He had, until he sold the Ghorns. Yes, Luke's horns are monsters compared to the THT. That being said, he is 100% impressed by the THT and what it accomplishes with only 300 watts.
yes the first video. rowan has been to the house. its luke's place in minnesota. i have a hard time believing that the video of the tht is even close to the same as the top video. if you are talking a 15" driver taking 300 watts vs 2 18" LMS ultras getting 6000 watts each and 2 B&C I-PAL drivers getting 5000 each is the same thing your wrong. luke probably has one of the best most capable bass setups of anyone in the united states. top notch. but his setup is WAAAAY different than the tht being discussed.
This:Scrappy has a video of two G-horns making a dining room table in the other room dance around probably about 3-4" off the floor if I remember right,
Here's Tuba HT's accomplishing the same thing:
I've pushed my subs hard. And they never distort or make any strange sounds. Think about how many sealed subs I'd need in my basement to accomplish what 1 THT did for 2 years and what 2 are doing now.

It doesn't work because I deleted it and my post. I'm not going to piss into a 40 knot headwind with you.
Sorry, but he does. In multiple threads. Ones which include personal attacks that annoy me. Been told I sound stupid for pointing out something he admitted to in another thread. Been told I was deaf and dumb because I said I couldn't hear a 1.5% difference in subwoofer distortion at 20 hz at reference level while material was playing, which is silliness. Been called out for not hearing a horn yet he admitted to never hearing any of the systems he puts down on a seemingly daily basis, which is the pot calling the kettle black, instead basing his experience on dance club systems and car audio. I question the sanity of ignoring infrasonic material on modern home theaters and suddenly I'm a horn hater that Paul Klipsch would disapprove of. It's getting pretty old. This really annoys me.
...sarcastic comments aren't needed.
I'd be VERY happy with only discussing science and experiences. You're right, this stuff is not needed.
So if you've been in that area have you been to Doug's house? Scrappy has a video of two G-horns making a dining room table in the other room dance around probably about 3-4" off the floor if I remember right, coupled with a measured response of over 140 db, and they were crossed over BELOW 25 hz. I have zero doubt those things are no joke and are in fact on my wish list. 13 sheets of baltic birch when I am hurting for workshop space is a hard pill to swallow though.Coming from someone who's never even listened to a horn sub. Tubas are amazing. And I'd happily put my tubas against your sealed and see how they perform against one another. The only place your sealed setup would beat the THTs is under 15hz, which mine do in my 4500cuft basement. I've attached a sweep of my room: Blue is the front THT, Red is the rear THT, and Green is both. Not bad for two THTs in a 4500cuft basement with only 300 watts each. This sweep was done at -20 on the MV with the subs at -2 through the receiver. I'm more than happy to do the same sweep at reference.
I've been in some great rooms, Scrappy old HT before he re did his basement with 4 sealed 18s, Carps room with 8 sealed 18s, MaxMercys room with 8 sealed 15s and Lukeamdmans HT with 2 Ghorns and 2 Othorns. In my honest opinion, nothing beats horns for actually feeling bass waves. In Lukes room on the Pulse server scene you can actually feel the waves of bass rippling through you. We did the same scene with his 4 ported mains, and while it was impressive, it wasn't the same. Now, he will be getting 8 21" next week, and I am planning to go help him stack his 4 DO sealed boxes and his Othorns. Probably help him get the subs to play well together. So, I can't wait to see what that sounds like. However, Even with all that displacement, I still think the Ghorn + Othorn combo will beat it in the spl department. The new system will go lower, but the 4 horns will be louder. In a basement, I'll take spl over lower.
edit: your attachment didn't work.

For cost vs performance it is hard to beat the combination of pro 15" in a sealed enclosure. Throw 500 watts of Class D at it and it works for me when I want really low bass. I probably cross lower than most and use it sparingly and never let it start booming. I like clean sharp low bass. I put my sub speaker in a bigger box than most would consider, almost 6 cubic ft. but I do not have to worry about the WAF. I spent maybe $600 diy and one like it would cost retail much more and it is really not that hard for most to build. Most home wood outlets will even cut the wood to your spec's and all you have to do is glue and screw it together with some good braces inside. Plenty of how to on the web. Seal the joints with silicone rubber in the inside for a tight seal. Countersink the screws, fill with wood putty and apply a finish.
Completely disagree. How low are you getting with a single 15 in a sealed design with 500 watts? Honestly, I'm curious.

Watched Fantastic 4 and Rogue Nation on Tuesday. Liked the first half of F4, fell apart towards the end. A shame really. Loved RN, but I'd already seen it in the theater.

Ah. I really enjoyed the comedic side. Took itself a little less serious than the other movies, with the exception of Guardians.

Subscribed I just bought the plans for both the TUBA HT and the THTLP not sure which way to go just yet.
Can't go wrong either way. I think the LP is a bit more difficult due to the length?? Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Not saying it's a hard build, just more difficult then the THT. I had no problem building my THT, and was planning on building a second THT until I got an offer I couldn't refuse.

You do know Antman was one of the original Avengers. Along with Captain American, Thor, Ironman, Wasp and the Hulk. I take it you didn't like Antman? I just finished it and thought it was very well done.

