  1. Talking with Roy Delgado about the CF 4's, was almost like talking to a proud Father, about their Son. He told me that not only do the CF 4 series 1 have more efficiency than the CF 3's, but he was also happier with the way the crossover came out. However, please be careful, because Trey Cannon told me years ago that Klipsch did not have any replacement woofers for the CF 3's. That may mean they are out of CF 4 woofers as well ?
  2. These crossovers are AL 3's I have already spotted a Capacitor in these crossovers that is gonna get replaced. It is a fairly large yellow Mylar. I have had real good results with ERSE Poly Caps, after they break in. But first, I plan to listen to these La Scala's, the way they are I have to make up some wires today for them, and move my other speakers out of their way. The Academy Center Channel Speaker that came with these La Scala's is hooked up. I very much like the way it sounds ! However, it could probably benefit from some new caps My 37 year old Son stopped by this morning, and saw the La Scala's. He is very much an Audiophile, and just bought B&W 702 speakers. He really liked the way my Black La Scala's look, called them "Retro Looking". His new B&W 702 speakers sound very nice, and are quite the departure from the normal B&W Sound They are warm, rich, and image all over the place. However, what they are not is Efficient My Son is an avid movie watcher, with a pair of Outlaw Audio subwoofers. He is fixing to learn that there is no substitute for efficiency.
  3. LOL, I too had CF 3's, and had some questions about them, so I called Klipsch, and because someone in customer service was not there, I was put right through to Mr Roy Delgado himself, the designer of the Epic CF Series. Roy and I figured out that I had CF 3 version 2's, and then Roy went on a very nice rant of how they ruined his speaker, by turning it into a boom box. The CF series was not selling very well in showrooms, so marketing took it upon themselves to raise the vent tuning, and by doing so, ruined Roy's wonderful design. All that marketing needed to do was educate their dealers, to be sure that prospective buyers SAT DOWN to listen to them. I restored my CF 3's series 2's to CF 3 series 1's by using the original port length. I called Roy Delgado back to thank him, and he told me my goal should be a set of CF 4 Series 1's (3 db more efficiency) I finally found a pair of the CF 4 series 1's, and used them for several years with an older pioneer receiver that had the awesome feature of several tone control memories!!!!!!!!!! Memory 1 was bass up 1 - treble up 1 Memory 2 Bass up 2 - Treble up 2 I had about 30 combinations of tone control settings I could engage at will, by remote control. I was listening to Black Sabbath Paranoid on the CF 4 series 1's one day, with memory 2 of the tone controls engaged. Suddenly, I saw a flashlight shining through my window, so I went to the front door. I was the Police, asking me to "tell the band to turn it down"
  4. I have heard some folks on forums having luck with some Digital amps to power K Horns and other super efficient speakers. You realize that Onkyo bought Pioneer, right ? Some say it was to get their digital D3 amplifier, and/or eliminate a competitor. The newest top of the line Onkyo's have the Pioneer D3 digital amp in them. My old Onkyo TX NR 809 sounded amazing, and it has pre outs. I have several amplifiers here, and guess what ? The internal Onkyo amp was as good, or better, then every amp I own!
  5. OK, here are some more Pics, the LaScala's are in the house. The crossovers are type AL 3's for sure
  6. I have a spool of 14 gage electric fence wire I can make a pair of wires from. I kind of like to use it as speaker wire, because it comes already twisted. Not as tight a braid/twist as Kimber 8TC, but enough twist to get some RF Rejection, so when I am talking on my Ham Radio, I don't come blasting over the Stereo.
  7. Yea, my neighbor is gonna come help me, when he gets done eating! I forgot, the LaScala's have those funky wire connections, so much for my banana plug speaker cable.
