Certainly need bracing. People have had those things collapse.

I see how that might happen.

The key is to assemble the whole thing very carefully and use your best judgement in tightening the surrounding screws that hold the shelve together. Use wood glue if you wanna be extra precocious.

I had them for years now and the shelves are packed with records. Not even a tiny amount of sagging or anything peculiar going on.

  2. You paid a very good price in European terms.

We have a good pair in local adds costing 2.000 EUR, but due to high price this pair sits here for more than a year now.

Sansui could match well with H2.

Congratulations and wish you well with your pair 🙂

    looks expensive

    Well, yes and no.

Thing is those components are not so cheap. But I only need one cable and wanted to do it right as much as my wallet permits. Buying everything separately and doing connection part myself saved me at least 30% of the price Van den hull asks for the complete cable. And I don't know the quality of connectors they use.

  4. Finally put it all together.

It has been awhile since I messed around with cables, and here is the thing of connecting three wires together (3 for L, and 3 for N - seven wires with a ground wire). Since the wires are positioned in a star configuration, all are different lengths when you try to connect them together ... and the space inside the connector is not that big. But one cut here and another there, and we are done 😊

What Musical Fidelity unit do you have?

    M1SDAC

    https://www.musicalfidelity.com/m1sdac

An older unit, so probably does not measure that well by today standards. However, I took it because of the functionalities. It has a nice combination of analog and digital connectivity, a good headphone amp, and is a nice preamplifier. The only thing missing on my list are balanced connectors.

  6. A question here, sorry if it is already answered.

I am trying to make a power cable for hi-fi application. Under the outer protective coat the cable has a thick braided metal shielding.

Do I need to connect the shield of a cable to the ground wire before putting it in a connector?

I have been reading that in most applications the shield should be connected to ground wire at one end.

  7. Thanks a lot for the answers.

In the meantime I visited a few hi-fi shops nearby and talked a bit with salesmen.

Two things positive about CD players came up:

1 - standalone player can be used in "conservative" setup - without a DAC,

2 - good CD player can sound very well. I tried the entry level Yamaha CD player and Musical Fidelity M3 and M6 CD players, all in the same system. The difference going up the scale was pretty noticeable to my ears. Unfortunately, the difference in prices are very noticeable also.

As regards the transports, all good ones are usually more expensive than CD players.

However, the guy using this (https://www.advanceparis.com/en/produit/x-d500/)  says it is better than many expensive CD players he had in his system.

  8. I'm thinking of replacing my old CD player for 2-channel audio.

Been looking into dedicated audio CD player (entry class - Marantz 6007 etc), and then there is an option to get universal players that play many other formats including blu-ray (i.e. Panasonic DP-UB820EG-K, which is the same price category).

I see many forum members having such players (and not specifying CD players in their signatures). A few years ago Oppo was one of many good choices but now it is gone.

I like an option to play blu-rays and video, and IF 2-channel audio would not suffer I would opt going that route.

    Any advice on that?

With large speakers, in rooms unfavorable for them, it's not only that you don't hear everything they would be capable of but that you hear unsightly booming, so a very annoying addition that doesn't happen with small monitors in the same small room.

Exactly that. I managed to introduce some improvements by adding absorption acoustic foams in upper corners of the room, but that only cover frequencies to about 100-120 Hz. Lower than that I have problems.

  10. I can see how the order of importance regarding factors that could alter the sound varies from case to case.

Interaction of speakers and room proved maybe the most important factor in my environment.

Smallish and almost square room is limiting factor for sure. I had several sets of speakers in it, and "better" speakers just could not reveal its potential in that room (I had them playing in other peoples houses and in the shops, they surely played better there).

So, it is a choice of playing music with better/bigger speakers and not hearing all they can do, and using a set of small studio monitors and placing them in a way to avoid the room boundaries (much cheaper option).  Both are not truly hy-fi.

Yes it would but I am a strap guy.  I have one watch with a bracelet and quickly switched it out for a provided vintage leather strap.

    Same here.

I love how bracelets look, but on my skinny/bony wrist they all cause pain while wearing. Unless I find one that matches my wrist perfectly with no play. I know there are adjustable ones but did not bother to search for it. So either strap or leather.

  12. Hi Dave, nice to see all that analog stuff.

Until covid I shoot mostly film, and after that the prices of film have gone mad.

Cherish that Kodachrome64 in the fridge, nowadays it is worth a fortune.

These days I mostly use digital (D750), but occasionally I put film in my oldies and go for a walk. Last week, and after one year of pause, I loaded F5 and enjoy every minute of it. Hard to explain why analog, it is comparable with turntables in audio. Just has its charm I guess.

I has been two years now since I purchased this new.

With no adjustments since then, it is running 90 secs ahead. So 45 sec per year, that is about average accuracy that I have in most quartz wristwatch pieces of this price range.

... Just thought to mention that.
