  1. My older brother is getting the new Onkyo SR700 and is going to start with RF3 or RB5 fronts RC3 center and RB3 for rears. He isn't sure whether to get the RB5's or RF3's for the fronts. Sonically what are your observations? There are some differences in the woofers but I don't know how much and I think they crossover at different points (couldn't find crossover spec on this site for the RB5, only RF3). I personally prefer the great wood finishes in maple and cherry over the black vinyl of the RF3's. My brother will be using HSU VTF-2 for sub.It also appears the RC3 only comes in black vinyl, correct? Anyone who's demoed both please respond and give your opinion. Also, anyone had any dealings with reliableaudiovideo.com? That is who he's dealing with and they have about the cheapest prices overall. Thanks, Gary.
  2. How much do Al's xovers cost ordered from him for replacement of my AA xovers in LaScalas? I really don't know if I'd take on the job of building them. Thanks, Gary.
  3. Thanks for the feedback! I did my first set of 12 ga wires with crimping with a friends ratcheting crimpers. This worked very well. I'm not sure when I start using 10 ga connectors and the Canare or Clark cable if these crimpers will fit around the connectors. Anyone here that can recommend a pr of crimpers that I could look at online? If you have a part # it would help in my search. I looked through Partsexpress but didn't find exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks, Gary.
  4. I am going to build my own speaker wires and had a couple of questions. I'm going to use either Canare Star Quad wire or Clark Wire & Cable wire. Both have 4 jacketed wires twisted inside an outside jacket. I will 2 wires to + terminal and 2 wires to the neg terminal for wires (not bi-wired). I was going to use either Monster Cable terminals or some from Partsexpress.com (already got some terminals for my 2 ch system wires and is a good company). I'll be building these for my front soundstage for my home theater so it will be 3 wires+terminals. Should I crimp the terminals or solder them? If I solder them should I use silver solder or will a general 60/40 solder do? The terminals will be 24k gold plated of course. Thanks for you help. Regards, Gary.
  5. Horn Ed, where would I be able to find the "Pomp and Pipes" cd for my own collection? Thanks, Gary
  6. I was wondering where a good source for gold plated connectors (bananas, spades and pins etc) would be on the web? Any help would be appreciated. Also, does anyone have a good source for Canare brand wire that has 4 strands at 11awg with the grey sheath (sorry forgot the wire model they label it by) for making your own speak wires? Thanks Gary.
  7. I've been missing the 2 ch posts also. I'll take the time to thank you guys here for sparking my interest in tubes. I'd been interested in getting a 2 ch system up. Wanted to do something more than my 1980 Heresys and 20 yr old Sony 50w/ch VFET amp/preamp I have stored away. Finally after searching area newspaper classifieds for weeks, I found some LaScala's. Vintage 1980 w/AA xovers. VERY good condition and one owner. The guy is about 60 yrs old and retiring to a smaller lake home and didn't have room. Got em for $650. Great deal on lacquer finished birch w/grills. These sound great and got to reading all the flap about tubes here and started looking. I found a Scott 299C amp and 350B tuner from a guy who's father had bought them new in '63. The guy's Dad passed away 6 months ago and he got them. Seems he was a bit skittish of the tube gear and decided to UPGRADE??? to a SS Marantz 1050 from mid 70's. I bought them for a very reasonable price and had him send them directly to a guy many of you surely already know (Ryan Inman) for restoration. He's very respected on the HH Scott forum and has been awesome to work with online, Really honest and informative, as well as, a great deal on quality workmanship. I will be receiving my new additions soon and will post an update on how they sound. I'll be taking my 25 yr old Luxman turntable with vintage AudioTechnica Signet cartridge back out of retirement. Thanks again for your interesting posts here. I think I'm hooked and I don't even have the Scotties yet. P.S. Ryan Inman's email for anyone needing restoration on H.H. Scott products from late 40's to mid 60's vintage is ryancinman@aol.com Thanks, Gary
  8. I have a friend who is interested in a Marantz 1050 30w/ch amp from mid 70's and is also looking at a Carver from mid 80's I think. What kind of input does anyone have when the choice would be one of these two? I'm not sure of the model # of the Carver. Was Carver giving good value as far as build quality and sonic performance as the Marantz? My friend will be visiting this board and I'll direct him to read your responses. He also was interested in what currently available bookshelf speaks he could match with his amp choice. I recomended the RB-5 since it has the efficiency he's looking for with lower wattage amps. Thanks, Gary.
  9. I just purchased a Scott 299B tube amp to refurbish to go with my recently purchased LaScala's. I was wondering if my old solid state Yamaha tuner (approx 20 yrs old) would be fine or is it better to have a tube tuner? It does'nt seem like it would make much difference but I thought I could get some input. I also noticed some folks use a sub with these amps and I'd like to have that option but don't know how you would hook up such a system. Thanks, Gary.
  10. Klipschguy, that would probably be right as I was thinking that AA x-overs were not used in Scalas much later than around 1980 according to other posts I've read. Thanks Gary. This message has been edited by GaryA on 03-11-2002 at 08:26 PM
  11. Thanks for all the replys folks. My LaScala's have the AA crossovers. The nice fellow I purchased them from yesterday said he bought them new in 1986. Serial# 25U552&25U553, I've been trying the link to check mfg date without any luck. Does nyone know when these were made? Also, I'm interested in making my own x-overs like Al's but not sure if I'm adept enough to do it. How hard is this and where would you get parts to do it? Al, approx what's the investment on a pair of your x-overs for the Scala? Thanks again for the feedback, Gary.
  12. What do ALK crossovers run for La Scala's shipped? Do they make a huge difference? I have a pair of Scala's from 1984 and am thinking about the upgrade. Your input is appreciated. Thanks.
  13. Lew, I still have a pair of NEW UNUSED white ksf-s5's. I rememberyou were interested in black ones but the white is actually very elegant looking and really disapear on the walls compared to black(great WAF too if that's a factor). Need $260.00+ups ground shipping (around $15). Good luck on your search, Gary.
  14. Boa, the 4802 Denon is high on the list of possibles w/adjust x-over of 40,60,80,100&120htz to choose from. I'm also contemplating the Pioneer VSX37 w/x-overs of 80,100,and maybe 120htz selections for sub. It is going for 800-1000$ w/7ch capability and only 5 channel power. The new VSX47 has 7 channel power and crosses over down to 50htz. It's about 1800-2000$ right now. I still need input on if Klipsch towers KLF or RF7 sound good letting the sub worh belw 80htz or better if the klipsch doit down to say 40,50 or60htz. Thanks, Gary
  15. I have KLF20 mains and KLFC7 center. I see many receivers with adjustable x-over settings from 40-120htz or more. Most are in the 80-100htz for the lowest x-over. I really want to make use of the klf's potetial down low in the freq range. I have an SVS 20-39CS+ and Samson S1000 on order. My question is, do I need to x-over at 40-60htz or will a receiver crossing over at 80htz sound fine? Does anyone prefer playing their Klipsh speaks down low vs letting the sub do it for HT and music? I haven't bought my upgraded recvr yet and most don't have adjustable xover below 80htz for receivers in the 750-1200$ range. I will spend up to 1500-1800$ if need be to get what I want. Am I making too much of this issue? I know many say on this forum and others that letting the SVS sub do the work below 80htz sounds better than the Klipsch/other speaks do down low. Thanks for your input.
