  1. I'm interested.  I know little about them, don't have a large budget.

My couch which is my MLP, is one without a lot of wood, there is a metal frame, modular top pieces hook on.

Seats themselves are suspended over a metal frame, a bit of wood in a few places.

Seats have wiring going through them like a mattress coil style without visible coils, wire frame for seat I guess.

Could I attach one to each metal frame wiring directly under the seat?

Are they worthwhile, do you like them, Aura's OK, need something better, etc?

Any experience with these is helpful.  Honestly I don't want to spend much more than a few hundred, 300 tops on this to start at least.  Preferably a few hundred to test it out.

Please share if you have an interest!

  2. Rented and watched Hateful 8 Blu-Ray.

First I am a huge Q fan, I must admit a strong bias towards him on most things.

With that said, its becoming clear to me that although he still has great ideas, the filter needed for him to make the best possible movies no longer exists, and I'm guessing nobody is able to tell him much of anything he doesn't want to hear.

Example:  Inglorious Basterds, a very well made film, extremely exciting, yet how many times can you watch it?  It's good once or twice, has little to ooh and aah at multiple times.

Example #2:  Django.  Beautiful movie, almost flawless, except that he insisted he needed a redemption ending where somehow there's an alternate ending to what was already a great film and didn't need some ridiculous fantasy ending.  Kill the 3rd act, it's perfect.

Example #3:  Hateful 8.  OMG.  Dude, you are way full of yourself.  Fantastic dialog, very compelling for the first hour.  Then they get somewhere, there's some interesting characters.  But then you can begin to see the wheels come off when he narrates over it and tries to get you very excited about what you missed.

Then there's the third act, which goes on way too long, even though there are some really cool compelling moments, especially any related to Samuel Jackson.

It almost felt like Jackson was given a redemption role to counter his Django character...you had to play the I hate black people character, now we'll give you a redeeming "I had white people!" character to you are judged as a self-hater (which I would never think, but I think does exist out there).

The last speech even, my friend watching with me and I both screamed at the screen "ENOUGH ALREADY!"

It just didn't go anywhere that exciting...yet it was somewhat compelling.

Simple bottom line of Hateful 8 -- An hour too long.   No filter on Q = rambling monstrosity instead of tight, cool story.  He is too full of himself at this point and I hope at some point, he realizes it and takes some editing direction from others.

  3.

Take a finger off,   there's the noise even more pronounced out of one hole.

a 1" diameter leak overall still allowed cone movement as if it was sealed, at least to me.

The interesting thing about a passive radiator design is that you're going to get backpressure from the radiator as if it were a port, making internal air pressure very high, much higher than a simple sealed box. Maybe this was shoving more air out of those holes than would be expected. I dunno.

I don't argue in the least anything as I don't know enough, but it's hard for me to grasp that a passive radiator is considered a ported design, when the radiator as you describe is preventing any air from escaping.  Basically the experiment I conducted (unknowingly) demonstrated for me how critical sub design and sealing is, any small leak through the cabinet can kill the sound out of your sub.

I can understand that a passive radiator has flex and is not as solid as the cabinet itself, but can't quite grasp how a passive radiator is like a port (unless I am mistaken on this).

  4. Instead of starting a thread to ask this question about subs, I'll ask it here since it's relevant to what we discussed.

I do understand, I think, that the gain on the sub is to be set to a certain level that matches the spl of the other speakers in the particular room.

After calibrating, if I wanted more bass sound, I should increase it in the AVR, no on the sub itself.  Typically the way it's setup is actually fine for me.

But I still am having difficulty understanding the sub gain/volume vs the AVR.

When I turn it up in the AVR, it goes louder and louder along with the other speakers.

If I happened to turn the gain up a bit on the sub, what would be different exactly besides not matching the other speakers?

To test the max volume of a sub (which I have no need or intention of doing), would you then increase the gain on the sub to the max, and then max it in the avr?

