Also, Claude, can the 1/4 pie be used vertically?

Yes. This is one of my side channels.

This is one of Claude's original prototypes. It is a little smaller than the current design.

Dang, even vertical the WAF is a negative number. :o:P

True. However mine live in the basement so its ok.

They look a bit better vertical and painted up a bit better. Here are the front mid and right. Still not going to look right in the living room though.

Trom, those look great, nicely done. :emotion-21:

But I'm afraid in our front room, they'd have sleeping on couch written all over them.:o

  2. I have decided to use the jbl 2242's for bottoms as they are flat until around 320hz then start dropping. I'm going to try my hand at building a set of the 233hz fc tractrix horns that jwc designed. This would allow me to crossover low enough to meet up with the jbls. I have a couple of minidsps that I will use as crossovers and go full active.

I'm curious, what midrange driver/horn combo are you using to cross that low?

  3. Great………………indeed!

Finally got a chance to play this yesterday, in fact I played it 3 times.

Very nice, dramatic, with huge dynamic range. My 17 year old son, Matt, really liked it. His terms were "powerful and eerie." I wish I had had as good of taste in music when I was Matt's age, but then I didn't spend 6 years in orchestra playing violin either.

Doc, thanks for the heads up on this. :emotion-21:

  4. "Nice. But why the bullnose vs the sharp V?"

    Looks.

" Looks like width is wider than LS??"

Same width and depth as the Belle.

" Are you going to use K-33 woofer?"

No, PPSL with four 8's in a plenum. Although it will accept a 15 if desired. The four 8's sound much cleaner than a single 15.

So this is a complete custom horn. Pretty cool. :emotion-21:

  5.

1/2" bending ply (3 layer IIRC) and 3/4" kerfcore both work well. But you can kerf plywood yourself pretty easily.

You are correct, kerf cuts work excellent with most plywoods. Can layers of thinner plywood work also?

Certainly, 1/8" ply bends well as long as your radius isn't too tight. Of course you also need to devise a clamping strategy or use a vacuum bag system.

The last time I bought kerfcore it was pricey, as in more expensive than 1/2" bending ply. But the kerfcore was 3/4" thick, so in some applications that might matter.

  6. The question is... Is Analog Dead? Not yet, but it's circling the drain. Vinyl sales are at 6 million/year while CD sales are at 250 million/year, both for 2013. Digital downloads are more than double CD sales. Saying that digital dominates the marketplace is an understatement.

Those with a vinyl fetish are quick to point out that vinyl sales are up 600% since 2005. Still, 600% of near nothing is not much relative to the total annual sales of music. The total annual sales of all music purchases is over 1.8 billion/year.

    .

If sales are going up and pressing plants are running at full capacity then how can one say "its circling the drain?"

Will it over take digital? No way, but it doesn't have to to remain viable. Most music today is listened to through ear buds off an ipod, I wouldn't call that superior just because of its wide use.

  7. Uh, Rick……….. I'm sorry but I forgot to tell you - if you're really into rap music, I'm afraid you're not going to like any of Bernie Herrmann's stuff. Good thing is Amazon return policy is great.  Here's hoping you like it. :unsure2:

Nah, not much on rap or hip hop, too old I guess. No I think the soundtrack will be great.

  8.

Nothing better than a post that is loaded with facts. Hat's off to you Mr. ( Daddy) Smith or Thad Dad or maybe Thaddy Daddy.....

My wife is an RN and I'll be starting an RN program within the next year or so. Facts are crucial in the healthcare realm.

Nice Thad, so is mine, has her masters in oncology nursing (or whatever you call it.)

    This is a bad deal.

  9. Rick,  yes the 299 Scott is excellent (love those massive trannies!)  Let me know what you think of that piece by Bernard Herrmann if you get it. I'd like to know what you think. If you do like it, I have some more surprises for you.

Doc, is this the version you referenced? http://smile.amazon.com/Vertigo-Original-Motion-Picture-Re-recording/dp/B0000014WI/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1412168256&sr=1-2&keywords=vertigo+soundtrack

And yes, theres no substitute for big arn! B)
