  1. ditto for what was said above - the condensed version is:

Center channel speakers are generally spaced constrained for most folk's homes and for the mass market the smaller boxes need to have help in extending the bass response to create a better match for the voicing that is to appear to be coming from the screen. The position of ports (if for all other intents and purposes the box is well designed) is of no consequence on the speaker perfrormance unless there is an obstruction (wall) near the face of the port. Otherwise, many speakers (regardless of size) are ported as a tuning exercise to produce reliable and specific responses.

  2. Well shoot folks - while the Astros may well have the best overall pitching in the league at the moment, I want the Cards to pull this out. My heart has been with them since as a child I listened to the Cards on KMOX with Harry Carey - in deep southern Arkansas. My father taught me how to play poker over the years as we listened to the old motorola tube AM radio (as an aside I still have that radio - broke it apart several months ago as I had acquired a block of tubes at an estate auction - it now works again...). Go Cards - we are looking for the miracle...

Yo Tom - I too would like to see a mixem up with Chicago - It would be fun if we could move our dominance to the city and not just the Cubbies[:P]

Regardless, still the greatest game on the planet....

  3. Yo Doc - you are more right than I on the modeling. My point would be better stated as to say I could model to the same tuning point with a couple of ports. In my case as well as the other stated cases, the volume of air moved could be managed by port size and one could be sure to have adequate design to prevent any unwanted 'extra' sounds.

The variances folks talk about in the percieved sound, in my experience, based on the shape of a port is easily designed around for rectangle, square or oval.

2 cents - I have built multiple ways and when done properly the speaker boxes test out accurate within my acceptable variances - depending on the box it could be +or- up to 3% of the design for a woofer and I have not noted any relevant trend regarding either the number of ports or port shape. I screw up the crossovers much more often than the box...[:D]

  4. as long as the cross-sectional area remains the same, the length will also remain the same. You can also divide the single large port into any number of smaller ports as long as the area stays the same, but it is to your high SPL advantage to use just a single one.

If you are going to be redesigning the cornwall, then I might suggest going with a new alignment to get rid of a wide peak centered around 80Hz.

As to the high SPL advantage Doc - I think that you could model several variations that may include multiple ports that would not have a noticable (if any) effect on SPL. The overall port volume is still the primary issue and there are multiple options as long as you design away from situations where the port doesn't 'whoosh' (how's that for a technical term?), however, there is a general limit based on the speaker specs regarding the number of ports that would not lower SPL..

I wholeheartedly agree with the new alignment especially if you can take your own measurements on the woofer. That done accurately allows tremendous flexibility for design - quite often folks can do pretty good with the new design for a limited set of speaker boxes while the costs to manufacture such a change could be prohibitive.

  5. The Pioneer Elite 59avi should be in your price range now and I can only say really nice things about mine. You would have to have a coversion cable for the hdmi, but otherwise I would think you would be very satisfied. I bought in side by side with Denon regarding DVD and have grown to really like the SACD and DVD-A.

Regardless, Denon and Pioneer wre very close and you will probably like either one.

  6. Thanks guys I kinda figured I'd get it wrong but it's nice to know I was in the neighborhood.

How about my question about properly aligning the plug though? Any advice?

Bump - This is a question I wish I had asked.

I had assumed that in various forms the power is being conditioned before it hits the real meat of the matter (the transformer) and that most caution was taken to defeat any sort of polarity issue that may arise from a two prong plug. Much like our Mommies - they were doing it for our own good.

Regardless of my uninformed thoughts - there would still be a correct polarity solution for the plug if I read it right.

Help please - 7 of me have a headache over this issue....

  7. Really, it is quite simple. If the crossovers are more than 20 years old, I can just pretty much pronounce them all bad with just a sniff. On the ones newer than 20 years old, I still have to use test equipment.

By the way, the best ones smell like Arkansas cedar.

    Bob Crites

Most of us from Arkansas are very familiar with the technique. As a matter of fact I made beer money when I was a kid by training English Setters to detect the aroma of old caps. The hard part was to teach them to get on point to the specific cap. I was able to get them to back pretty good so folks like Crites could see a bad cap from a distance.

Those who have trouble following the above clearly spent too much time growing up in a city......

  8. Could very well be the classic ground loop problem. You will have to detach each input in a disciplined 'one at a time' way to find the culprit. Start with the cable TV attachment - by far the most common culprit.

If it is a ground loop there are a multitude of solutions from folks here - all are generally simple and work well...

  9. I have to agree on the 2446 and 2380a combo being a bit odd to the ear (seems to make your listening sweet spot smaller), however, the JBL 2446 is a darn fine driver that may need a different horn - Martinelli makes really pretty stuff that may work here. It should get low enough for a good Xover point.

The JBL 2404 is darn sweet and I will continue to recommend it.

I have built a pair of JBL speakers with 2404, 2426 w/2370a and 2521 in a ported bass bin (other than the 2404 I was a bit more vintage). I am quite pleased and would put it up against several of our favorites here.

  10. I spent quite a bit of time looking at players before choosing the Pioneer Elite 59avi. It was between it and the Denon 3910 - I found a seemingly better picture quality (so darn subjective) and I did have less problems on various DVDs (some of the animated stuff required some work to get to play on the 3910).

All said - I probably would have been alright with the 3910, but I am darn pleased as well with the 59avi. Audio seemed to be a push.

As an aside - listened to the SACD of DSOM last night and remain a huge fan of this mix. You can really get lost in sound.

  11. I have always had a preference for odd numbers on the volume control. I think it is a bit more philantropic than audiophilopic - I feel soo sorry for them haveing to spend their whole life with folks blatantly calling them odd. We humans can be so cruel sometimes....

  12. I got Dee's message. I apologize for not getting back to the thread. I had been visiting with Dee and Fini about getting together on the way down and found that my wife was asked to enter a group of photos in a show in North Carolina and we will be headed east whilst ya'll are relaxed and having a good time in Hope.

I was really excited and I know you will have a great gathering. Hoist a tankard (shot glass, mug, can, bottle - you chose) on my behalf...

Would the Shorthorn make a reasonable center speaker for two CW's or Khorns?.

Nope - not a good match at all.

In my mind you would only get this speaker for the historical perspective (or as a collector to fill out your Klipsch collection) or for the novelty. They are, to my ear, one of the poorer performers. They can be flat out pretty and my guess is that is why they were made.
