Yes you will need a DAC to convert the digital signal from the optical cable to an analog signal for the speakers. The Marantz has it built in and the Denon would need a separate unit between your computer and the amp.

Sorry, yes if there is an optical input and/or digital coax then there is a DAC in the amp. It will say it clearly as it is a selling feature. Some people want separates and some want the DAC in the amp. Up to you.

By digital input ,did you mean like mp3 or flac files playing from my pc?
And if the device has digital input like coax or optic,can we say the device has a DAC?
Depends on how you want to hook up your digital source. The amp has analog RCA inputs for the phono stage, a tuner, etc. It also has 2 optical inputs and 1 digital coax input. If you want to play digital music (say mp3s) you have to use a digital input which would use the DAC in the amp or a straight 3.5 mil to RCA cable which would use the analog RCA input and the DAC in say your iPod or iPad. I stream my digital music from my iPad through an Apple TV box with an optical cable. Also works with a line in cable.

You would have to buy a separate DAC if you go with the Denon which means more money, another cable and another box. If you want digital input of course.

I have a Marantz PM6006 driving a set of 93 sensitivity speakers and you can't turn it up past 12 o'clock on the dial. I think it will drive the 260s without any issues in a normal size home room. The DAC converts your digital signal (optical and coax in) to an analog signal. The Marantz has a decent one. I have never heard the Denon. Marantz is well built and looks good imo.

How are you cleaning your records?
I am using a Spin Clean record cleaner and it seems to do a decent job. One thing that I am concerned about is my water leaving minerals on the surface of the record. I am on well water with a potassium water softener. My water has some iron in it but it is mostly filtered out by the time it reaches the tap. The instructions say to used distilled water but I'm not sure if that is really necessary. Thoughts?

In my experience, the original source recording has the largest impact on the final sound regardless of the media type. There are good and bad in all media types. The one thing that I love about vinyl is the experience that goes along with the music. The sound quality aside, playing an album from start to finish, the way the artist intended (I am less likely to skip songs) makes you appreciate B-sides that you may have never listened to before. Plus you get the album artwork, liner notes, occasional posters, etc. If you want an incredible album on vinyl check out The White Stripes "Icky Thump". Fantastic engineering job.

Thanks for your thoughts on the subject. Something did change with the sound. It was obvious the first time I played a record. The room is mostly hard surfaces has some echo. I am going to work with the acoustics a bit to see if I can improve the overall sound a bit.

I have a Marantz PM6006 with 2 optical inputs and a digital coax input. The 6006 is the little brother to the 8005 and I have been happy with it. Seems to be built well. The DAC is good. The only thing that I don't like is the fact that they use a single remote for many different products so you have a large remote with only a handful of functions that actually work for the amp. If you add other Marantz components I can see how this would turn into a good thing.

I have been waiting for a pair of Chorus 2's to posted for sale in my area (within a reasonable drive) but there hasn't been any. My room is about 12 by 20 or so. I think the Quartets would be plenty for a room that size. Might get them if their condition is good.

Seller dropped the quartets to $500. Local too. Might check them out. Anyone know what the bass is like? Would use them in a mid sized room.

No. The speaker basket on one of them had some cracks in the mounting flange (plastic). The woofer was re-mounted to the box with larger screws and the cracks glued. Minor repair that I don't think would impact the sound to that degree. The only thing that I can think of in relation to the speaker is that there could be a small air leak around the woofer. Not sure if that would make any difference. The other speaker was not repaired or changed in anyway.

Hi,
Is this possible? I was getting some vibration through my TT stylus due to my hardwood floor vibrating at certain frequencies. While my speakers were out for repair (don't ask) I decided to go into the basement and glue the subfloor to the floor joists with construction adhesive. The floor doesn't creak anymore which is great but when I got my speakers back and played any kind of music I found the sound to be totally different. The bass is much tighter but muddy at times and it sounds as though the openness of the music is gone. It sounds more muted if that makes any sense. Everything sounds heavy to me.
Anyone else ever experience this?

I am watching the Quartets which I think are a decent deal if in good shape.
I am not in a rush so I'll see what comes available in my area. My area is Ottawa Canada so supply can be tight and it can be a very long drive to go and see items. There is a pair of Chorus 2's in Thunder Bay I would like to see but that would be a 32 hour round trip drive. Needless to say shipping is prohibitively expensive.

In my area I can pick up a set of Heresy's for $750, a pair of Quartet's for $550 or KG 4s for $400. They are all in good condition. The Quartet's have Crites crossovers and ti tweeters. For a 2 channel system in a medium sized room which do you think would be a better choice given the prices? The music played would mostly be 70's rock. Are these a decent deal or wait for something else?

I only listen to music on this system, no home theater and no sub. I haven't looked into the used options in my area (Ottawa, Canada) as I ususally buy new. I am a bit wary of buying used. You never know what you are really getting and how it has been treated. The chorus 2's look great and the forte 3's would be awesome. Any idea of the MSRP on those?
I took a quick look at the used options here and there seems to be a few pairs of KG2s and KG4s and a pair of Tangent 400s. Anyone know anything about these? There is also a pair of Heresy's for $750.

I love the old school wide speakers (Cornwall's would be my first choice) but my room isn't wide enough and the prices are steep. I was thinking more of the modern towers. I listen to a wide range of music. Everything from jazz to classic country but I would say that 80% of the music that I listen to is late 60's to mid 80's classic rock. I want a great sounding speaker that has decent bass. I don't think that there is one specific sound that I am targeting. I am currently listening to my 90 db speakers at about 45% of max volume. I think that anything over 50-60% would be too loud in my room.
