  1. I was 12 when I bought this album. It was the first ever classical album I bought in my life. I had learned about the 1812 Ouverture in the first year of highschool, and I was so impressed by it that I took the bus to the 'big city' to buy the record. Later, I became equally impressed, or even more, by the B-side: Serenade for String Orchestra. This was in the early 1980s, when they would put 'DIGITAL' on the sleeve to sell more albums, and when record shops still put stickers in silver or gold on the records they sold, with their address and telephone number... Klup, Bilbo, Musicmania: all the record shops I frequented are all long gone by now...
  2. I haven't seen those Belgian Franks in a very long time. 5 Frank equals 0.125 euro. 1 French Franc was worth 6 Belgian Frank's. 1 Dutch Gulden was 20 Belgian Franks. And these were just our neighboring countries.... Complicated!
  3. It's Eno shaking his moneymaker, I guess. No added value to the music quality. Mirror ball 2.0
  4. Sure thing, a song with John Lee Hooker samples, is a problematic track on St Germain's Tourist. It has unintended cracks all through the track, reported by many others. A pressing error? My Pro-Ject TT can't play the track, nor can my Onkyo. So what about the linear tracking SL DL1? It plays the 'faulty' track without issues. Linear tracking rules!
  5. Who needs a prism anyhow... If a Lithium battery cr2032 works like a charm... 😉😉😉😉😜
  6. Yeah, I already gave it a careful shake - after I locked the tonearm - to no avail. My theory is that someone pushed it deeper into the cavity where it got stuck, or someone took it out to use it in a more valuable technics tt with the same prism...
  7. https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/brian-eno-incredible-neon-colour-changing-turntable/ I like it. Works best with transparent vinyl. Will be the next fad, I guess. Only 50 are being made. Price on request only... Until the Chinaman starts copying.
  8. Listening to 'The Great Ray Charles' on repeat while grading exams!
  9. The obligatory audiophile baptism of newly acquired gear: Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms, 'So far away' (YT may cut off sound for copyright reasons, but who cares) Gear : NEW: Technics SL DL1 (1981) iFi Zen Phono Leben Hifi CS300 (2007) Klipsch Heresy (1972) Edit: I noticed the pitch control was slightly off, so I corrected that already.
  10. I'm considering changing my name into TragicLinearTangentialMeloManiac. Good idea?
  11. Yes, thank you! I found it for free on another website. I must say it is a very complex machine! I have removed the platter and can see the the empty space where the strobe's viewer prism should be (now it is an empty space). I am currently searching ebay for "technics sl-dl1 strobe prism" but can't find an exact match...
  12. I think I like the SL-DL1 better, hard to describe why, what comes to mind is that it has a 'fuller' sound. In the mean while, I think I know why I got it so cheap: although the pitch control works, the strobe light does not. I think a mirror has simply disappeared. Can't imagine how this is possible, without taking it apart... An I can't imagine why someone would do this. Or am I missing something here? See picture.
  13. Look what I bought today. Not top of the line, but it plays sweet melodies! Technics SL-DL1, a 1981 direct drive, linear tracking turntable!
  14. If I were to put them birds on my CS300 tube amp like that, they'd be laying boiled eggs!!!!
  15. The Sinatra Chrismas Album https://www.discogs.com/release/3884765-Frank-Sinatra-The-Sinatra-Christmas-Album Only when I took the picture, I noticed this is a mono record. Sounds nice! It was recorded in 1957, but my records is a re-issue from 1983.
  16. New tubes have arrived for my Leben CS300 integrated: military grade Sovtek EL84M and 12ax7lps (long plates). Bought them as 'backup' but they sound so nice with vinyl records!
  17. Selling mine is not an option because it has a lot of emotional value: this is the TT my parents for my sister and me when we were teenagers. Playing it brings back a lot of good (and not so good) memories.
  18. A couple of weeks ago, I posted a message here about my faulty needle for my 40 year old Onkyo CP1000A turntable: all of a sudden it sounded terrible, and then it started skating to the middle of the record instantly. I couldn't see anything wrong with it, not even with a loupe, and some here suggested the TT needed callibrating, which I did, but the problem persisted. So this week, a replacement needle arrived and all is well now. According to the seller (a large Dutch specialist company), the replacement needle I bought in 2017 to replace the original (from the 1980s) should last 400-600 hours, but I guess I used it for maybe 40 hours (or less), from 2017 till now, because this is my secundary system in my den upstairs. So I guess I was unlucky... I also considered upgrading to a more modern needle, eg Ortofon OM10 or M2 Red, but I didn't because I'm not sure if it would work well with this TT. Also, this TT is in mint condition, but what is it value? 50 euro? Does it make sense to put a more expensive needle on it then?
  19. I guess this won't make sense to the rest of the world, but Dalida stole the heart of many of the Europeans... With Gigi L'Amoroso as the emotional climax.
  20. Is there a Brussels in USA? Brussels is a town in Door County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,136 at the 2010 census. :-)))) Brussels is also the capital of Belgium, and this is a song about the famous street in Brussels with many restaurants anc cafés (pubs). It is sung in the Brussels dialect, a peculiar Dutch dialect (not French!). Brussels comes from 'Broeksele', which simply means 'marshland'.
  21. My native language is Dutch and I teach Dutch and English in a Belgian highschool for 16-18 year old students. (I have a master degree in Literary Theory and Comparative Literary Study, so we talk a lot about novels, movies and songs in my lessons. I recently taught my students about Johnny Cash in 1969 with the song San Quentin!) My wife studied languages too: she works in a law firm but she is officially a translator (Dutch/French/German/English). She's also a gifted multi-instrumentalist (piano, cello, oboe and flute).
  22. I bought 'In Trance' as a teenager back in the 1980s. My favorite songs are 'In Trance' and 'Dark Lady'. It helped me survive a difficult domestic situation (bipolar mom) and inspired me to start writing short stories, which ultimately lead to my profession as a language teacher and author...
  23. Here in the west of Belgium, it's raining hard, with floods (again). I decided to play Rain, Rain, Rain, the very first single my parents had in the house (the got it free when they bought their turntable (used)).
  24. If you are using a gel to clean your stylus... DON'T! https://www.analogplanet.com/content/time-put-away-onzow-zerodust One should clean styli mechanically (brush), and records with demineralized water. https://www.ortofon.com/hifi/products/hifi-cartridges/mc-a95/stylus-care/ H
