I hope you are using your auditory cortex as well. It's a tricky little devil.
Definitely.

I found Al's design philosophy regarding the AA crossover, as well as a schematic on his website for his CSW or universal design. The CSW-450, for a little more cash, has a woofer filter at 450 Hz, similar to the AL5. I am making a meager/fun attempt at imitating the AL5. The CSW was wonderful with my Heresy I pair, especially with SMAHL tweeters. I'm expecting more of the same from the CSW-450s for my La Scalas.

I slightly modify existing designs since I’m using different parts.
I used to be Al’s licensed builder for that design. When he wanted me to make it using cheap as dirt parts, I quit. Still want to know what I think about it?
Yes. Inquiring minds want to know.

What is “your crossover “?
Deang designs crossovers for the La Scala et al.

That's not what I meant, and as Soundbound pointed out, you are doing goofy audiophile stuff with no way of validating what you are hearing. It's okay, we've all been there -- no judgment.
Validating my findings is unimportant in this exercise. Audio quality is the only measurement I'm using. Ears.
Speaking of audio quality, I know you've listened to the ALK CSW-450. What is the sonic difference between the CSW-450 and your crossover, according to your audio standards/ears?

You're not going to get there with wire and connector changeouts.
Never thought I would. I'm waiting on a high quality crossover. I also have my new tweeters and mid drivers waiting in the wings. Didn't think the wires and connectors would be an issue, but they were. Fixed it.

I'm used to hearing live drums, guitars, vocalists, etc. The goal is to get my kit to sound like band practice. Composing music is goofy too.

Lol. Wut? Well, don’t use 10AWG wire then.
I was thinking the same. What I'll do is get 10AWG copper connectors. Wrapping 10AWG around those little screws on the crossover isn't my best option.

Congratulations on your first La Scalas. Appreciate you sharing your findings. A recap of some so far are:
10AWG pure copper audio wire makes the K-77 sound better.
Silent Feet, aka "hockey pucks between carpet and La Scalas makes them sound better.
The K55V with new diaphragms and K77 tweeters sound better than the new A-55-G/2 drivers and SMAHL tweeters.
The most dramatic upgrades of these are 10 AWG pure copper speaker and terminal wire and an audiophile AC power cord.
You can hear the difference between 10AWG and 8AWG in crossovers.
Old caps rock, but not with home made spade connectors.
Wyvern banana plug adapters sound better, but only for a day.
Copper spade input connectors makes speakers sound better even when all the other connectors in the crossovers aren’t copper.
Let us know about your bare wire findings too.
Excellent editorial skills.

Still there. I'm wondering if this listing is real.
-
Good to know. Bare wire will be my next experiment.

These connectors gave an immediate upgrade to the sound. Much better than my home made adapters. Maybe I'll put copper connectors on all of my crossover terminals.

Not to mention the difference between the two crossovers
How are they different sonically?

I did this for my Heresys, Chorus IIs, and now my La Scalas. Knocks the boxy/stuffy/honking mid horn sound right out. It also improves the bass very politely.

Thanks for the suggestions. All good ideas.
I'm getting these connectors, as they look just like what I was about to build. At $60, they definitely fit my time/money preferences.

I installed these little banana plug adapters for the speaker inputs. You may see a lot of these on Amazon at varying prices, but they are not all made alike, nor do they sound alike. This is the Wyvern brand, and they sound great.
I'm on my second audiophile speaker cable set. The second one is definitely better, and these little adapters let them sing nicely.
So... the Wyvern adapters started sounding just like the other cheapos after one day. I'm back to home made banana to fork adapters with full fidelity restored... they just look home made.

You are treading choppy water when you mention in this forum that one cable sounds better than another…😬

The market is getting soft. These have been available for three weeks at this price.

These old caps were sounding really good with my 10awg wire and horn damping updates. My new cables and caps seem to need more burn in time, but the sonic difference makes it obvious that these old caps rock.
Edit: My home made spade connectors were the culprit. They stole the highs, details and presence. The proverbial 'blanket over the speakers'. Connectors really do make a difference.

I used Kilmat on my Heresy I pair, and that simple mod made the bass and mids far more distinct and clear. The upper mids had substantially more clarity. Similar results with my Chorus IIs and '80s La Scalas.
-
Mission accomplished. I installed the JEM Audio caps, and my La Scalas are now restored to factory stock, minus the big fat 10awg wire I've used throughout. The new caps definitely upped the volume and sensitivity of the speakers.
I also bought a pair of twisted copper 8AWG cables from an ebay little home factory operation. Only $55. They are very impressive! More music is coming out of these cables.
I'm really liking the sound, but I have more experimenting to do with Dave A's tweeters, the A55Gs, and ALK crossovers, whenever they get here. I'll let the updated AA crossovers and new cables burn in a few more days before the experimentation resumes.

Thanks for the input. I assumed ALK's crossovers are more in line with modern Klipsch crossovers, and Dean G's crossovers are more in line with the originals on steroids. I really should get Dean G's crossover and compare it to my audio memory of the ALKs in my Heresy pair, or just get both.
