  1. Chris, Thanks for the input. I see you have also opted for a 2 channel system dedicated to music, pumped by a 300B tube Cary, though a set of Cornwalls. Very nice. Counting Mobile, the good Dr. Edgar("Because it sounds good.")and yourself, the original Rega CDP is way out in front, 3-0. Now the problem is locating a good used one. 2. mobile, That's correct. The second 2 channel system of the Cornwalls, they turn out to be '83 instead of '80 vintage, the Eico, and "X" CD player or "X" turntable. I am in no way unhappy with the Tjoeb99. The new, matched Bugle Boys 6922s from Richardson are an outstanding addition to it.(Hmmm, I wonder what Telfunkens would do???) At present, the budget says that only a CD player, or only a turntable is possible with that system for now. I know I would be pleased with another Tjoeb, but a Rega would provide an alternate perspective, tune my ears,.... yada, yada, yada. On the other hand, I have more vinyl choice than CDs, so a turntable could be the more pragmatic option. Hopefully a little income tax refund will fund the purchase, or repay my bank account if the right deal pops up sooner. So I'm being open, examining possibilites....etc. The price of a used original Rega CDP is "sort of" within budget allowances, less than a new Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000, more than a used Tjoeb99, more than a budget MMF or used turntable. Another decision to agonize over. Yes, a USED Rega CDP is a possibility. 3. mobile, I'm thinking and wishing into the near future. I've read very positive reviews of the Rega 2000, but you seem to prefer the original. There must be some very good reasons. There seem to be more used 2000's for sale counting ebay and AudiogoN. That alone can be a vote for the original. The original Rega is a sure $200 less used than the 2000 used. Is the 2000 model worth the additional dollars in your opinion? Thanks Klipsch out
  4. mobile, mdeneen, -cowabunga and stoked, Let me clearly state this simple fact. Whenever I read post by mobile and mdeneen, I learn something. My "hi-fi" interest are driven by the music I love to hear. So mdeneen is so correct with this statement. quote: Amps ultimately have to plug into speakers - your speakers - which ultimately have to play into ears - your ears with your music. When mobile states; quote: But when right, and when partnered with complimentary components and the right speakers, it is simply like no other. And the combination of a properly set up vinyl, SET, and horns system can just be amazing and only comparible to a live performance. Alas, it is the only in home setup that had every truly made me feel the music is equal to a live performance. Everything else sounds electronic by comparison. please, a healthy dose of respect is in order. There is a certain magic with this combination for those who choose to investigate. One of the two friends that stopped by this last weekend told me he can't block the experience and sound from his mind and he's not satisifed with his current setup. He want's it to sound more "open and warm". I did not sell him or try to sell him any point of view. His ears are talking to him. So let's' not stop the debate. I am one who appreciates the granular distinctions of vocabulary and points of view. I consider being a member of this forum and reading the information you share with us invaluable and have achieved the benefits mobile has been a proponent of. -cowabunga and stoked, once you decide what you want to achieve with your system, by setting some value in good old dollars to achieve it, you should not be caught in a bidding war with anyone. Have alternative pieces that will satisfy your objectives or be patient enough to wait for another opportunity and a similar piece to surface. My Moondog purchase was not my first attempt. The previous one was not lost to a higher bidder, but to owner deciding to keep them. So be patient. I attempt to update the two post mentioned to encourage others to at least explore other possibilities and "go for it". Your choice of harware may vary. Last, mobile, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". Please continue to dispell the myths and misconceptions of tube amplication. Some of us will drink, others will walk away. That's ok too. We're all richer for your endeavors. And DAMN, I don't know how you maintain all this 411, but THANK YOU! Let the bricks and flames coming my way begin! Klipsch out. PS. 5. henrys and mhos(aka Clipped and Shorn) Without joining the debate, and quickly provide answers your questions, quote: : For phono use only can one go directly to an amp from a phono stage OR must the phono stage first go to the line stage and then to the amp? In my case the answer is yes. I was able to use my PP-1 phono preamplifier to go directly to the Moondog monoblocks to connect my turntable as a source and play my vinyl. I did this before my line stage arrived. quote: Eg. is the line stage only necessary if one is using inputs other than phono (CD, Tuner, Video audio, etc.)