How does the efficiency of a speaker determine the sub gain level, if it does?

Thanks again in advance.  The RSW15 is incredible and seems to be yawning at anything I throw at it, but I'm kind of wimpy as far as really turning it up so far.

  5.

Another tell tale sign of a leaking cabinet is pressing lightly on the driver and seeing that the passive doesn't move.

Unless the cabinet leak is the size of a crater the passive is still going to move, this serves no purpose.

That makes sense to me and certainly played out that way in practice...a 1" diameter leak overall still allowed cone movement as if it was sealed, at least to me.

  6. Ah ha!   :excl:

So I ran Audssey at the MLP with the sub all the way in the corner, upside down.

How can I cover these holes????? So I used the rectangular feet given to me with the sub (big hard rubber rectangles, put two over one side of the holes, held them down with my elbows, then covered the other 2 with my fingers.

    WORKED LIKE A CHARM!

Take a finger off,   there's the noise even more pronounced out of one hole...take two off, it's there, put them back, none.

I stood up the rectangles on top of each hole, and they actually seem to cover them well and no sound.  So I will use a bit until the feet come, then I'll get in touch with you Jason and see if you can guide me to a cheaper set that will do the job right.

Can't thank the gang here enough!  I just listened a bit to it in the corner, loud, OMG this thing rocks!  I cannot wait to use it without the "fear"  :D

CEC you are on the money, MLO it's unbelievable.  Because it's on the underside of the sub, it would have been impossible to find without flipping it over.  Close to the box, you would think it is a mechanical sound.  With one hole open and the rest closed, the best I can describe it is if you tried making a fart sound out of one side of your mouth...that is the sound lol!  I can try and record it if anybody is interested to hear it.

    OMG what a relief  :emotion-22:

  7. Derrick thank you for the vote pointing in Jason's direction.  Every time I see your posts I am mesmerized by Gollum...and then the subwoofer signature jeezus is (6) real?  LOL

...gary thank you for sharing about your own, it's helpful to know what it should sound like.  I did hear test tones at 20, but will wait to see if that was real or distortion, assuming this thing begins working properly

Jason, I like your passion and especially the irritation you get when someone does something not the best way, lol!  I ordered the feet because they come with several screw sizes and Amazon will deliver free today (about a 12 hour window from ordering time).  If they work and it solves the problem, I think I can return them and go get them at Depot or the like once i know what I need.  Even if I can't, this is a beautiful sub and I'm OK giving it way too nice feet :)

As for your advice, it's great, as always.  Just by suggesting I turn it over and try it, I didn't even have to try it (yet), I saw the holes and immediately thought that is the issue.  4  1/4" holes (approx) would equal a 1" port!    Scott, who sold me the sub, was really cool and gave me a call to discuss this morning.  I can't say enough good things about Scott and his way of dealing with things.

What I did was VERY GENTLY <touched> the driver cone, and yes you can see the passive radiator move.   BUT, the real issue I think is, when I do it, you can feel the air coming out the holes, big time.  I could probably have spent hours/days/weeks/years thinking this sub just is what it is, but if this fixes the problem BOOM I'm a happy camper :)  If not...the adventure continues.

MPS the sound is loud enough when placed in a corner that it's a distraction...and as a newbie to this higher end equipment I don't have enough experience to know what I am hearing for sure.  One of you guys would likely have heard it and right away said dude there's a leak what's up?  I sure hope the foot holes are the issue, I am amazed that nobody has ever had this experience...but then again, how often do you take the spikes or feet off a sub?   I believe the output of the sub is such that at around 20hz, it doesn't have much.  If it is/were bottoming, I suppose it should get worse the lower the tone...and it shouldn't really be able to play a nice 25hz anywhere in the room without it (I would think?) if it were actually bottoming...but again I don't know.

I'm going to do a quick setup and see if I can repeat the noise, with the sub upside down (hat tip jason) so that the holes are up and I can hear it more directly (and feel it).

