  1. This hobby / passion is all encompassing! I have been voraciously reading everything I can find. The path I have chosen is great speakers, then great amp, then on down the line. I am at the amp part. I think like Nelson Pass does, but admittedly I am no where near as laser focused on amplification. So in that realm I regard him as the the PWK of the amp world! Where others "flim flam" around, Mr Pass, goes for the kill shot straight away. To that end, It seems to me his accomplishments are truly with out equal.... indeed IMHO no other amp comes close to his.... at least that is what the time spent reading portends. With that said, please share your likes and dislikes of the NP's first watt products pouring into the khorns inputs! I am trying to decide between the F5, F6, soon to be released F7, the Sit2 or even the sit1 should something come available on the used market. I am also super interested the the XA30.8. I think the dot eight may be over-kill.......( for khorns). Yes I have read every review I could find on them. ( more than once actually) So other than your experience, I am relegated to buying and returns amps to Reno-hifi. ? ? **WATT SAY YOU ** ? the subject is 1st Watt "exotica" D I S C U S S !
  2. I am thinking this is a Klipsch Xover. How does it compare to Crites or ALK stuff?
  3. Hi Rog, I will get the pics on here over the next few days. My visit with Kevin was beyond awesome. I have made great friends for a life time in both you and him. SPEAKERS.... I was told that the badges are less than a year old. He did not tell me that when I bought the speakers. I have no way to know where they were built at this time. They look factory made ( looking in the bass speaker slot/opening). Yet to find and S/n's anywhere. Will continue to look. Brad, the guy I bought them from said the person he bought them from did not know much about them nor about the previous owner...who was the one that supposedly had them upgraded. They are Piano Black. BUT .... BUT the paint is not smooth and it does not look to be a factory finish. You can not see these defects in pics with out taking a special effort. I will try to catch the MANY imperfections. Of course I hope they are the real deal. OTOH, they sound very good. In fact, after attending a YANNI concert, two hours later I was playing the same music on the Khorns. It was close, real close. In some ways better. This is while driving the Khorns with a Yamaha Advantage 1030. I am in the process to get a Nelson Pass Amp. Looking at the F6, F7 ( in a few weeks) or even the mighty XA30.8.
  4. thanks tandom, how did you get them to post like that?
  5. I bought these used. So I have some questions. First... the back is closed in, but it looks like factory. These are supposed to 10 to 20 years old or older. I was told that Klipsch did not start closing in the back until recently. Whats gives? Could they have been upgraded at the factory? Does the factory do this? Second... this is a picture of one of the cross-overs. Is this a good one? I remember reading that some cross overs are not as good as others. The person I bought these from that the previous owned had them brought to current specs internally. This was done around the early 2000's. *** 3 pics of crossover *** http://s35.photobucket.com/user/Racegun/KHORNS%20CROSSOVERS/story the x-overs look rather nice to me, but looks don't aways mean that much. The caps look to of the modern type. I very much appreciate any and all knowledge you could send my way. FYI, they sound very very good ( even on my yamaha H.T. advantage 1030 125 wpc) and much better than my highly modified LaScalas low freq. sound reproduction.
  6. http://s35.photobucket.com/user/Racegun/KHORNS%20CROSSOVERS/story WHAT KIND of crossover is this? It is in my khorns! ( racegun is a former handle for comp. pistol shooting )
  7. any quick silver amps being used out there? http://www.quicksilveraudio.com/products/index.html
  8. As an Licensed Electronics tech and one who had to write his graduation paper on his favorite subject ( audiophile pursuits) I know about our hobby. OTOH, I had never given thought to having the possibility of having 600 watts running at idle most of the time to strive towards fidelity of the highest order. In case there is any doubt, I know full well that the Khorns do not need 600 watts. In fact I know they don't need 100 watts. I was wondering if 600 watt mono blocks could be employed safely. I think they can. Will i do that?....NO!! I found the QS horn mono blocks. As a few have said, one is more likely to harm speakers with a poor quality amp that is always clipping, and similar scenarios. I would have much preferred lower power SS, but they are so expensive. $2,000 is my limit for amplification. There are few and far between amps that fit into that price range. There is also the feeling for me anyway, that the pursuit of great sound does not have cause one to spend over $10,000 to have truly great sound. Thats more than a good used car & thats crazy IMHO. Even if I had money to throw around like that, I would not do it. I did listen to khorns on a 4 watt set amp. I had to turn the volume way up to get them to come alive. They were loud, but the sound was not clear. At lower levels, the bass just did not perform well. We then swapped out the SET tube amp for a 1970's ~ 1980... SS YAMAHA M80 250 WPC. Ran the exact same tests as before. The head room that the SS afforded sounded so much better that it gave rise to thinking about the 600 watt mono blocks ( less than $2k thank you very much). NOW YOU KNOW THE REST OF STORY ( as they say).
