  1. This is a very interesting philosophical question. But beware. Do you remember the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde? Perhaps the element added to the sound recording by the unintended random vibrations of the stylus during the recording process may only be recovered by the unintended random vibrations of the stylus during playback, and lost in a clean, touch-less method. "it was that unknown impurity which lent efficacy to the draught"
  2. well--that is why I asked. I really do take your opinions seriously, since I am new to this, and I want to keep my hearing as good as possible. I will think about what options I have, for sure. PS You know what really bugs me? The second thing* my wife said when I got these speakers was "you are going to go deaf!" I hate it when she is right. (*the first thing she said was "they stink") Thanks for the input, I really appreciate having some informed perspective on this.
  3. thanks for the replies guys. gotta make do with what I got. And in terms of the efficiency--I got the HK430 volume knob at about 9'oclock and that is a good volume for most of the day. Hardly loud at all. But the bass can be felt much better than with the KG2's. when I am thinking, I scoot the chair all the way back to the far way (about 8 feet) and can get the soundstage. I end up thinking quite a bit. will try a different layout when I get a new couch today. cheers
  4. could you type a bit louder? I can't hear you... but seriously, though I have never been accused of being too smart, this is not meant to be a permanent solution. I do have a mint set of KG2's (which are very sweet, I agree). They will end up in the office at some point. The Chorus should migrate to the living room. But for those who may have followed the saga of my $100 Chori's, they were a bit rough when I picked them up, and the wife will not yet let them into the more civilized parts of the house. Plus, I need to get rid of the SF2's that are on the home theater set up. Since I will not be ablte to get around to refinishing the cabinets for a few weeks, and since there is no way I can resist playing them... but I am being careful about the loudness, for sure. by the way, the Chorus, with the contour on, sound extremely good even at low volumes and at crazy angles.
  5. So, in an earlier post there was a long discussion about Cornwalls being too close http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/p/78857/782692.aspx#782692 I have a similar issue (hesitate to call it a problem). I listen to music at my desk, about 9 hours a day, and I really don't have much of a choice in terms of moving things around. So I am using the new Chorus II's with an HK 430. I have played with the angle on the speakers, from parallel with the back wall, all the way to 90 degrees. Frankly, I am not much of an audiophile, it all sounds differently good. It is loud and fun. In terms of "soundstage" etc., if I sit about 6' from the desk, it sometimes sounds better, of course. The only thing that I would want to address is the bass. Perhaps because it is so close to my head, and with new titanium tweets and sonicaps, the highs seem overly bright. If I use the "contour" on the HK, the bass comes in much stronger, and balances out. Interestingly, contour does not seem to increase the highs as much as it does the bass. Besides getting a new office, I wonder if anyone has any suggestions for this computer speaker set up? By the way, I am running a musicstreamer II DAC (which sounds pretty good), and listening to a mix of Spotify premium (up to 320kbps on some songs) and CD's. Lots of Jazz, some classical and rock. The picture is what feels best to me, but kind of looks weird... Thanks!
  6. You know, sometimes we feel bad about getting a steal form someone, but this guy deserved it. I asked on the phone if there was anything wrong and he totally lied about the condition, made me drive all the way out there etc. If he had been honest I still would have done it, but that's just not the right way to behave. He probably thought the damage was to the cabinet, when it was merely to the base. For all I know he thinks I am the one who got the short end of the stick. As you said, he could have sold the parts for a few hundred bucks easily. Glad I could rescue the pair... now they are in good hands and away from his nasty dog.
  7. Hard to believe it has been just one week--here we are, and the Chorus's are nice and clean (no smell), new Crites titanium tweeters and Sonicaps are in, and the wife is happy (although she can't understand why I spent more on tweeters and caps than on the speakers themselves...) thanks for the input, advice, stories, and overall support.
  8. I was just looking to upgrade the tweeter domes on the cheap -not to get crazy. more than anything I was curious as to whether the switch was possible, assuming that the phenolic dome on the KG2 was better than the poly on the Chorus II thanks
  9. Seriously--tight budget here, so I am wondering if this is just stupid but I have a set of KG2's that right now are in my daughter's room (she's 5) and I have read these have Phenolic tweeters, which seem to be as good or better than titanium while Chorus II has poly. They are both 1" sooo....what if I switch them?? Mainly listen to the Chorus II now that I got them (for $100, see my other post for the details, if interested). Bring on the verbal abuse, please. (I know the "right" answer is to cough up the $50 and get titanium. Just thinking out of the box here)
  10. Thanks-- that sounds like kind of a no-brainer. I will probably just mount on the board maybe upgrade the diaphragms later on too...
