Our op still never stated how old these speakers are. .

    My CF-3's are serial #'s   241599265   &   241599266, I assume they are the 241 week of 1995, correct? Making them version 3?

  2. Hi everyone, been reading this post ...... very interesting, brings to mind some questions.

I currently have CF-3's that I have owned since I bought them new. I have been looking at the 'little brother' to the TORII MK4, the TORII JR, from what I read on the Decware site very similar

"The JR is using the same proven if not legendary circuit used in the TORII MK4 but stripped of all non-essential features" (from the Decware site).

Could I face the same potential issues with the CF's?

Thanks for the responses. I think I will order the Forte IIIs. I have a 60 day return window, so if they have the harsh midrange, I will send them back.

Apparently, Klipsch is not using autoformers in the newer speakers. The KG 4.5s I used were from the mid '90s, and a much lower line than the Forte, so hopefully I'll be good.

I was not aware that Klipsch used autoformers, are they the same as the Paul Speltz products?

Given the age of my speakers is a crossover upgrade/rebuild necessary?

  3. I have CF-3 version 3's in walnut that I bought new. I let my daughter use them for a while and now have them back. Have not personally heard version 1's, the opinion I have heard  on this forum is the 1's are better but by how much I don't know. I do know that they were a variation from the typical Klipsch design at that time.

you can run your CF3 on a set amp if you want you may even be happy everyone is different in their expectations but the Klipsch rating is much under stated so far as efficiency goes.

    Moray,

Interesting, I have asked a few people about the CF's efficiency and most said they felt it was slightly overrated for instance CF-3 more like 95 as opposed to 100 as stated.

The other lines such as Heritage I believe may be as you say, but this is just what I have read.

    WVU80,

Have  listen  to a tube amp, some people prefer the sound......I do, but everyone has different taste

  5. I am guessing I am border line for using a SET, if I find a inexpensive used piece I will try it or if there is dealer by(which I don't know of) that I can demo one otherwise I will most likely demo a Prima Luna integrated (I know there is a dealer by me) . The Prima Luna is interesting as you can switch between ultra-linear and triode mode, it is also auto bias

  6. I have CF-3's, according to Klipsch they are stated as being "sensitivity  100db SPL  @ 1 Watt/Meter". I read somewhere this may be a little overstated actually being a bit lower.

The reason I ask is I looking for a new amp and if it is actually lower it would most likely rule SET.

    Thanks Bob

  7. Anyone have experience with Prima Luna? I am thinking about one of their integrated 's fro my CF-3's, the adaptive auto bias seems like a positive feature.

I am also considering a true SET say 45,2a3,300b. I know the power difference is huge, would the SET work with the CF-3?

    Thanks Bob

Same here. Which place are you looking at? The only speaker salons I know of are Hi-Fi Sound and Stereoland

I now live in Moose Lake, I lived in Minneapolis until 2002. In addition to HI-Fi Sound and Stereoland, are Audio Perfection, The Needle Doctor(Jerry Raskins), Halsten Entertainment.

There is also Audio by Van Alstine, who manufactures his own and sells direct (he will audition equip).

I have bought equip from Hi-Fi sound and Audio Perfection. I believe Halsten is geared more to home theater. Van Alstine has interesting gear, here is a link https://avahifi.com/

  9. I also think the Epics can be demanding on amps, as their impedance has been shown to dip below 3 ohms.

I do not think tube amps would like impedance dipping to 3 ohms.

