  1. I will be upgrading the tweeter and crossover with Bob Crites equipment. It really helped the Chorus. But I didn't do the mids. As I recall, Mr. Crites didn't think that was as important. I am curious, what's your opinion? And if I remember correctly, to get titanium mids you have to order them from Klipsch. Is that right? And are they as easy as putting in the tweeters? I am technologically challenged.

BTW, in the past year, I have had Chorus, RF-83's, KLF-30's, Snell C/V's, and Acoustic Zen Adagios in and out of my basement. I don't know if it is my ears or my particular listening area, but the Fortes work in a way that none of the above did. Over the past three days I have spent all my extra time switching out the 83's the Adagios and the Fortes. I kept telling my wife that it doesn't make sense that I prefer the Fortes, but I do. Go figure, heh?

  2. For what it is worth, the tubes will almost certainly be connected to the Chorus. And that's going to be upstairs so small wattage is no problems. I am selling some Onkyo gear that I recently purchased to partially fund my tube project. Thanks for the help.

  3. That could be room modes at work. Are you using an SPL meter to measure this, or is it ear only. If the sub were outside or in an anichoic chamber, this would probably not happen.

Try moving the sub around, and in particular out from the wall a bit further. It also sounds like your cornwalls and your sub might be overlapping a bit too much. That can result in boominess or cancellation of frequencies. If you turn the sub gain down to correct this overlap, then you are also turning down the frequencies which do not. You will be missing a lot of LFE. The quick fix is to turn the dial on the sub to a lower crossover frequency, then adjust the gain again.

    Pretty good info... thanks

I am a rookie at this compared to many others here. Lately I have been learning about room modes, and highly recommend it to anybody serious about getting it right in thier sound system. In short, you should work out the room before running Audyssey or whatever calibration you choose. To do that, you need an RTA which measures down to 1/10th octave, and take lots of measurements all over the room. Most of your adjustments will be moving speakers and seating positions at first. When that is done, you move on to room treatments to correct further. The last step, if needed, is Audyssey or YPAO, or whatever.

That sounds really great! Where's the "For Dummies" version? :)

  4. I am excited to hear the reviews.  I am planning to add a pair of subs to my two channel.  I have begun saving my pennies, reading various reviews, and looking for a good fit.   I had an SW-310 and it just didn't impress and I sold it.  Yesterday, I noticed on my local CL a REL Strata iii for sale for $450.00.  I called the guy and threw out $300, and he said " ok.".   It is in perfect shape.  I bought it simply to see how a different sub would sound in my system.  Wow!

Anyway... I hooked it up last night and after about two hours of tweaking it was AMAZING.  It confirmed for me that I will be using subs in my two channel.  So I am really interested to her how a pair of SW-115's perform in two channel.  And they will have to outpace REL.

  5. In my experience, I like how it sounds for music. I listen to mostly hip hop/EDM tho, so it might not be much of a help to some of you.

Yea, I am afraid if I hopped it would be bad for the hip. And I believe an EDM is what I had for my 50th birthday. :)

  6. The sub did not come in yesterday. I am getting impatient!

That's a bummer, and on a Friday no less. Can't wait to hear your review. I am looking for a sub (or pair) and the SW-310 didn't cut it. I will be curious to hear how it does musically. BTW, are you getting one or two?

  7. I have an opportunity to pick up a pair of these. I will be using one or both exclusively for two channel. Anyone familiar with them? How are they with music? And what is a good price? Can't find very much info online. Thanks, Chip.

  8. That's the one upside re shipping. I found I one on the local CL, which is what is making me think about it now. The guy is asking $450.

A fellow forum member suggested a Decware SE84C. How do they compare?

Remember that I am technology challenged and definitely want to stay under $700. (And the loser to $500 I can stay the happier I will be.)

  9. I would like to give tubes a shot. I have two limitations. One, I am technologically challenged. Two, I have bought a good bit of gear recently and can't afford much.

What do you guys think of the Yaqin MC 10L?

What other integrated tube amp would you suggest in the $500-700 range? I have reasonably good ss (Cambridge 840w & 840e). Would I notice a significant difference with tubes? Or... should I wait a few months till I can spen a bit more? Thank, Chip.

  10. Thanks,

It seemed to me that the right toe in was more important for the 83's than the Chorus. Also, I had to pull the 83's almost 3' from the back wall to prevent boominess. And I have bass traps. The 1' mark gives me a good starting point. I haven't had a speaker with that big passive woofer in the back. And the Forte's are rated at 32Hz where the Chorus are 45Hz. This will be fun :)

  11. Howdy, I mentioned in a previous post that I am picking up a pair of Fortes this week. Any hints on placement? It took a lot of messing around to get the RF-83's (which I am now getting rid of) and Chorus to sound good. I can easily keep them 3'-4' from the outside walls and if necessary 2'-2.5' from the back wall. I know I will have to toy with them, but any initial guidance will be appreciated. Chip

  12. Hey, there's a guy who wants t trade me a pair of these for something I m selling. I have been looking for a musical sub. At these any good? How would one of them work in a two channel setup? What are they worth, because I would be selling the second one? Thanks.

  13. It will be a couple weeks before I can get to it, but I won't be doing the midranges for a while after that. I have a pair of Chorus with the BEC tweeters and crossovers. I want to do the exact same mods on the Forte and do a side-by-side comparison with all the same gear. It is something I have wanted to do for a long time.

  14. This Monday I will be receiving an Onkyo M-504 and P-304. On Wednesday, I am driving to Indiana to pick up a pair of Fortes.

There is something about knowing that I will use my iPad to control a Mac mini-that's plugged into a dac-that will be fed to the Onkyos-to play sweet music by the Fortes-that has me juiced. Something old and something new!

Anyway, in a week or so I will be ordering BEC tweeters and crossovers. Here's my question: should I upgrade the midrange? How many of you have done that and how much difference did it make? Also, are the midranges more difficult to do than the tweeters? I hate to admit this
(for fear of sounding like a girly man), but if I have to solder it is above my technical pay grade. And is there a difference between the midrange you order from Klipsch over the one that is offered from Crites?

As always, I really appreciate the advice.

    Thanks,

    Chip
