  1. That's a great article Marion and I wonder if your Dad had any idea that what he started you would then take to the levels you have...Big Smile

    miketn

He tells my all the time he would love to hear my current system. He lives about 7 hrs. away & is not able to make the trip. Last time he was here I just had the Khorns so he never has heard the Jubilee's

  2. I think I got this affliction naturally. My wife, Beck, was digging through old stuff today and found this.

This is an article posted about my dad in the local newspaper in
Aug., 1972. My dad built the first speaker, based on Klipsch plans,
somewhere around 1962 when I was about 10 yrs. old. I remember so well him building the speakers and several Heathkit and Fisher tube amp kits.

I grew up listening to them and was doomed to never being
satisfied with less. He is now 86 and still has both speakers plus all
    his LPs.

My dad was a chemical engineer, inventor, photographer and music nut!...
sorta like me LOL, except I went the mechanical vs. chemical route. We still talk about Klipsch, tube amps and Jazz regularly.

  3. hey all

it seems most things I read people have their sub level down (in db terms) compared to the fronts.

I let my Denon set up the speaker levels and I noticed it had my fronts and center at +7 and the sub at -5. I presume I am more of a bass head than most maybe but the only way I have been able to make it sound good to me is +2 for the fronts and +6 for the sub...

I used my RS SPL meter and basically set the fronts to 87 DB and the sub to 92 DB with the manual test tone on my receiver.

by no means does it sound "bass heavy" to me at these settings so I just cant imagine why the "normal" setting would be so much different? What does everyone else set their sub at compared to the other speakers?

sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forum - move if needed

The Radio Shack meter needs to have the below correction added to there readings.

    Hz Correction

    10 20.5
    12.5 16.5
    16 11.5
    20 7.5
    25 5
    31.5 3
    40 2.5
    50 1.5
    63 1.5
    80 1.5

  4. Sorry, I don't remember what the exact output impedance is but a quick calculation shows 1.58 ohm with the 4 ohm tap.

This is the issue...even on the "4 Ohm" tap, SETs, with typically low forward loop gain that precludes use of negative feedback to lower its output impedance, have too high output impedance in order to not affect speaker FR.

Even the F3 affects Khorn output at 1 Ohm output impedance, if we are to take fender bender at his word (...which I do...). The input impedance complex plane plots correspond one-to-one with his symptomatic complaints about the F3 paired to Khorns. One easy fix is to simply EQ these two regions down, but that doesn't completely erase the issues of low input impedance speakers being driven by high output impedance amplifiers.

In rigma's case, the TADs that he uses are essentially a minimum of 11 Ohms, rising to ~27 Ohms maximum in the operating band. I do not know the combined input impedance characteristics of his passive networks + the Jubs, however: my guess is that the combined curve is probably more than 8 Ohms minimum up and down the audible frequency band (nominally 20 Hz-17KHz for us more mature folks).

    Chris

My passives also have LF & HF Zobels.

  5. By the way I have had zero maintenance problems in 5 years, not even a tube.

One of my 300B tubes died one month after I installed these monoblocks. May be the issue is the designer/manufacturer. This is hard to believe, however, that they were that bad. Another issue: the amps had about 2.5 dB gain differential right out of the box. I find that hard to believe, too. This is crazy.

By the way Marion, what is the output impedance of your 300B monoblocks? I assume that you're using them with your now-famous Jub passive crossovers to drive your fronts.

    Chris

Yes, I use them to drive the front Jubilees through the custom passives. Sorry, I don't remember what the exact output impedance is but a quick calculation shows 1.58 ohm with the 4 ohm tap. They have Magnaquest FS-030 output trannies.

  6. All I can say is that I have been listening to Khorns since 1965 and now Jubilees and have been through many tube and SS amps. For the past 5 years I have been using 300B SET that I built using premium components and it is by far the best I have heard, even at loud levels.

Cask the draw backs you describe are not happening with my system. I don't have an explanation as to why your experience was so different than mine. By the way I have had zero maintenance problems in 5 years, not even a tube.

  7. Actually, scratch that question/issue altogether. Scored a pair of Dx38s cheap (relatively) so looks like I'll be sticking to that route. Been a good day! Thank you all for the input though. Also have bass-bin and surround/rear amp issue solved, so all that really remains (the final piece!) is what amp to pair with the 402s? Will have TAD drivers someday (if they ever arrive) but K69s for the next couple of months. I'm sure there have been several combinations tried. Any recommendations here? Music above all, but occasional HT use as well. Don't want to break the bank, but also want to get it right. I'm guessing that would put max budget at +/- 2k...flexible limit. Used almost a certainty. A'gon is flooded w/ amps right now it's a buyer's market. It's all coming together Smile this has been a FUN journey thus far.

You should consider a 300B or 2A3 SET amp for the 402. I use the 300B and Mike Beasley uses the 2A3, we both have the TADs, and they both sound wonderful.

  8. I bought (3) of the "new design" Jubilee bass bins and the buid quality was very good, no issues at all.

Also the (2) 402 horns I bought several years ago were very good, no flaws I can see, finish or otherwise.

I also think the 402 sitting on the Jubilee bass bin looks just right, even the wife thinks so! Just plug the screw holes around the perimerter with black scwews or plugs.

I still say the 402 is the best HF horn I have ever heard.

  9. i know it would be smart to just let this die........but greg did not promote these. a guy that bought them did. and for what it is worth i am not sure when or where he insulted anyone or acted like the moderator.

    just saying

In all due respect Josh, his post on page 1 including a link to his
website is promoting anyway you look at it. Klipsch has worked for 60
years and built a faithful following.

To come hear and try to take
advantage of their work for personal gain is stealing imo, and no different than any other common thief.

  10. Does anyone else not think it is so wrong for someone to copy a companies product then try to sell it on that companies forum?

It is a shame the world has come to the point that some people will do anything for a buck no matter how unethical.