  8. I am pretty sure these are the AL 3 crossovers, but they are on their backs in my truck, at this moment. You are very fortunate to have found a 3rd LaScala for a center! I will have to make do with this Academy. I have an ONKY0 TX NR 809 up at Onkyo being repaired, I currently have a Pioneer Elite with the non digital amps hooked up, and my Son is giving me his Pioneer Elite receiver, with the D3 digital amps, that sounded so good on some very efficient speakers I recently sold. He had the Anthem receiver, what a disappointment. He sent it back to Crutchfield, and ordered that brand new Marantz. LOL, I will get his old Pioneer, when the new Marantz arrives.
  9. I took a few pics to make Youthman "Happy" Here is the Academy Center And here are the LaScala's "riding Redneck style" in the back of my Pick Up, and yes, that is a tower and Ham Radio Antenna in the background
  10. Those little 3.2's are now "orphans" They were the rear surrounds for the La Scala's and Academy I just bought earlier today. He changed the ad
  11. Here is the advertisement https://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/ele/d/klipsch-speakers/6402905199.html LOL, all he has left is the Klipsch 3.2's I bought his LaScala's and Academy I paid what some may consider "a lot of money", but a pair of Black La Scala's and Academy Center in Black do not come along everyday here in the Tampa Florida area.
  12. Not anymore, unfortunately Simply Speakers over in St Petersburg Florida screwed them up, big time. They LIED to me, said they had an original EV Recone kit for my woofers, so I told them to recone them. They RUINED my babies, the recone changed my crossover point, and when I complained they said to simply use my equalizer.
  13. I just bought a pair of Black La Scala's and a Black Academy! The La Scala's are still in the truck, waiting on my neighbor to help me get them inside. I brought the Klipsch Academy inside, and it is hooked up. Very Nice ! I have never owned La Scala's before, but have owned several pairs of Khorns, Cornwall's, Forte's, and CF 3 and CF 4's. These LaScala's have the AL 3 crossovers, I think.
  14. Gary, if it is on the Internet, it "must be true" LOL Seriously, it is for real, here is some more info on them http://www.itishifi.com/2012/08/klipsch-tscm.html I need to stop looking at those speakers. I have the money to buy them, but it will wipe me out. I think he deliberately placed McIntosh in his ad, so in case anyone searching for McIntosh will find his speakers. The reasoning being, if someone can afford McIntosh, they can afford his speakers. 108 db efficient Gary, holy sheet !
  15. You are absolutely correct, not many speakers will beat a properly set up and fed pair of Klipschorns. But, these Klipsch Speakers will. I wish I could afford these http://www.ebay.com/itm/KLIPSCH-TSCM-PRO-KLIPSCHORN-SPEAKERS-24-000-00-NEW-/322798205911?hash=item4b2845bbd7:g:sjYAAOSw8vZXMoDQ
  16. My Grandfather had a pair of Klipschorns in his basement in Detroit, driven by all tubes. LOL, I remember me and Grandpa walking in snowstorms, so he could use the tube tester, at a drug store. He had an old round screen color TV made by Admiral. People faces would sometimes be part green, and part purple. He had the coil called a degaussing coil he ran over the picture tube. I remember Grandpa in desperation trying different brands of tubes in his old color TV, to make it watchable.
  17. I agree, there is no substitute for efficiency. These Cerwin Vega V 35D Speakers I am currently playing with have obvious colorations, and are all over the place, as far as accuracy goes. However, they are 103 db efficient!
  18. I just lost a 10 paragraph reply A Canadian Company called Anthem makes a room correction system, said to be very good. I used to own a Sherwood Receiver, with the Trinnov System, and never used it It was a wonderful, warm sounding receiver, but it had HDMI problems, so I sold it
  19. I have owned several pairs of Klipschorns, but never measured them. Klipsch maybe could do what you are suggesting with a DSP Crossover based version of the Klipschorn.