? The answer is Yes. Though I did opt to move in a dramatic fashion to upgrade amplification, that was based on a golden oportunity to purchase an exceptional pair of Welborne Labs 2A3 Moondogs. The remaining pieces of the system are quality pieces, not "high end" as judged by cost. Hopefully, as I learn and evolve, so will my ability to discern any impact/benefits additional hardware expenditures will deliver relavant to an improved audio experience, not because it's high end hardware. I attempted to be practical, economicly speaking, when assembling my 2 channel system. My limitless desire to hear the music in the best possible audio environment, was indeed tempered by the limitations of my bank account. Klipsch out. PS. Read two post in this forum. 6. Updated post copied from topic "Amperex 6DJ8 Tubes & Eico HFT-90 Tuner Questions?" mobile, My cartridge remark was more like a "where else am I going to spend money" remark. The Elys is nuetral, smooth and really does a fine job. It's a $225 list item and certainly not dogmeat! I do think though that maybe a MC or maybe a Grado MM might be more "exciting" given the selection of music I play. So I'm not unhapppy with the cartridge. Remember I got the Rega 3 turntable, RB300 tonearm, and the Elys cartride for only $390. I can't kick myself for that. I can experiment with upgrades when more cash is flowing in than out. The PP-1 is really very good. It provided my first taste of the 2A3 Moondogs, and it let me hear the music intimately. Initially the Cary seemed to not let the same music excitement pour through. Rolling in the Mullard 6CA4s seem to add the detail. Rolling the "Gold Aero" 12AU7A's for the '58 RCA Black plate 12AU7s has brought back the vibrancy of the vinyl. All of the Mullard and RCA tubes are new. The PP-1 has three Amperex 12AX7s, made in Holland, branded Fisher. I plan to try NOS Mullard and Telefunken 12AU7s in the Cary eventually to see if I gain anything. I've got Miles at Carnegie Hall 1961 on as I write this. Absolutely no complaints with this combination as it is now. Maybe hearing something else in the loop could change that opinion, but this is all I know so far and I feel no "I shoulda' bought something else' remorse. The Tjoeb99 is now outstanding with the Bugle Boys from Richardson. I think Kevin Deal is wrong about the Amperex 7308 he calls the "best upgrade". The Bugle Boys have far more detail and smoother soundwise. Well mastered CD's can give the vinyl a run for the money with this combination. The 2A3 Moondogs are just incredible. They just make these Belles sound sooo sweet and effortless. Niether amps nor speakers seem challenged by anything. Crystal clear, nothing abrasive to the sound of anything, regardless of volume, from vinyl or CD. The Cary has never needed to pass 9 o'clock to fill the entire house with sweet non fatigueing music. The Belles height places the high freqs right about ear level so it's a dynamite listening experience when sitting about 12 feet away. Some times, as now, I'm on the second floor. The music fills the wide open room below AND flows to the second floor where bedrooms are located. I'm trying to be patient with rolling in the '43 2A3 RCA to the Moondogs. I want to know exactly where they have added to the overall sound picture by letting all these pieces work together a bit longer. Man, I hope you get to the left coast sometime so you can "Take Five" to hear this "system". Maybe I'll have all the upgraded interconnects in place by then, maybe not. Nevertheless, I think you'll be surprised, and pleased, with how well it works together, and upgrade suggestion are always welcome. As for the Rega CDP...I'll start on the other 2 channel system with the Cornwalls and HF81 as soon as I get back from my sons hockey tournament in LA after the Presidents holiday weekend. That system may only have a CD player for a lo-o-ong time, and probably the time to look to purchasing a Rega CDP. It would be interesting to hear the Tjoeb99 and the Rega go at it eh. BTW, you never did tell me what you knew about the "Gold Aero" brand tubes. Well, they're in boxes now. The '43 RCA's were a major find. Klipsch out

  9. shapeshifter, Congrats on the 7189 Bugle Boys! If you don't like the Amperex tubes from Richardson, I'll purchase them from you so you won't be stuck. I like them well enough to have an extra set. I understand the 7308s I have from Kevin cost $40.00 each. They did not cost me anything over the price I paid for my Tjoeb99, though I'm sure it was factored in. I just happen to think the Bugle Boys sound better. I'm really interested to know your opinion when they finally arrive and you roll them in. You'll have plenty of time with the 7308s by then. I also felt getting the match pair with 24 hour burn in worth the few dollars additional. Klipsch out.