  9. I contacted Mike @ Quicksilver. we talked for a long time ( more than once) . I ordered the Mono block Horn set. IT fits in my budget and seems to be a good place to start. Thanks to RUSS69 who posted/ mentioned this company. I can try these for 10 days and return if I do not like. Win- win no matter how you look at it. I really wanted mono-blocks. I did not know QuickSilver existed. Further more Mike knows his stuff & is willing to back it up. The Horn set is specifically designed for speakers like the Khorns. To be transparent, all the recommendations here have been great. My first love is riding my Bacchetta CA2.0. Once I get the Khorns sorted, more of my free time will be spent staying in good cardio shape. ( 100 miles a weekend tends to do that). During my down time I can listen to my "TUNES" and smile/ loose liquid from my eyes. The khorns have done that to me a few times in this short period of time. Everyone here has been kind and generous. Thank you one and all. I will report back after spending time with the QS horn mono-block amps. It is now Wednesday night. Tomorrow night I am going to a "YANNI" concert. During the day I hope to audition Kevin's Incredible Klipsch collection. AGAIN ...THANKS everyone!
  10. russ69. at the quicksilver site i see they offer an amp for horns. DID YOU try those? HAS ANYONE ELSE tried those? again, please understand. I asked about the 600w mono-blocks for three reasons. I understand full well that our beloved klipsch are super efficient. For those of you unaware, i owned lascalas and A&S big ben. I performed up grades. Yes mid and high sounded great. Bass woeful. I do now have a pair of khorns. With my 125 watt yamaha HT aventage 1030 the khorns are beyond incredible! *** three reasons *** 1. providing the wattage for bass, tympani hits etc. 2. They have very good specs. Yes I know the truth is in the listening and therefore reason 3> ....3. emotiva offer trial and return if you do not like. ok well 4 reasons... i have heard so much about mono blocks ..... there fore i am relying on you my friends here to offer some ideas. Thus far some really good and much appreciated info. Please continue... the discussion is amps for k horns and bi and and tri amp possibilities. BTW, I live less than 25 miles from the largest collection of Klipsch speakers other than hope. I have been in communication with him. I will be going to his fortress of sound to listen very soon. He told me that stock k horns sound great. I agree!
  11. Yes. Would the XPA-1 mono block ( 600 wpc) sound better than the 300wpc xpa-2 gen 2 i can tell you this first hand. With a Stealth dc-1 > XPA-2 > khorns, and the usb connect to my mac book pro with 15 foot usb cable, and the pause button pressed on iTunes, i can turn the amp all the way up and you can put your ear to the min and high and HEAR NOTHING!!!!!! I think that is pretty good! What do y'all think?
  12. I found this. What do you guys think of this one? http://www.parts-express.com/behringer-dcx2496-ultradrive-pro-digital-24-bit-96-khz-loudspeaker-management-system-cros--248-669 CHRIS, PLEASE RECOMMEND SOME AMPS! I wish I could afford some used nelson pass stuff from Reno Hi Fi. But that means even at used prices over $5,000 for two amps. What about the Nelson AMP CAMP AMP i was reading about in DIY? It make so much sense to separate energy when it is at a low level, then distribute it to amplifiers. It is Illogical to pump power into yet another device that must separate and also deal with power and its attendant, capacitance, inductance and impedance issues. I can not thank everyone enough for the advise. I will be calling Kevin today after 5:30. I want to go listen as soon as possible. Thank you Rodger!!! CHRIS... Please recommend amps. The way I think I am beginning to understand is this: PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG! With Bi-amp you have an amp for low and and amp for high. Each amp with left and right out puts. 4 points of connection to speakers. With tri-amp, you have an amp for low, an amp for mid, and an amp for high and there for 6 points of connection. IS THIS CORRECT?
