  1. Tommy, when you mention 515s,have you heard the 3154 which is supposed to be a more extended sounding driver than 515?It's supposed to have freq responce 30-2000Hz... The guy who has offered me some 816 has several basses for these. He has 1 515LF 1 LFE 2 E's and 2 3154... Which would you recomend? Regards, Rune
  2. Thanks! I will try it and let my hearing decide if I like it or not.I'll get back with a report! Regards, Rune
  3. Is the upper frequency limit of the Khorn basshorn 400Hz? When I made the type A x-over I let out the inductors in the bass.I listened to them for each change, and without the mids/highs.And when one of the horn played without the inductor and one with, the one without played much higher in freqs than 400hz...I did for sure here freqs up in the 1k+++ area.. The reason I ask is that I came across a Altec 511b(500 hz x-over) with 802-8D driver and the original x-over here in Norway. It's very rare seen over here!.I have read so much about this that I just have to jump on it and try what the fuzz is all about..I will run it on top of the bass cabinet of the Khorn.... What do ya think? Regards, Rune
  4. Trader, You say your AlK's sound better than your Type A.Can you say something about the sound, and why you prefer the ALKs? BTW,do you know the name and numbers of the drivers in your Khorns? Regards, Rune
  5. Some of you may have seen me talking about my "new" x-over in mine Khorns.I just have to start a new topic to let you all know. The change in sound isn't the least subtle. It sounds almost like a complete different speaker. I have all the time from when I bought these new in year 2000,felt they had a nasty tendency of screaming to me in mids/highs(The bass has been a joy all the time)And I have tried every forums I could think of to get help with this problem. The most people said that the Khorn is so revealing that the problem lies somewhere else in my set-up.I also have a small room 20m2 so I sit about 3m(9 feet) from the speakers, and that's offcourse not so pleasent with most horns. I changed a lot of hi-fi components, and all the time I felt the problem was in the speaker, but nobody seemed to agree.I had by the time an all Audio Note set-up,and everyone that have heard AN know they don't scream. Luckily I got an Audio Note speaker and so I stopped listening to my Khorns. Because I had read that PWK prefered the 1.order crossover(Type A,In mine there was the AK-3),I thought I might give it a try.I made up my mind to use Audio Note caps(I'm no dealer in case you start to become suspicious ),because their products give me so much harmonic rich sound from every instrument and voice. So now the AN caps are in my Khorns.I have no inductor in the bass, and offcourse the fuses are bypassed. !!PS!Just remember that if you do these changes you might blow drivers, especially the tweet, and you are totally on your own replacing them!!!!The warranty has left the building! Now I've had the caps in there playing for something like 15 hours, and the sound is amazing! They are so harmonic rich sounding that I only have heard sweater violin sound one place, and that was in a small concert in Praha in 1996. My feeling was until now that the reason Khorn had become so famous was all alone their bassperformance. But now they have maybe the best mids/highs I have ever heard(and I have heard some good speakers). And they also sound very coherent,ballsy,rythmic.......I could go on and on!. I know a lot of people would not like the sound of the Type A, beacause it sounds more full, and then people think they hear less details.Excuse me for saying this, but BULLSHIT!.There are much more details now,but I don't bother listen for it because I'm busy listen to music!!! So hear me dedicated music lover:The Khorn is the work of a genius, but you haven't heard it until you try PWK's favorite x-over......... I have to go.I hear Jimi Hendrix has arrived in my living room!!! Regards, Rune
  6. And why Audio Note? Well,Audio Note products is the most natural sounding I have heard.I have an all Audio Note set-up,so neadless to say they go well with the rest of my set-up. I don't know if you've heard any Audio Note products, but if you have and liked it,I can assure you that you will like these caps... Regards, Rune
  7. Tubelion, I used Audio Note copper foil paper in oil caps, and the autoformer that is in the AK-3 x-over.I think it's called T4A. Regards, Rune