  8. Jason i ordered the svs isolation ones that are soft...its on carpet but i was using rubber rectangles supplied with it...but i doubt they were covering the holes on most setups i did. I can test later today without the feet to see if that was it. Condition is so nice i doubt its leaking elsewhere but am not aure. Do you think the footholes could cause the whir?

  9. Its dark but i can tell it does. I blew a little air through one and could feel it pressurize when covering 2 others. I cant believe that is it ! but i ordered a set of feet on amazon that arrive today. I checked the tightness of all screws no obvious leaks besides the foot peg holes.

  10. If you are sure it is the subwoofer and not something else around it rattling, first thing i would check for is a leak.

Get yourself a small 3/16-1/4" or so vacuum line or hose from the hardware store and run a 20 Hz signal through the sub.

With one side of the line near but not in your ear go around the driver. passive, amp, seams while your test tone is playing.

If there is a leak it will sound like a chuffing noise, repair your leak if there happens to be one.

    This should fix it.

    if no leak is found

Put the subwoofer on a towel or something upside down and run the same music and volume you heard the noise with before.

See if the noise is still there.

Could be a bad cable as well, hard to diagnose this kind of stuff online without really hearing it.

The four feet are not on the bottom of the sub...the holes that are there go into the enclosure and affect the pressure.

I can test it tomorow, but that could be the issue.  I don't have the feet but I'm sure it's an easy item to get.

  11. I've spent a lot of time setting up my recently acquired RSW15 :emotion-19:  .  I did the subwoofer crawl, I have tried setting it up in a dozen different places.  I could be wrong, but it seems very touchy   as far as setup and getting the low end bass to sound right, at least as a single sub.

For instance, in the corner, after running Audyssey XT, it gets a very even response, but at even a decent volume, a low-end frequency test creates a "whirring" sound around 25hz (+-5hz).  I have no idea if this is the sub starting to bottom out (my guess) or if it's some kind of port-type noise, even  though it's a passive radiator design and not really a port.  My guess is it's a soft version of just starting to bottom out.

I run a test tone from 100hz down to 10hz in 5hz steps (from youtube).  In the current position, it sounds really good, and makes no whirring sounds.  The tones are clear, there is a null at 70-75, but otherwise it sounds very good.  The audible volume (not measured) seems to peak around 40hz, then plays very strong down to 30hz, then drops a lot to 25hz, then there's just a whisper around 20hz.  I can run the THX subwoofer test (youtube) at a pretty loud volume and it also sounds great.

If I run that same test in the corner, at a high volume, I may even get that sound at 30hz, very audible at 25hz, then a bit at 20hz, then it fades out.  At the same time, the output sounds much stronger at the lowest end.  At other locations (I ran about a dozen), it varies from no whirring with thin sound to everything else up to the corner spot.

So at least assuming things are setup right (*** u....me....), I've got great sound now throughout the entire range, but a lot less audible low end than I was expecting.I can turn it way up with no whirring sounds, yet there is still a decent/audible tone even down to 20hz.

What the heck is that whirring noise?  Best I can describe is WHHIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrzzzz z z z z  s s  as it descends down the range.  It never has "knocked" but it does get louder if I turn it up.

I'd appreciate anybody's help or expertise.  I know many of you have had this sub and I'm more than willing to believe I'm doing something wrong with the setup or measurements.

    Thank you in advance.  RK

  12. It was such a visual feast, I actually watched it 3 times before I picked up on their weird religion.  I realize it's fantasy but that backstory is just as interesting to me as anything else.

Also look up the supposed backstory on the guitar player.  Let's just say that the mask he wears is actually mommy dearest.  Lots of freaky stuff like this embedded in this movie.

On first watch, I got a bit winded watching the endless road scene, especially stopping, talking and then turning around and going back.  But sometimes with a movie like this it's just too much to absorb the first time.