Yeah. I have both of mine 12" from the wall, and both are in corners. I did some sweeps with REW and saw no difference in 18" vs 12". I like how they look better at 12", so that's where they stayed.
I can't wait to see the final product man!

Watched Red 2 (very blah!), then MI Ghost Protocol, and ended with The Fifth Element (the Atmos mix).
Really loving the second THT!!

Why are you doing this as a down firing vs how a regular THTLP works? This is strictly a question of curiosity.
Looking good man!! Or, are you building this for someone?

The Crown XLS1502 or 2502 would be all the power you need and you'd save a lot of money. I will eventually be buying 2 of the XLS1500s or 1502s for my LCR. I like the 1502s better because they're black and have a sensitivity switch.
Nah, it's not like you have to use all of it. :)Although, my goodness, that's a $1,300 class D amp that only has 250 watts per channel. I'd be looking at Crown DriveCore 2's before I spent that. I'm running 18's off the 2502, plenty of power for towers. Most people love them for hi-fi applications, only bad thing I've ever heard is that when using super high efficient cinema speakers like 100+ db actual efficiency, there's more of a noise floor in terms of hissing than is ideal. Otherwise, you could get a cheap Crown 1002 that would hang with that kind of power. Some places even have the old 1000 on blowout for like $199. If you spent $1,300 on a class D amp it better be flat at 5 hz at 4,000 watts or something such as SpeakerPower.Rotel also has a cheaper class D amp (RB-1572) rated at 250 watts but I think that might be too much power.

I'd take the 18's. Or, if you wanted to go bigger, a few 21's would be a nice compromise between the 18 or 24.
The 24 just requires too big of a cab. Although I'm sure they're awesome.

Your room isn't huge, but is it sealed? Meaning, does it open up to other rooms in the house or is it a dedicated room. I would go with a 15" or 18". No replacement for displacemeant. I'd check out parts express, they have sub kits. Might be much better bang for your dollar.

Yes, loads of output. Not enough output. Working to get a second THT. Should meet all my bass needs.
Horn subs are an excellent way to get output. I always enjoy reading Luke's post on AVS.

Unbelievable. It's kinda of ridiculous how much bass those mains put out when he runs them full range. That's what I'm talkin about. How does it sound?
They are really clean also. Just an amazing sound.

Yes, 8 21" to go with the Othorn.
Wow,I thought that I use to be mental....
He is a bass head. Plus, he loves building new subs.
Heres a link to his mains

It is. Which is exactly why I went away from sealed and ported subs. Not enough output. Working to get a second THT. Should meet all my bass needs.
That is a big room for one sub. If you teeth are rattling then it sounds like enough!I have a regular THT and I'm good down to 15hz in my 4500 cu ft basement.
Have a friend who use to have 2 Ghorns and 2 Othorns in a room half the size of my basement, maybe smaller. Holy crap!!! He sold his 2 Ghorns and is building 4 dual opposed 21". Yes, 8 21" to go with the Othorn. Which, also have a 21" driver. Can't wait to experience that.

Yikes. Love earlier Tool and Perfect Circle. Would love to see them live, but with that enthusiasm....no thanks.

In case anybody was interested the THT does not need a high pass filter as long as the recommended drivers or similar is used.
Maximum cone excursion happens @ 22Hz (tuning frequency) and the design is thermal limited not X-max limited.
The exception would be if a lower than 10mm X-max driver is used, then you may run into problems but one should know not to go overboard with voltages.
I've pushed my single THT to crazy limits....uncomfortable limits. Not distortion, just copious amounts of teeth rattling, house vibrating bass.
-
My ear....and the tones I've run through the Tubas.... is telling me that they don't go much deeper than my 30's (36hz).
Now I know why...
That should help....a lot! Good call Jason!!

SWL, are you saying your THTLP won't go lower than 36hz? That doesn't sound right. THTLP should go into the 23hz range before room gain.
I have a regular THT and I'm good down to 15hz in my 4500 cu ft basement.

Watched Episode IV last night. Well, the changes weren't awful in this one - except Greedo shooting first and not Han. That still doesn't sit well with me. I think a few scenes are unnecessary and don't add anything to the movie, but don't detract nfrom it either. I will say I've never seen it look so good or sound so good. Nice lower end, very full sounding. Empire is up tonight. I'm really rather enjoying myself with these; having watched the original versions of IV, V, VI just a few months ago.
Somewhat related to Movies, Blu-ray & HT in general. Here's a pretty cool & unique approach that Star Wars fans can hang framed art in the HT. These classic Greek sculpture Star Wars mach-up are the creation of artist (simulated name) Travis Durden. All images are purely Photoshop creations, based on classic marble sculptures from the Louvre. Kinda cool. Prints range from $70-$480 (US) & can be purchased here:

The clipping wasn't Godzilla bad.
I really like this Godzilla and didn't notice any clipping. It just shows, one guys garbage is another guys treasure, lol.

Yeah they drop off pretty fast. But, as you know he didn't build them to go low. They're huge now, lol. No room for anything bigger....lol