  8. Tubelion, The x-over i built is a 1.order and it's the one that used to be in earlier Khorns. That one is called the Type A,and it's very simple. I don't know the x-overs in Belles, but aren't they using the same drivers and horns as the Khorn?X-over frequencies at 400 and 6000? I didn't use an inductor on the woofer. So my x-over consist of:13uF cap on the mids(With me paralell 10+3.3uF) and the autoformer, and 2uf cap on the tweeter(I use 2.2uF). I only have shematics for the Type A used in Khorns, and I can e-mail you that one if you want. I guess Al knows a lot more about this than I. Good luck! Regards, Rune
  9. Al, I don't have any instruments to measure the caps, but actually it now seems like I have to turn the volume knob further to get the same level as before. So your probably right that there are a loss that you can measure.I don't even know how a cap work. But,IMO we would have perfect speakers, amps and so on,if measurements were everything. My ears are my instruments, and they tell me that now I can hear more of the colours of lets say a violin. And female vocals don't sound like a horror movie anymore. That could partly be because of the elliptical filter is out of the way(As djk has pointed out. Thanks!)And when I now listen to good recordings of saxophones and trumpets.Oh my o my! what a body, fullness and colours. Tubelion, Nobody else can tell you what's the best for you. That you have to find out yourself. I was about to sell my Khorn, because they sounded so much worse than my Audio Note E speaker in the mids/highs.Now they are so much calmer. And more important, more natural.I can get deeply touched by a string quartet playing soft, and on the other end AC/DC kicks my *** like no else speaker can. My advice is try it! I can for sure tell you I will never go back! Regards, Rune
  10. My opinion on the paper in oil caps(I have only heard the Audio Notes and the Jensens)is that they are calmer yes,but not because of loss.To me other caps screams in the upper mids/low treble(among other places),and this can be confused with more energy in that area or more details. But when details pop out at you my opinion is that somethings wrong. Why is it that I have more transparency and "look into" feeling of the sound if they represent a loosing factor?.I can hear more details now if I want to listen to that, but I prefer listen to instruments and voices. Regards, Rune
  11. Tubelion, I have recently made the A crossovers for my Khorn, using Audio Note copper foil paper in oil caps.My Khorn is a year 2000 model,so the original x-over is called AK-3.I understand that Klipsch has to secure the drivers from people who want to use 1000w SS amps on them, but to still use the slogan "if you don't like what's coming out ,you won't like whats going in" is in my opinion a little untrue. My Khorn are now a lot less harsh, more organic sounding, more transparent and it seem to work more like one unit than three.(PWK prefered this x-over,and now I clearly understand why!). Because I didn't get the inductor for the bass I intended to try, I just left it out.I like it.But I might have some phase problems because the bass is now playing much higher in frequency(overlapping the mid) than when an inductor is in place. But what the heck!It sounds good! I do highly recomend the 1.order x-over,just remember that you then can blow the tweeter. But I don't think it should be a problem with good tube amps. And as far as paper in oil caps are concerned,if you listen to sounds, bass, mids, highs and so on,don't bother. But if you want lack of harshness,life,fullness... paper in oil has it.The Audio Notes are very expencive so you could might try with cheaper ones just to try if you like it.I don't know if they make Jensens any more, but that would probably be a good choice. Good luck! Regards, Rune
  12. I finally took the time to finish the Type A crossover for mine Khorns, and I can never go back to the AK-3.This sounds much more natural. I used Audio Note copper in oil caps.Expensive, but I'm sure they play a big part of the natural sound I get. I used 2.2mF on the tweeter and 10+3.3 in the mids, and I used the autoformer from the AK-3 x-over.The plan was to use Goertz inductors in the bass, but I didn't get them.So I just run them without, and I like the result. The bass gets faster, fuller and more playful. I probably have a lot of overlaps in the x-over frequencies, especially bass to mids, but I must say I couldn't care less!!The speakers sound much more coherent...more like one unit. I can see why PWK liked this x-over. Rune
  13. Guy, I just read some old discussions, and I saw you were buying some Altec mid horn and driver.Do you still use them?Which sounds more natural? Rune
  14. Hi Guy! Have you tried without the inductor in the bass? I have ordered some Audio Note c/o caps for the tweet and mid,and a Alphacore inductor for the bass.I'm looking forward to hearing it! Thanks, Rune