The level of detail that Miller put into the "world" was incredible, and the photography was amazing, hard to reconcile that this movie was out at a similar time as The Martian and yet seem to take place in the same landscape.  There was some real love that went into designing the world and its characters, the cars, the cult, and everything else.  The movie "slows down" after the first watch and allows for a lot more detail.

At a higher level, the movie is an incredible HT experience...and yet does so without one bit of spacey/sci-fi type cgi-type effects.

But at the core the conflict that I can see a lot of people having is the characterization.

Mel Gibson was awesome as the original Max.  You cannot look back and not realize that he made the series.  Even though the original was fun, The Road Warrior is who most people associate with Gibson and that was the highlight of the original 3.  The ending of that movie especially (which I won't specify, no spoilers) is the highlight of the original trilogy.

The series itself fell down at the end with the kids, the airplane and who knows WTF they were thinking and where they were going after Thunderdome.  It's unwatchable after that point, a true failure and big mistake.  As risky as Tina Turner was in the dome (and a success), the rest of the story went nowhere and was awful, imo.

That leads us back here to Fury Road.  The way the movie begins is better than all the others, imo, all the way through the hanging hook to round out the opening act.  Immortan Joe is by far the most interesting character, and imo, Theron while she did a good job, by no means was the star of this movie.

The odd chameleon-like ability of Tom Hardy to disappear into any role he chooses to play is uncanny....almost hypnotic.  He's the star of the movie and yet for most of the movie, you don't see him as much as feel him.  The visceral effects in this movie, the sound, the red-filter color and the post-apocalyptic stress-paranoia that runs through everyone and everything is just THERE.  You are basically scared and uncomfortable for a lot of this movie.

Things like the flaming Satriani, chroming, and incredible contrast of the hideous world vs 5 stunning beauties leaves you unsettled and unsure of anything.   Hardy brings you along on this ride, until the very end when he says his name.  And that moment you realize the movie has just begun...

The movie is a masterpiece, one that cannot be understood or appreciated without multiple viewings.  If you didn't like it much the first time, I don't recommend watching it again.  It's flawed, it's a bit long, could probably be almost prefect with 15 minutes removed and a bit more backstory added.  But the purpose I think was to not tell who Max was, but instead to show what he had become and was struggling with.  With a sequel, it will probably become even better.  But as a single movie, that is a flaw to leave so much unknown.  I give the movie 3.5 stars.

    RK

  13. It seems clear from my limited experience 2 is better than 1 and ive never sold a speaker or sub ever. Clearly there are issues more easily resolved or unresolvable without a 2nd sub. In an ideal world every speaker would be perfect full range no need for subs but that world doesnt exist here. So we make due and find solutions to our general issue of sub location and clarity and then for each individual room. Nobody is against anybody we all search for solutions and have some verbal combat along the way. All good fun, no?

  14. At half price the 28Fs are a great deal imo.  I own them in one theater and they sound terrific imo.  So at half price yes.  If not, get the RP series by contacting at least 2 dealers and asking for their best price.  Or, if you are open to the idea, consider used and get the Reference series from days past such as the RF82s, RF62s, RF52s and filling in from there.  New is always nice.  So is saving $$ with a used one.  It's really a matter of preference.

  15. You spent so much time on this and yet the sound is not what you expected. The first thing that comes to my mind is this -- you should be able to use a garbage receiver and still get decent sound, no?

2 thoughts for consideration (not an expert, just a idea guy)...Youthman has a really detailed thread about using LaScalas and other speakers and having difficulty with Audyssey setting proper levels because of the efficieny of the LaScalas.  Is it possible that even though you are getting correction, you are bottoming out on the fronts at -12 and need more attentuation before setting levels properly?

    2)  The room itself.  It sounds to me like there's a possibility that how you built the room combined with the speakers chosen is not working well with the treatments.   Just another thought.