  10. mobile, I know that frustration. One rather late night when trying to post, I inadvertently hit shift-spacebar instead of shift right arrow to highlight some test I wished to edit. 11. From Bi-wiring Belles. mobile, Cary SLP90L updates. I still have the two 1960 Brimar 6CA4 tubes in the HF81. My two never used NOS Mullard 6CA4s have been rolled into the Cary to replace the Slyvania 6CA4s. I think it is an improvement.(I have additional Mullard 6CA4s for the HF81.) Regarding the 4 12AU7As in the Cary. The current 12AU7As are branded "Gold Aero", have a gold colored top, gold script and letering, and "made in germany" printed on them. Brendan at Tube World has not heard of them. Have you? I have '58 RCA Black plate 12AU7s which I plan to roll in unless you feel the Gold Aeros are better. Eventually hoping for NOS Mullards, Telefunkens. Moondog update. I'm cleaning the '43 2A3 RCAs.(Globes and posts)Plan to roll these sometime early this week. I had two friends stop by this weekend to help move a shelf case system to the my sons room on 2nd floor. Of course their payback was freshly brewed beer from the local brewpub, snacks, and listening to some jazz. Both have a large collection of jazz. One used to sell stereo gear and Klipsch speakers. Both left saying it was the most "revealing" system they had experienced. I will add getting some pics done for posting on my to do list. Klipsch out.(Music's in.) PS. The HF81 is off-line waiting for the Cornwalls to arrive.

  13. Wes, quote: Getting smooth sweet sound from mids & highs with impressive bottom end. As my son would say, "That's what I'm talking about." The NOS rolling makes for very impressing sounds as mobile said. My HF81 presently is using Mullards in all sockets except the EZ81's where I'm still using the 1960 Brimar's which are very good. The EL84's are Webcor branded, made by Mullard EL84's. I have some Mullards to add to the EZ81 spot also, just haven't felt an urgent need there. Two, never used Mullard EZ81s that were going to be used in the Eico have now been allocated to my Cary preamp used with the Moondogs and I'm very pleased with the result. My remaining Mullard EZ81's can be added to the Eico later. BTW NOS Telefunkens are very expensive new, same for Bugel Boy. I was able to purchase a quad of new original Eico branded EL84s from a kit that were made in Holand. NOS Mullard EL84s I have not found except at Tube World and could not afford either. As for the Bugle Boys, check out the article on the Upscale site "Read Dick Olsher's review at Enjoy The Music.com" after clicking on the button; "Ah Tjoeb '99 CD Player - Replaced by the Njoe Tjoeb 4000, but good info still here". I have the 7308's, 1968 vintage, which I used for several weeks, but I do not think they sound as rich as the Bugle Boy matched pair from Richardson that are in there now. Matching them required a 24 hour burn in so they sounded good from the very first use. My HF81 has been offline since Friday because I have the 2A3 Moondogs powering the Belles with input from the Tjoeb99 and Rega 3. I can't wait to pickup my Conwalls to get the Eico back on line. The Eico is not 2A3 Moondogs, but operating on all cylinders and stocked with NOS tubes, I definitely endorse it as one hell of a piece of hardware that really sounds good. I'll say it again, I'll never sell mine. So glad to hear from someone else enjoying what the HF81 brings to the table. Kilpsch out. This message has been edited by jazman on 02-03-2002 at 05:42 PM
  14. MBM135, Just to add perspective on the $850 price of the Forte. A couple of questions should be answered first. Is cosmetic condition the criteria for this purchase or sonic condition? Is the type of finish very important to room decor? If you can be flexible on those factors, I think more speaker an be purchased for that amount of money. With careful shopping, Heritage speakers can be found. Cornwalls can be had for that price. LaScala's can also be found at or near that price. Forte enthusiast, please do not throw bricks or flames my way. I am not saying anything negative about Forte's, and never will. It was only a perspective injection. Klipsch out.
  15. MBM135, I had two Belles shipped from PA to the SF Bay area. The seller was willing to have us both check out freight rates and use the least expensive. We eventually had him put each on it's own pallet, wrapped in bubble wrap, styrofoam sheets, appliance box cardboard, and used a freight trucking company. Shipping by truck, a long distance, is not cheap. Klipsch in. (how's that mobile?)