  13. I pm'd you back, but its 12:30 am. I am exhausted. Been trying to understand this all day long. I have to work tomorrow... bit it is not a busy day thus far. I fix ATMS and similar devices.
  14. Chris, Thank you for your comments. I relate to what you are saying and find that this solution seems to be the best way to go. So please explain what I would need, and where I can get the equipment. I WILL BE BUYING KHORNS this week. Found them on CL in Baton Rouge, La. They sounded very good. From what I have been reading ( most of the day today) I will need 6 amps , and one active cross over for each side. Right? What else?
  15. It was upon those line that I was thinking about the 600 watt mono blocks . Ok. Here is the deal 1. I am a newby compared to most guys in here. 2. I was spoiled by my Snells and nakamichi stuff back in the early 80's. 3. Reading all this stuff is frustrating. At 63, i am looking for rather easy and quick fix to get great sounding music again. 4. So please be helpful and understanding. BobK, what wattage then would be appropriate with reverence to that article? I am curious just for knowledge sake. I would prefer less power with the idea that it will cost less. But the mono blocks emotiva has are 600 watts. They have very good specs and you can try and send back if you do not like. I really like the idea of triamp or bi amp. I have no idea how that is implemented. I would like to know how this is done.
  16. Chris, Are you saying that any amp that puts out over 100 watts will damage the tweeters?
  17. FIRST A FEW FACTS, so you can better understand my question. I have been a Lascala Owner for about 2 yrs. I was afforded the high honor of listening to Khorns being driven by Yamaha M80 Vintage amp, ( ~ 260watts) I NOW WANT KHORNS!!!! >>Anyway, I AM WONDERING ABOUT POWER & HOW MUCH IS SAFE VS WHAT MAKES FOR BETTER SOUND. With my back ground in electronics I understand that any device will only pull the amount of power it was designed to pull. I also understand that you can turn up the power to insane amounts ( for that particular ) device and burn/ruin it. I see Khorns are rated to use 100 watts continuos and 400 peak. ( not that one would ever listen at that level for sure) I also think that when the woofer needs power to move that air, it needs a great deal more than more mid and tweeter. 1. Does it work that way? 2. If one were to connect a pair of 600 watt mono blocks ( in search of that holy grail of ultimate sound) , would that give more headroom than a 200W amp? ............ As long as the 600w mono blocks were not turned up to far, would it be safe to use on Khorns? My thinking is during peak passages where the mid and tweeter were needing 5~10 watts ( to reproduce their frequency range) ..... the Tympani hit would need 100 ~ 200 watts for that brief split second to reproduce the music faithfully. SO.... If the 600 mono blocks were not being pushed, the almost limitless headroom the speaker electronics were demanding could result in great fidelity and so on and so forth.

  19. note the super price reduction. Save thousands over new.
  20. Klipsch LaScala and S.E.T. Tube amp deal of a life time. Both for only $1790.00 Amp is from Highly Regarded AMPSANDSOUND. The sound is so sweet, you might just need to keep kleenex close by… it sounds that good. Thanks for looking Dave Lafayette, La.
  21. http://lafayette.craigslist.org/ele/5441344164.html if you need anything else pic wise i would be happy to take some pics and email them to serious buyers
  22. The wood is the black finish. I am not sure if they call it piano black? Yes, Pics do wonders. I will have time to get some on here today. Not sure if I understand how yet. Will give it my best shot. on one spkr the s/n is LSBK17-99060002, the other is 01 ( last two digits) I think that means the are 1999. I purchased them from the second owner. He did not realize what he had and knew nothing about audiophile disciplines. From the way they sounded at his place to the way they sound at mine... seems like a $40,000 difference for the good. Selling because I want K-Horns & Mac tube amp & $4,000 turntable. I might have to settle for less, but that is my goal anyway. This system does not have that much time because I work 7 days a week and have for almost 2 years. I was unemployed for 5 years so I am trying to catch up. The few minutes I had, to unwind and listen would bring me to tears... they sound that good. Any other spare time I had was spent riding my Bacchetta CA2.0. Yes I am in good shape now!