  20. I just sent a message on Facebook to Sean Olive, asking if the Harman and NRC Curve are the same. I know he has a link to the curve, and so do I, somewhere in a zillion emails I never met John Curl, but he was close to Brian Cheyney ex of VMPS, who is dead. So is Jim Bongiornio, remember him ? I met PWK at the Detroit Audio Show, at Cobo Hall. I was 14, so it was 1968 or 1969 He wore a button that said "BULLSHIT"
  21. Yes, John Curl was a Levinson Designer, responsible for many vintage Levinson products. He came before Tom Colangelo. After he left Levinson, he designed SOME Parasound stuff, and also made a preamp called a Blowtorch. Mark Levinson told me to be sure I took my Klipschorn tweeters out of the cabinet, and turn them vertical. I never did, but I have heard vertical Cornwalls compared to standard Cornwalls, and the vertically oriented tweeters imaged better. As far as the NRC Curve, it was developed at the NRC in Canada as a set of measurements that most listeners preferred. It is not a smile curve, and it is also not flat. NAD does include, however, their own proprietary response curve, to provide what they feel is the ideal in-room response, in addition to MultEQ XT’s standard target curve. NAD’s curve is based on research in room equalization and listener preferences done in the 1980s at the National Research Council of Canada, where the SoundStage! Network has review samples of loudspeakers measured. The NAD curve was developed by Paul Barton, chief designer of NAD’s sister company PSB Speakers, who was involved in the research at the NRC.
  22. Gary, speaking of curves, is the Harmon Curve the same as the NRC Curve ? The reason I ask is an audio buddy has the NAD Receiver, that has a version of Audyssey made for them by this Paul Barton guy from Canada, that is supposed to emulate the NRC Curve. Paul Barton is the guy behind the PSB Speakers. I had a Pioneer Elite Receiver with Pioneer's version of Audyssey, but I got rid of it before I compared it's effects to Audyssey. I am using an ONKYO NR 809 receiver https://www.onkyousa.com/Products/model.php?m=TX-NR809&class=Receiver Mark Levinson said to turn the Klipschorn Tweeters vertical, said it makes them image better, BTW
  23. Back in 1983, I had lunch with my friends who owned a high end stereo store in Seattle. Mark Levinson had come to town, and I sat next to him, at the Space Needle Restaurant. I asked Mark, "what is the ultimate speaker" To my utter shock and amazement he said "Klipschorns" ! He did say the tweeters needed to be turned vertically, and they needed to be correctly equalized, with his Chello Audio Pallett equalizer http://www.celloseattle.com/ctdocs/prodserve/peripherals/audiopalette.htm Well, when I found out how much an Audio Pallet Equalizer cost, I gave up that idea! Now that I have used Audyssey, I wish I still had my KHorns! Anyone ever try Audyssey on Klipschorns ? I play with different speakers. Right now, I have a totally re capped pair of Cerwin Vega V 35D 3 way speakers I am messing with. Stock, these are surprisingly musical, although admittedly ugly speakers. I replaced all the 20 year old Mylar caps with ERSE Poly Caps. Bob Crites was correct, old Mylar Caps can measure good, but have high ESR. The new caps have broken in, and guess what ? Capacitor break in is real. The speakers sound a lot better with the new Poly Caps. A very different sound then Cornwalls or Forte's or CF 4's These have a 2 position switch in the rear, one for vocals, one for playback. Even in the vocal position, they are much more mellow then most Klipsch speakers. LOL, no tube amp is required for these Still, they were a bit crude sounding in different ways, depending on the position of the rear switch. Very Musical, but still very colored, very evident when watching TV/Movies So, I ran Audyssey on them, and to say that it transformed these speakers is an understatement. The musicality of these remain after Audyssey. After all, these have an 18 inch woofer with a 3 inch motor, and are 103 db efficient. But all the vocal coloration is gone. Well, almost .... It is now good enough on Movies and TV that I can enjoy them. They say there is even better room correction programs out there, especially the one from Anthem. Audyssey is a royal PITA because if you have surround speakers hooked up, it tries to set those up too, and correct them LOL, Audyssey turned the level of these 2 front speakers down 12 db, to match my 90 db center and surround speakers level. I would be curious to hear about other members experience with room correction schemes