I am leaning towards the Rogue Sphinx because there is dealer near and I think I could bring the rogue home to demo, also it's only about $1300( I am in Minnesota, even in Minneapolis there are only a few high end shops)

But I am intrigued by SET

The only insight I can give is my personal experience over the last 20 years with my CF-4’s. I’ve paired them with several receivers, 2 different Denon’s, 2 different Integra’s, a Pioneer, and I’m forgetting one. Right now it’s being pushed by a Bryston 8B-ST bridged for 400 Watts at 8 ohms. They’ve always sounded good with the other receivers but now that I’m running  the Integra DTR-60.6 as a pre-pro with the Bryston I’ve never heard them sound so good. Depth and soundstage are incredible. Theres just more depth now and with a good recording the singer is front and center and sounds like they’re in the room with me, but slightly elevated like they’re on a stage higher than my seat. This is exactly what I’ve aleays wanted them to sound like. I knew they could sound this good but definitely the right gear makes them sing over other stuff. I’d love to hear them on tube gear to find out how they sound. The closest I am to that is the Budgie tube preamp I’m using for my turntable which I love. So my opinion after having mine for so long and trial and error with different gear is that it’s truly trial and error. Try it and see how they sound. If they don’t match well, sell and try another. Each type of gear will bring about different pros and cons to the sound. I’d bet though that tube gear will sound great with any epic.

What you said reminds me of what someone once said that the CF"s like lots of power. I hear what you are saying about try different gear but that can cost alot of money unless you find inexpensive gear used.

I used mine with a Yamaha AX-570 and a George Wright main amp that was a 6550 push pull amp, I noticed the bass was tighter on the yamaha but the mids better with tube

  11. Hi,

     Please excuse me for changing the topic, I would appreciate input.  I would like to buy another amp (integrated) for my CF-3's (version 3 I believe), I have a couple of questions;

I see according to Klipsch brochure they are rated for 100 db SPL sensitivity, I think I remember reading on a forum somewhere that this may too high and it may actually be in the mid 90's?

I know they are nominally rated at 8 ohms impedance, but a told the impedance  curve is not very flat and that in general tube amps prefer a more flat curve?

I am considering a Rogue Sphinx integrated which is a hybrid or a fully tube integrated like maybe a Decware low power. Some have told me I may be fine with under 10 watts per channel.

I  listen to classical and especially like large orchestral, my concern with the low power tube would be having enough power for this.

At one point I tried the CF-3's with a older Yamaha AX-570(100wpc) and a Geroge Wright tube pre-amp, it sounded good but pre amp had too much gain for the main amp, plus the yamaha is older. This is why I am considering the Rogue.

Another question is do solid state amps in general have better damping factors than tube? In my mind this relates to woofer control which the CF-3"s have 2 - 10" woofers.

I am interested in the Decware or similar but want to make sure I have enough power

    Thanks Bob

  12.

There are so many bad amplifiers and even more painfully ordinary amps out there it complicates matters when it comes to trying to make recommendations. It is pretty easy to tell when you hear a special amp though. Don't expect AVR's to sound much better than ordinary though it's not what they are about. The same holds for most receivers.

This is the reason I went with 3 separate amps, this way, I can control what I want when I want. I toyed with getting a Scotts, until I heard what a SET can do, what a SEP can do, and what a PP Integrated can do. And none of my amps ran more than $500.00.

I know there's much much better out there, but for where I'm at in the game, they keep me happy. If you can find a cheap Chinese Class A SET, you can get them wired already in triode mode and pushing 4 WPC. It will give you that nice 3D imaging, then all you need to do is "upgrade" the caps and resistors if anything. I had my SET upgraded for less than $175.00.

I know you are going the other way due to your room size, but if you wanted something for critical listening, here's an idea.

Try looking at one that puts out slightly more power and only has one input.

    Jim,

Your comment about one input is what I may try to, I have have one source my CDP and do not plan on any others. The other interest would be integrated for simplicicty

  13. Thanks Matt, from what I have been  able to find these speakers are most likely not very linear. Given our chat here your Genesis would most likely be a bit small, what is the power output of your other unit again?

I appreciate all of your help, I just want to make a good choice.

    Thanks Bob

  14. Klipsch states 100 db SPL, I have hear some suggest it may actually be as low as 94.  Please define EDM

To clarify when we talk about amp power are we talking 9 watts per channel or 9 watts both channels combined. My readings were done with a Yamaha AX570 100WPC, the volume control was a bit above 9 o'clock
