set ups were huge in the 80s that’s when they really started lying about stat ratings to sell gear. My guess 60 watts if that
  8. I think it’s a combination of things half those people probably have never even heard klipsch and are just going by what they read on forums. Not too many stores have higher end stuff. About the best speaker you might find would be the rf-82. A few stores have some stuff but most people audition lowers level klipsch. The fatiguing part I don’t know how anyone could say that from just an audition maybe they are just guessing they would be. Anything loud can become fatiguing for anyone no matter what kind of speaker brand it is. They just announced another new line of even lower level speakers so I’m guessing that rep will grow even more. I know klipsch makes money on these lower level speakers and it might be a good value I don’t know. But as they say you’re only as good as your weakest link

  9. Willand. I am probably over analyzing this decision ( Internet shopping will lead to that). I'll probably go with the nr707 for $400 and then I'll look at those amps you suggested. I was gonna pair it with an emotiva xpa-5. What do you think of that amp?

Love mine sounds great! Wait for their sales though can probably save a few hundred when they go on sale with free shipping I bet they will have a sale on the 4th of July

  12. Hi Folks,

I picked up an RC-62 II center at a close out sale for a local AV retailer that went under (good-bye, Ultimate Electronics / AudioKing - I will miss you).

I have a previous set of RS-10 surrounds, elevated on the back wall of a small room (maybe 18' W x 10' D). The center is probably too big for this room, but can you really have too much speaker? Smile

Anyway, I am considering adding Klipsch bookshelves for the R/L front (Yamaha RX-V667 AVR), but I am really stuck on which model (i.e., RB-41/51/61 II). They will sit on the shelf above the panel, on risers to tip downward towards the listening position, on either side of the center.

I can't find any meaningful reviews on these models on the Internet (excluding a small number of user comments on Amazon). Even the AVS forum is pretty quiet on these speakers (unless my Google skills need work). To be frank, that is making me a little nervous. Also, with the fall of Ultimate Electronics and the shift in product lines at BB/Magnolia, there isn't really anywhere I can go to audition these.

I guess I am looking for two things: 1. testimonials or a review that comments on SQ and 2. an opinion on the one model over the other. In addition to the minor spec differences, it looks like the 61 adds bi-amp and moves the passive port from the rear to the front of the speaker (which may really matter, since these will be a few inches from the back wall).

Thanks, in advance, to anyone that can offer an opinion.

Grats on a great center use to have one and loved it (rc-62) I would go as big as you can (price vs space) nothing other than maybe the rf-7ii in the reference line would be too big for that center.
  13. I caution just buying the cheapest unit. Video transfer would be one thing to look at if you plan on running your video outs to the onkyo and then to the TV. You want to make sure you’re getting the full color transfer possible. I know on mine the video transfer is better on mine than on the lowers models. I know denon is the same way not sure about onkyo. Most stuff doesn’t have 2 hdmi out puts so from say a ps3 if you want to use the hd formats for sound you have to run the hdmi to the avr first then from the avr to the tv. So you can lose picture quality if you use a lower level avr. Now you could run optical from the ps3 to the avr and the hdmi to the TV but then you can’t use the new hd sound formats
  14. I wanna thank all you Jedi audiophile masters for the invaluable insiders information on this
topic of bigger speakers VS external amp. Seem like the verdict is out and I'm gonna have to
save up to get bigger size woofers like the famously towers rf-62 or rf-82 instead of buying
the XPA-3. But I wonder if just relying on my receiver alone will provide enough juice to power
these woofers when using it in a 5.1 movie setting.

Thanks to all you great people on this forum!

Yes you will have plenty power in a 5.1 set up but I would caution 7.1 most avrs that are rated around 100 or more a channel only will run in the 40-50watt range with 5 channels. If you add 2 more speakers they will drop way down and give you no head room. What I mean is if you’re watching a movie and it’s at a good level and running about 75% of your power you have more power when the movies demands more volume. If you add 2 channels then the same level will take 90- 95% of your power so when the movie gets louder your avr will clip and that’s when you can damage your speakers. That’s probably the best part of having a separate amp is the head room. Not only does it sound better but it’s always driving clean power. Head room is so important with movies because it’s always up and down on how loud it is. But good choice on getting speakers first you won’t be disappointed.
  15. The guy from klipsch had said they made a few but that was it. I did a goggle image and only one pic (the same one that was posted that bill said he saw) looks nice though I wonder why they didn’t make more of them
  16. "Might have been in early development that we considered the wood surrounds. Seems every one wanted black.

We may be working on more real wood products in the future...."

  17. He lists them as cherry but RS don’t come in cherry only black

On the contrare my friend...willliand has been looking for a pair of Cherry RS-52's for quite some time now. Bill told me Klipsch made them for the UK market. That's why we don't see them in the US. This is the first pair that I have seen come up in cherry.

Are you sure I thought those pics going around was a model that klipsch was messing with but never moved forward with? I have seen the pics of them in cherry though. Like they have pics of the new rf-7ii with the old cone drivers and some with the old feet.
  18. This guy has had his RS-52's on CL for awhile now and has not sold them. They are Cherry finish for $400. I think $400 is a fair price for them and $500 for the RS-62's.

He lists them as cherry but RS don’t come in cherry only black
  19. Not familar with the THX. I have tried lots of speakers in the reference line- RC 64- Rf 83s- all of the Ref top of the line bookshelfs for sides and rears. Attempted to mix the k horns with some reference stuff for superior 2 ch and HT. Could not get it to work. Horn mismatch. I have gone to modded heritage K horns- fronts- lascala center= Modded belles for side surrounds- industrial lascallas for rears- The lascallas will be moded in a similar manner as the others. This setup with 2" horms on the K horns moves a large volume of air/sound and really fills the room. I have heard many high line HT setups and this one tops most if not all of them. I honestly think tweaked Heritage is as good as you can get for HT or 2 CH. I think outboard power amps are also important. I strongly vote for the heritage however not having heard the other choice- good luck

IMHO K horns with 2" trachorns- ALK universal crossovers- Large JBL drivers- will out perform any reference speaker for HT or 2 ch applications- of course that is just my opinion. There is a radical difference from stock configuration in sound.

I bet that sounds amazing very nice set up. I hope someday to get a nice set of khorns for a 2 channel set up. Probably would have to be my next house though I would need more room