  11. So I am seriously thinking of updating the capacitors in my new Chorus II's with sonicaps. They are 1993 model. I have some experience with soldering, etc. Sounds pretty stratightforward. So my 3 questions: i. should I just replace with the same values, or do people (like Crites, and all the experts) suggest any further modifications. Found the schematic in an earlier post ii. Is there benefit in running the caps on wires rather than having them mounted on the pc board (some pictures of rebuilt/custom crossovers seem to do this) I imagine this may help cooling? iii. Upgrade the rest of the wiring? is this more psychological, or might it help? http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/storage/6/641041/Klipsch_Chorus2_network.jpg Thanks! Lou
  12. I have been putting them to the test--Miles and Mahler to test out the horns, some John Dowland to see how they sound with delicate nuanced music. So far this is unbelievable. I had never heard anything better than KG2 before. I repaired the tear on the radiator yesterday. So today I am going to push the bass with some electronic stuff. Deadmou5 has some seriously deep grooves. And yes, I will play it loud... Thanks for all the advice--you all are an excellent group of people. PS Bruce: thanks for the suggestion on the repair--and no, I don't think I am selling them : )
  13. Hey all--thanks so much for all the responses. It was nuts. So the story actually began on the 4th of July when I picked up a mint set of KG2's locally. Before that I had a set of Synergy SF-2 that I had bought years ago. Nothing to get excited about. But after the KG's, which I paired with a HK430, I was hooked, and started checking craigslist compulsively looking for a bigger/better set. So yesterday I hit the jackpot and see this listing for a hundred bucks, but it had been up for hours. Called the guy, and he obviously has been flooded with calls. Tells me that there are already 4 people coming over first thing in the morning Saturday. I tell him I'll be there in 45 minutes. First, I run through the house scrounging for cash, rummage through the wife's purse, yell at her "I gotta go see a man about a mule" (I guess I thought humor was the way to go), and hit the road. At this point, all I got is the address, and that it is in Goldsboro NC (no idea where the heck that is). As I am driving I punch the address into my dinky phone (which is not one of the fancy iphones, but has a 2 inch screen), so now I have directions. Then, there is the issue that I know nothing about Chorus's. Mind you, I have only been into this for a month. So, I start researching on the Chorus II by reading old posts here. Everything I read is telling me that this deal sounds too good to be true, but I just keep driving. I calle the guy when I am about half an hour away, and he tells me that somone from Richmond, VA is also racing down at that moment to get them... *now if this is one you guys here I apologize* But long story short, I got there, held my nose (literally) stuffed them in the back seat of my car (barely fit, otherwise there would have been a Chorus II strapped to my roof). And got the heck out. Quick chat with the Mrs. Luckyly my battery was running out on the phone, which gave me time for her to cool off by the time I got home. Now I have to figure out the smell, but it is only along the bottom of one, about a quarter inch where they got soaked (probably sat on carpet). Seemed still wet. I think the enzyme stuff is a great idea. At worst I was thinking about replacing the bottom wood on that one. It seems the "base" is not the same piece of wood as the rest of the cabinet. Maybe getting some nice real oak and making a new base? clearly that would not be original, but since I just want to listent to them, it would not matter. The only other problem is a small tear on the back of the passive radiator. I figured it could be taken out and maybe glue in a piece of paper on the back? I have not yet searched for fixes on this. Anyway, again, thanks for the many emails. good to hear I am not crazy. Cheers, Lou PS-- 4 screws and the bottom platform came off. out it goes to the shed. no more smell. the bottom is about 4" tall frame of MDF , I definitely will rebuild using solid oak rest of the cabine pretty solid and stink-free!!!
  14. OK-- they work. here is a pic. these things are pretty huge--I had KG2's before, and was not expecting them to be this big and heavy. pretty cool so far
  15. dude, like I am saying---this could still turn out quite badly for me here! This is hardly a celebration--more like "what did I do" moment. at this point I don't even know if the things work...