  16. Also posted in "Welbourne Labs...jazmans amps" Hey forum, All the dots have been connected. I finally have a very respectable 2 channel audio system. The Welborne Labs 2A3 Moondogs are making wonderful music as I write this. It's taken a couple of months, but worth all the agonizing, net surfing, reading, cross referencing, late night sessions on the computer, lots of luck, advice from mobile. I don't think anything I say can truly express how good this system of components sounds. That's the good news. It's all connected. The other news, instead of bad news is,... there's more to be done. 1. Upgrade most of the interconnect cables. 2. Roll the tubes that arrived with the Cary to more stately offerings. The present Sylvania 6CA4s most go. Mullards most likely replacement since I have some new ones. 3. Upgrade to a MC or a different MM cartridge instead of the Rega Elys. 4. Roll the Sovtecks for RCA 1943 2A3 Black plates. Yea mobile, would you believe I found them new, in their time worn boxes, on ebay? 5. One day in the future, add my Akai Reel to Reel deck. For tonight however, it's Jazz LP after LP. I don't care how many trips I make to the turntable. Vinyl rules in my household. And yes, vinyl really IS the sound, especially with these components. Mobile knows what I'm talking about! 2 CHANNEL SOUND! Moondogs are abolutely delicious amplifiers! Klipsch out. PS. 18. Wes, The Amperex 6DJ8 tube may not offer an advantage. The Bugle Boy branded Amperex 6922 from Richardson Electrics will make a difference in the way the Tjoeb99 sounds. From what I understand, they have the license for these Amperex tubes now. The price is 28.20 but I paid extra for a matched pair. I can't locate my receipt so I probably paid less than $79, probably more like $69. There used to be a page that listed all of their Bugle Boy stock, but it is not displaying today. This is the url to the page that leads to the 6922. http://catalog.rell.com/rellecom/scripts/grouppage.asp?product=798&T1=0&T2=+&SK1=+&SK2=+ Klipsch out.
  19. shapeshifter(wes) Glad you enjoy the comments. My purpose is to chronicle some of what I'm experiencing while building this 2 channel system. Not all of the details, but most of the highlights with the hope someone else can relate, or maybe encourage someone else considering embarking on a similar path to "go for it". It's been fun, intense, but all worth it. I really can't say enough good things about the Welborne Labs 2A3 Moondogs. They were not part of the initial "budget", and for sure they were a spike up in the budget, but they are.... WORTH EVERY PENNY!!The Moondogs have really become the centerpiece, but the Rega 3 turntable, Tjoeb99, modified PP-1, and now the Cary SLP90L are great supporting cast to pump into the Belles. I had tried once before to purchase a pair of Moondogs only to have the owner decide to keep them. All of this was inspired by my experience with the HF81. I am probably the easiest convert to tubes mobile has encountered, but it was easy to accept what my ears were experiencing. Well, I've got the rest of the day off and plan to roll four Mullard output tubes in the HF81 to replace the EI Yugo quads that are presently there to see if I can raise the bar further for the HF81's performance. Then I'll work to place and connect some of the final pieces of this 2 channel system. Stay tuned. Klipsch out.
  20. wes, I have a Tjoeb99 and have recently rolled in Amperex BubleBoy 6922 tubes. I also have the stock Phillips JAN 6922 and Amperex 7308 tubes. Of course I purchased the Tjoeb99 used with the 7308s as part of the purchase. That purchase is part of my Bi-wire Belles post. Started with the original 6922s to get a feel for their sound qualities. After 2 weeks of lisitening every day, I rolled to the Ampeprex 7308. A nice improvement in the dynamics. At the time I first connected the Tjoeb99 I also began the hunt for BugleBoy tubes based on a rec by edster00. Tried Kevin Deal and he sent me to Richardson Electronics because he only sells them to people who buy their Tjoeb player from him. From Richardson I was able to order a matched pair for slight additional cost. Check out my comments in jazmans amps from last nights listening session. These tubes are the ones to use in the Tjoeb99 without a doubt. I believe my cost with shipping, and the cost of matching was around $79. They ship the test results sheets with the tubes. I hope this helps. Klipsch out.
