This route is actually playing full Tidal MQA?...

I do not believe so. The Samsung Phone does not have an inbuilt MQA decoder but the sound is amazing none the less. Completely took me by surprise.

Then.... I connected my Samsung phone to my DAC, USB -C adaptor to USB female, then on to my Primaluna EVO 400. Gosh! That sounds fab! MQA fully unfolded via my Topping D90 MQA. Only started out as an experiment but I may use this method from now on.

From what I've read, while Apple and Android phones can open Tidal's MQA files, you still need another device that unpacks it for the true MQA file to be played.

Oh.. OK. I'll try to run the phone through my DAC and see what happens.

Otherwise, as it is... sounds awesome directly from phone to amp. So much more detail, clarity and thump.. Can't believe what I'm hearing really..

  3. Hi Fido,

What a fascinating (and envious) lifestyle you've led!

Mine only comes close by way of working for Sir Ralph Halpern who owned a chain of stores in the UK called Top Shop & Top Man.... I worked for him whenever there was a Miss World Competition as they sponsored it way back then.... Used to meet each of the winners for six years, chatting and drinking with them, then taking official photos for promotional material and then the Public store appearances which were also taken by myself. That was a most enjoyable period for me!

  4. Yes. I understand the issue Darkscience. Perhaps you could either: remove and replace the attached plinth with a taller version as these are only screwed on to the underside of the cabinet or place them on inert blocks of the same square area as the speaker base?

  5. Hi Pezcore67,

I came over from a Pioneer SX-1980 Receiver to a Primaluna EVO 400 Integrated Tube Amp.

Also playing through my Klipsch Forte III's sounding brilliant.

No regrets on my decision to change to Tubes. Absolutely fantastic!

Now about to 'Tube Roll' to explore more sound avenues.

  6. I think I'm going to get myself a set of KT150's.. 💷💷 😱

Sounds like it's the way to go... I think Fido's sound searching is very much like mine.

Has the same Brimar's as myself so I can't wait to hear what each these have to offer.

  7. My Forte III's are in corners set out at 8 inches from the back wall. It's ideal.

I've no toe in and they are firing straight on. The listening position is 11 feet away and they've created a listening bubble that I can sit in and enjoy. Fabulous speakers!!

  8. Hi FSHNRIG,

Sorry to hear that the Brimar's were a bit too bright for you. Maybe more hours on the Tubes may 'bed in' and lose some of those highs you are hearing? I'm finding mine are settling down and are sounding more integrated and smoother. You may be quite correct in the Brimar's favouring Forte speakers but I also believe that a DAC and cable have a small contribution to it. I've listened to quite a few DAC's in my current system and found a lot of different sounds from different DAC's. I'm also connecting with a Lush 2 USB cable which allows me to 'play' with the sound if required. This Lush 2 has been left on my favourite Pin settings since I've had it which pushes out the best in my system. The Tube rolling will alter the remaining Tone/Pitch/Bass presentation. I concur that Mullards may serve you better as they are said to be a warmer sounding Tube than the Military CV4003 Brimars. May I also recommend to you the Brimar 13D5 considered by many the 'best of all' 12au7 tubes? I bought these at the same time as the CV4003's but didn't use them as they were too warm in the gain position and moved them to the pre position instead. I believe if I used the Mullards in my current set up I'm pretty sure I'd be saying they are too warm, but I have to test this to confirm so I'll invest in a pair of Mullards shortly. I'm loving this Tube rolling ability and look forward to experimenting more. Wishing you many Happy listening hours in our unfortunate times of Covid and Lockdown. Stay safe.

Were the NOS 4003 gain tubes hard to find and expensive?

    My EVO400 loves Carlton's ES-335 too!  Thanks.

    Hi FSHNRIG,

The Brimar NOS 4003's were no problem to find. Good price as well at £30.00 each. I am happy to PM you the details if you like. I was bouncing around the other forums and saw a recommendation of Brimar 13D5 Long Plate so I've just placed an order for two more Brimar 4003's and two Brimar 13D5's.

Therefore, I'll run four NOS Brimar 4003's as Drivers and two NOS 13D5's as Gains.

    Can't wait!
