  1. Hello, I am in the beginning process of building(Planning) my own KLF's Clones using 4 Ciare HW321 Woofers with Crites 600 Horns 55 mid driver and CT120 Tweeters. It has only been 2 years since I acquired everything😆 I am finally Itching to buy Sheets of MDF, Cabinets will be about 3cu.ft. larger that OEM cabinets

I am intrigued what fellow KLF owners have to power your KLF's. Myself, I am looking into a Set of Bob Latino's Dynaco Tube amps or some vintage Sansui eye candy. As of right now, I only have a 1974 Pioneer SX-1010 receiver at 110w x2 @8ohm. I also heard that certain amps favor certain speaker, perhaps you have experimented with different types. Cheers :emotion-22:

I have two pairs of 30's and over the years I experimented with I think most, if not all of the cheap tweaks that were easily reversible and found zero benefit from any of them. Mortite/Rope caulk on the back of the horns, lining a portion of the inside of the cabinet with acoustical felt, placing weight on top of the speaker for better bass response, adjusting different port lengths etc. etc.

The biggest problem with mine (and many others) was the loose baffles on the cabinet and the crossovers taking a dump at approximately 17 years old. If your crossovers are working properly and your cabs are solid, that will solve most of your problems right there and you can be done with it.

I went a few steps further and upgraded the tweeters/horn lenses and midrange drivers. Because I had two pairs I was able to compare side by side and my preference definitely favored the upgraded components. Without a doubt.

I also took a chance on on some Italian 12" woofers instead of the K-31's and K-31E. Reason is because the original woofers are very difficult and almost impossible to find.....and also to mention their build quality isn't the greatest to put it lightly.

I bought my first pair of 30's used about 11 years ago for $500 bucks. I've put about $1400.00 into them (under 2K total) and I was shocked how similar they sound to the new Cornwall IV's ($6000.00 new) I demoed about 10 months ago. Smoothness and lack of forward midrange come to mind as well as a richer sounding bass vs that boxie, cheap cabinet sounding bass I remember previously hearing.

If you do nothing else, at the minimum put Crites crossovers in there.....seal the cabs and put in some front to back bracing (a minimal amount). If these speakers are at least functioning properly, they're impressive. I've heard 30's sound bad many more times than I've heard them sound good because they're usually screwed up one way or another. Also, make sure the mid range drivers are not hooked up out of phase. Another common issue.

    Good Luck!

When you upgraded your KLF30's did you notice the ohms for the Ciare HW321? I just received my new CIARE HW321 and checked with the OHM meter and it reads 5.7 even though they are listed at 8Ohm drivers. So depending how I wire them up I will either get a final Ohm load of 3 or 11. Not sure how this will effect everything.

  3. So I have been in contact with the Crites, very helpful folks by the way! I basically am sticking with the CIARA Woofers but will be using the C-600 Cast Alum. Horns with M-55G Mids, and their CT120 Tweeter with horns and crossovers of course. They all-ready warned me that they can't guarantee anything since they are unfamiliar with the specs of my woofers but we shall see. 🤞 BTW The C-600 Horns and Mids are the same as Cornwall's

Dont forget terminal connectors and port tubes

Yes, I' will have to do some math, get dimensions and start on the cabinets. As soon as i do, I will probably start a build thread. Does anyone know the material thickness of the OEM Boxes being used? I most likely will use 3/4" MDF but will have to compensate if the OEM thickness is 5/8 or 1/2"

No they are both tweeters 2 options available the first pic is the de-10 and the second, which I recommend, is the de-120 with the smaller but more powerful neodymium magnet.

Perfect, It now makes sense. I want to make sure I can get all the hardware first before I pull the trigger on everything. Home Depot has Birch Ply with my name on it

Here's an eBay link to Dave's MAHL again probably cheaper to contact him through the forum here and I'd opt for the de-120 drivers which he offers:

I see two different drivers in his pictures, are these suppose to cover the Mid and High or are these just an example of what he offers.

I guess the single horn here in the garage sale sold-- ZXPC is a seller on eBay with great quality products here is a similar horn but a bit larger would not fit in a stock KLF cabinet but since you are building custom might be able to make it work?

Thank you for the Link, They are Purdy, I can all-ready Visualize Copper Fasteners in them 😉

There is a single KLF-30 mid horn in the garage sale section here and I have another single I'd be willing to let go, A55-g mid drivers are readily available through Crites as are his crossovers. Tweeter horns are readily available as well you have @Dave A MAHL drop in's as an easy option and the Ciare woofers are available and sold on the US speaker website.

Thank you, i just want to stress that the Horns dosen't have to be an exact fit worse case scenario, since it is being build from scratch and will not have any fitment problems. I have reached out to Bob Crites last week and I'm still waiting for a response. That website is a bit hard to figure out if you don't know what you are looking for.

  9. First, I love the Challenge, I have been taken on lots of Carpentry projects that I never have done before because how else will I learn. I actually found a set in Detroit Michigan for sale for $1000 but it is a 10H drive from North Carolina. Then I might be forced to upgrade them and if not now then for sure in the future so then why not buy all the better stuff now and build a cabinet for them? Like I said, I love the challenge and I'm willing to fail doing so.

As far as the Horns, I think they don't have to be exact OEM, they can be Universal ones since I'm building a brand new cabinet from scratch .I'm more worried about the proper drivers to be within a certain Thiele parameters. And if I fail at all of this, you can tell me, i told you so. 😁

  10. First, thank you for your reply. I think the upgraded ones would be best also to make it "Future Proof" I don't want to chase down 20year old OEM stuff because eventually it will wear out eventually. And since I am starting with 4x8 sheets of Birch Plywood, I don't have to be constrained to exact OEM horn or driver fitment issues, since I will be the one cutting the holes. 😃

  11. Hello, I am in pursuit in owning a great set of speakers like the K30's I almost made a deal tonight but it required me to drive 10h one way and it all fell through of a difference of $100.

I am a motivated buyer and I'm never shy in doing whatever it takes to get it done. So I just completed a major renovation to my house and have to build Kitchen Cabinets next so I  decided, hey, why not build my own K30's from scratch since everyone is upgrading theirs and I don't want to purchase some old ones to only having to upgrade them later.

So I know I will need:

    2ea. Bob Crites Crossovers.

    4ea. CIARE HW321 12" woofers.

    Tweeters +Horns???

    Mid's + Horn???

If anyone can fill in the blank, I will greatly appreciate it!!!