  21. mobile, The Cary arrived today. Would you believe it looks better than the photo. Gold faceplate, chrome deck. The sale tag in the manual reads; DEMO SLP90L 24K Gold Option Oil Cap Upgrade Matched Gold Aero's Outboard Power Retail $2600 Sale @$1500.00 That's what the previous owner paid. This Cary should be quite fine. The units with a phono stage used 12AX7 tubes. My PP-1 Phono Preamp uses 12AX7s which hopefully will be a good match. Listening to the Moondogs last night was really incredible. I've played the Kind of Blue LP countless times, but never felt like I was in the studio while it was being played like I did last night. It's very difficult to describe how real it seemed. I'd better cut the description here so I don't babble praise for the Moondogs for the next 1/2 hour. This evening I'm using the Eico-Tjoeb99 combo to have a reference point when connecting the CD player through the Cary. The Eico sounds wonderful after a week with it's full load of NOS tubes. The AH!Tjoeb has had the BugleBoy 6922's in for a few days and Ed is correct about them being the best upgrade. They seem to add/extend the top and bottom end, and bring CD's a close to vinyl, open sound. I'm going to roll the HF81 output tubes from EI Yugo to 4 closely matched Webcor labeled Mullards tomorrow to determine how much better the Eico can get while I work preparing and completing all the Moondog/Cary connections. I'm having so much fun while enjoying the music. I'm going to do a Rega TT motor upgrade and a tonearm wiring upgrade real soon. Klipsch out. 22. mike l., Check your email. I won't get back online until late tonight. Klipsch out.
  23. A road trip. Hmmm. There's one in Walnut Creek, Stereo Unlimited, and I'm sure there are a couple in SF, one on Union St, the other near the Embarcadero, but I haven't ventured to SF lately. The road trip sounds like a great idea but I have to work it around my sons hockey road trips each weekend until the end of their season in a couple of months. Klipsch out.
  24. mike l., After I get the Cornwalls home and listen to them for a while, I may decide that I've been much too fortunate throughout this entirely massive upgrade project I've undertaken and decide not to build out another system. Believe me, I feel very fortunate to have the Belles and Moondogs as the core to a very nice 2 channel system along with the other pieces I've found and added, many the result of mobiles recs. If I do decide to sell, I'll give you the first shot to buy them. I paid $609 for them along with a gving him a new pair of Quintets, and I won't jack up the price. Chances are, I'll listen to them and fall in love, again. Klipsch out.
  25. This pair of Welborne Labs 2A3 Moondog monoblocks is everthing mobile has said they are. They provide a moving musical experience. I am posting this copy of my last post to Bi-wiring Belles. From Bi-Wiring Belles 1/30/02: Tonight I decided not to wait any longer to hear the Welborne Labs 2A3 Moondogs I'd purchased even though the Cary SLP90L preamp is due to arrive later today according to FedEx. The modified PP-1 has been here for several days. The 3 Chineese 12AX7 tubes were immediately rolled for 3 vintage Apmerex 12AX7 tubes. It's been powered on and waiting to be put in service. The Moondogs are given power and time to warm up as I prepare dinner for my son and I. After dinner, the Rega 3 turntable is moved to the Moondogs component shelves. After three LP's, I'm all smiles on the outside, totally excited inside my soul, and ready to listen to music all night long, but I know I can't because I have to get up at dawn. This is what mobile has been talking about folks. SET amps, Heritage horns, and vinyl. What an incredible formula. The Moondogs, the Belles, the Rega 3 and the PP-1 make music together. Miles, Coltrane, Cannonball, Wayne Shorter, Branford Marsalis, have never sounded so good, and I've been using Klipsch speakers for many years though I've never owned Belles. As good as this is now, it's going to get even better when the Cary is added, the Tjoeb99 with new matched Amperex Bugle Boy 6922 tubes, premium cables because I believe that if better cabling increases computer network reliability, ....you get the picture. RCA 2A3 Black plates coming soon to help in the output department. Achieving tonight's music experience is what this post was about. The Moondogs are clearly a new level of amplification for me, which combined with the other components has completed a two channel system that will satisfy my ears for many years to come. Thanks Kelly for all of your help and, all the other members of this Forum. I could babble on for hours and days to come, and probably will, but I want to hear one more cut before I sleep. Long live vinyl! Klipsch out. 1975 Belles Rega 3 TT; Rega 300 tonearm; Elys cartridge Asusa modified PP-1 phono preamplier Welborne Labs 2A3 Moondogs monoblocks to be added AH!Tjoeb 99 Cary SLP90L
